For the record, I personally hate preseason polls and that they directly effect play off contention. Want to keep polls, release the first ones the first week in Oct. Sure, some of the teams that feast upon sisters of the blind early will get too much love but a lot more shit teams will also be exposed.

BetMGM has them at the 11th best odds to win the CFP, and 4th best odds to win the B10, so its pretty close.

They’ll end the season unranked

Meh..

So Penn State beat a borderline top 25 Minnesota team by 1 and we beat a bordeline top 50 Vandy team by 3 but "meh"?  I mean, let's be a little consistent here.  I didn't say PSU should be ranked ahead of us, but there is some argument there.

Some of you guys could fuck up a wet dream. No one wants to hear bitching about a preseason poll. Looking at that shit and getting excited about it and analyzing it and discussing it with other board denizens is the whole fucking point of a board like this. You're probably the same rubes who show up to bitch about all of those damned meaningless bowls, by golly!

Did you miss the part where they went into OT with a shitty, over ranked Minnesota, struggled against a Reilly coached team and struggled against Bowling Green?

God damn right. Don't express or discuss any opinions about the primary subject that isn't in full support of it. This thread is for arguments about the opinions of coaches on where teams are ranked and any other discussion is verboten. Glad to see someone knows how it works here on Surly.

Did you miss the part where we struggled against Vandy?  This is the absolute worst part of preseason in college football, the blinders so many fans are born with.  Good luck with that.

I am the on with the blinders? Dude, struggling with a hurt QB against Vanderbilt on the road is NOT equal to struggling to Bowling Green at home, a Reilly coached USC AND Minnesota.

I'd buy a equal for 8-5 Minnesota to 7-6 Vanderbilt that leaves PSU holding 2 bags one of which is Bowling Green and a super shitty USC. Since you seem math and logic challenged struggling in 3 games against mediocre to shitty opponents is MORE than struggling in one game against a mediocre opponent. Math is so hard.

But hey, you do you and think whatever you want about Pedo States potential this year.

The point is that they were roughly our equal last year, are returning more starters, one of which is their QB.  It's stupid to completely discount that.  But sure, bring your "math and logic" LMAO.

We didn’t struggle with vandy. The refs kept them in it just enough to get a garbage touchdown at the buzzer to pull within 3. Called a pick 6 back on a bad call against us. Miracle td by pavia. And we played our c game.

To be clear, Minnesota wasn’t a bad team last year. Vanderbilt wasn’t a bad team last year either. They both might be pretty good this year. Why are they being implied here as bad teams? Minnesota might win 9 or 10 games this season given a forgiving schedule.

I wasn’t arguing penn st. vs whoever.  I think that was someone else. I was responding to jimmyjazz saying us struggling against vandy. I don’t think it was a struggle for us regardless of the score. And yes vandy wasn’t bad at all.

Broughton decided to decapitate Pavia for no reason at all to negate that pick-six. It was entirely self-inflicted on our part.

Pavia jumped into him. They didn’t even hit helmets. It was big guy lil guy play that looked bad so of course they throw a flag. We played our c game and won on the road. I was more pissed off with that call because it forced us to play more snaps with a chance for injuries when the game was already in hand.

You, sir, are underrated.

I hate watching James Franklin teams in big games. I've got a buddy who is a huge Penn State fan, so while my inclination is to root against them every game, for his sake I'd watch with a fan-by-proxy interest. Their offensive coordinator is shit on a stick. I hate his play calling. I hate how quickly he abandons a dominant run game. I hate their neanderthal passing offense. They do a terrible job building off their play calls. I know they're high on Khalil Dinkins, but man I loved to watch Tyler Warren. That guys seems really hard to replace. I'm not sold on Allar, although in his defense it may be the OC.

Franklin coaches scared, IMO, and his team takes on the same personality trait. It's like an even worse version of Mack Brown.

They start the season with four home games, including Nevada, FIU, and Villanova before having to put their big boy pants on for the rematch with Oregon in their famed White Out game. For all I know Dan Lanning is going to have extras dressed up in Ku Klux Klan outfits at Oregon practices in some kind of effort to paint this as good versus evil. Oregon isn't exactly running a gauntlet, but Montana State, Oklahoma State, Northwestern (in Evanston) and Oregon State is a mite more challenging than the cream puffs PSU has slated.

And then Frankin's manhood is challenged with that game in Columbus November 1. The whole Penn State narrative is that they can't beat Michigan or Ohio State. I assume they can make it to the playoff even losing to both Oregon and OSU if they win the rest of their games, but I don't know how they'd have the confidence to win against an elite team if that were to be the case.

People can talk about how Texas hasn't won anything all they want, but road wins against Alabama two years ago, Michigan last year, and then beating teams that some of the best programs in the SEC managed to lose to (Alabama to Vanderbilt/OU, Ole Miss to Kentucky/Florida), plus dominating A&M and their little wanna be jihad, says that Texas can get it done in tough environments.

I'll say this. I'd love to match up against Penn State in the playoffs, regardless of the round.

