For the record, I personally hate preseason polls and that they directly effect play off contention. Want to keep polls, release the first ones the first week in Oct. Sure, some of the teams that feast upon sisters of the blind early will get too much love but a lot more shit teams will also be exposed.

BetMGM has them at the 11th best odds to win the CFP, and 4th best odds to win the B10, so its pretty close.

They’ll end the season unranked

Meh..

So Penn State beat a borderline top 25 Minnesota team by 1 and we beat a bordeline top 50 Vandy team by 3 but "meh"?  I mean, let's be a little consistent here.  I didn't say PSU should be ranked ahead of us, but there is some argument there.

Some of you guys could fuck up a wet dream. No one wants to hear bitching about a preseason poll. Looking at that shit and getting excited about it and analyzing it and discussing it with other board denizens is the whole fucking point of a board like this. You're probably the same rubes who show up to bitch about all of those damned meaningless bowls, by golly!

Arguing about rankings is the most college football-y thing there is

We have a week to argue about it until the AP poll next Monday

Sigh, truth.

Did you miss the part where they went into OT with a shitty, over ranked Minnesota, struggled against a Reilly coached team and struggled against Bowling Green?

God damn right. Don't express or discuss any opinions about the primary subject that isn't in full support of it. This thread is for arguments about the opinions of coaches on where teams are ranked and any other discussion is verboten. Glad to see someone knows how it works here on Surly.

Did you miss the part where we struggled against Vandy?  This is the absolute worst part of preseason in college football, the blinders so many fans are born with.  Good luck with that.

I am the on with the blinders? Dude, struggling with a hurt QB against Vanderbilt on the road is NOT equal to struggling to Bowling Green at home, a Reilly coached USC AND Minnesota.

I'd buy a equal for 8-5 Minnesota to 7-6 Vanderbilt that leaves PSU holding 2 bags one of which is Bowling Green and a super shitty USC. Since you seem math and logic challenged struggling in 3 games against mediocre to shitty opponents is MORE than struggling in one game against a mediocre opponent. Math is so hard.

But hey, you do you and think whatever you want about Pedo States potential this year.

The point is that they were roughly our equal last year, are returning more starters, one of which is their QB.  It's stupid to completely discount that.  But sure, bring your "math and logic" LMAO.

We didn’t struggle with vandy. The refs kept them in it just enough to get a garbage touchdown at the buzzer to pull within 3. Called a pick 6 back on a bad call against us. Miracle td by pavia. And we played our c game.

To be clear, Minnesota wasn’t a bad team last year. Vanderbilt wasn’t a bad team last year either. They both might be pretty good this year. Why are they being implied here as bad teams? Minnesota might win 9 or 10 games this season given a forgiving schedule.

I wasn’t arguing penn st. vs whoever.  I think that was someone else. I was responding to jimmyjazz saying us struggling against vandy. I don’t think it was a struggle for us regardless of the score. And yes vandy wasn’t bad at all.

Broughton decided to decapitate Pavia for no reason at all to negate that pick-six. It was entirely self-inflicted on our part.

Pavia jumped into him. They didn’t even hit helmets. It was big guy lil guy play that looked bad so of course they throw a flag. We played our c game and won on the road. I was more pissed off with that call because it forced us to play more snaps with a chance for injuries when the game was already in hand.

Underrated:

-Iowa State

-Missouri (their schedule virtually guarantees a 9-3 floor if Pribula is just decent)

-Louisville (see Mizzou)

-Nebraska

-Minnesota

-Baylor

-Washington

-Georgia Tech

I'm Missouri on any relatively new head coach at a blue blood. Especially replacing the GOAT. I'm gonna need to see a complete season from Alabama before I buy the DeBoer hype. You can't lost to Vandy and the worst OU team in a quarter century and be a top-10 team the next year. I don't care how many 5-stars they have.

You, sir, are underrated.

I hate watching James Franklin teams in big games. I've got a buddy who is a huge Penn State fan, so while my inclination is to root against them every game, for his sake I'd watch with a fan-by-proxy interest. Their offensive coordinator is shit on a stick. I hate his play calling. I hate how quickly he abandons a dominant run game. I hate their neanderthal passing offense. They do a terrible job building off their play calls. I know they're high on Khalil Dinkins, but man I loved to watch Tyler Warren. That guys seems really hard to replace. I'm not sold on Allar, although in his defense it may be the OC.

Franklin coaches scared, IMO, and his team takes on the same personality trait. It's like an even worse version of Mack Brown.

They start the season with four home games, including Nevada, FIU, and Villanova before having to put their big boy pants on for the rematch with Oregon in their famed White Out game. For all I know Dan Lanning is going to have extras dressed up in Ku Klux Klan outfits at Oregon practices in some kind of effort to paint this as good versus evil. Oregon isn't exactly running a gauntlet, but Montana State, Oklahoma State, Northwestern (in Evanston) and Oregon State is a mite more challenging than the cream puffs PSU has slated.

And then Frankin's manhood is challenged with that game in Columbus November 1. The whole Penn State narrative is that they can't beat Michigan or Ohio State. I assume they can make it to the playoff even losing to both Oregon and OSU if they win the rest of their games, but I don't know how they'd have the confidence to win against an elite team if that were to be the case.

People can talk about how Texas hasn't won anything all they want, but road wins against Alabama two years ago, Michigan last year, and then beating teams that some of the best programs in the SEC managed to lose to (Alabama to Vanderbilt/OU, Ole Miss to Kentucky/Florida), plus dominating A&M and their little wanna be jihad, says that Texas can get it done in tough environments.

I'll say this. I'd love to match up against Penn State in the playoffs, regardless of the round.