Minnesota lost to UNC, Iowa, Michigan, Rutgers and PSU the last of which was the only team they lost to that was ranked end of season. Illinois was the only ranked team they beat last year. They ended at 8-5 with a bowl game win over a 6 win VT. So I could agree they were not bad, but probably not good either. Above average unless we are going to start making the case that 8-5 is good. I'd say the same for Vanderbilt, who I think can probably get to 7 wins again this year.

The entire reason they came up was a poster was defending Penn States ranking. I pointed out the struggles PSU had with Bowlimg Green, Minnesota and USC last year. The same poster then used the single Vanderbilt game to compare to Penn State's 3 struggles against mediocre to bad teams.

@SL Xpress Compared Franklin to Mack Brown. I think it a very apt comparison. I do disagree with his take on Kotelnicki as I don’t think Kotelnicki is the problem. Rather, given Franklin's propensity to be "Sacred to death" he pulls the offense play calls back from Kotelnicki and goes full Turtle Tom. Joel Klatt had a pretty good coverage of it last year on one of his videos.

I was purposeful in my wording in order for logic that you espouse here. They weren’t “good”, but you guys were maligning their seasons and both were above historic (post 1960 for Minnesota) standards for their programs.

Vandy isn’t sneaking up on anybody this year. I love Pavia, but it’s a tough ask to walk into Tuscaloosa and Austin and pick a giant off in either place. If I squint, I can see 6-6/7-6/6-7.

I agree on Kotelnicki. He’s highly regarded and what he ran with Liepold was sophisticated. James Franklin is a rape-enabling pussy and he’s the problem for PSU’s offense. I have ZERO doubt that that penis lookalike is going to shrivel up like George Costanza against Ohio State. Probably Oregon too, but OSU is a given. Franklin is the worst kind of villain in college football. A true weasel with a history of doing bad shit but then … he’s also really boring and predictable.

Mack thinks that is pretty damn embarrassing.  1-10 versus your main conference rival.  Woof.

Yeah, even with his relative struggles against Oklahoma, Mack was 7-9 in those games.

Well, it was on YouTube on Klatt's show and I found the following but I'm putting hold on what I claimed was his take. I might have confused it for his take on Ryan Day. I'm reviewing and will confirm one way or the other and apologize if I remembered incorrectly.

In the interim, here is his take post the loss to OSU. Amusingly, he predicts the ND game... accurately.

Heck, I felt like I predicted the Notre Dame game accurately.

I'll say this. That SMU game could have been a lot closer than it ended up being. The SMU defense was giving Penn State all they could handle, early. The SMU defensive front in particular weren't exactly getting road graded. But the offense completely imploded. It was like our first game against Georgia, except worse. Finally it just felt like the defense gave up, either for being on the field too long or hopelessness. Whatever feather James Franklin was able to put in his cap because of that win, sure feels like a mirage to me.

I'll also say that while I wasn't exactly rooting for Penn State, I sure enjoyed the crying from SMU boosters who were late to the game because of the horrendous local airport situation in Happy Valley. By the time they got there after spending millions putting together that roster, the game was over. That was awesome.

In any case, thanks in advance for your research, @BurntEyes. I appreciate it. You don't have to do it, and I don't take it for granted.

I can't believe how much I've enjoyed Joel Klatt over the years. He's outstanding in the broadcast booth and in his general comments about college football as a whole. It helps that he always seems to give Texas the benefit of the doubt in different ways. I hated him as a QB at Colorado. I got such a kick when we knocked him out of the conference championship game. But in this role he's absolutely one of my favorites. He has some great breakdown videos I've thoroughly enjoyed, which just covers some basics of the game. I've sent links to a lot of those to people I know.

@SL Xpress You're welcome and at this point I'm searching not just for you but to confirm whether or not my old man memory is getting worse. Further, while I disagree with some of his takes and disliked him at CU, right now I firmly believe he's the best in the business. He occasionally has what I think is a controversial take, but always backs up his logic even if I find it flawed. He certainly knows a lot more anout the game than me and I like that he does not dumb down his content for mass consumption. It's extremely refreshing in today's sport broadcasting world.

It doesn't stop there. And then you look at the results of the rest of those seasons, and you come to a quick understanding there was something between the ears of those Texas teams. And it started with Mack. Then you go back and look at how badly his teams shit the bed against Florida State, and you realize there's a pattern.

I'll never forget touring the facilities the week after the Nebraska win in '98. The administration had images from that game plastered everywhere like a new covering of wallpaper. I'm not exaggerating. It was everywhere. Like Mack had got some kind of monkey off his back. Nope. The monkey was still there. It would just take a couple of years to manifest. But let's face it. All of those wins over Nebraska were hilarious. And that was Mack, too. He beat Sherrill. He beat Saban. We beat a great Michigan team, beat USC, regardless of how much of an impact VY had on those teams. James Franklin's ineptitude and puckered ass syndrome is on a different level entirely.

Well, I don’t want to turn this into yet another MB hate thread so I will just add this and move on. Mack never, ever, coached the team to putting the foot on the throat of opponents. I almost never felt confident a team was done because once we had the momentum or lead, it seemed to always swing. I think that stems from a truth in what MB said way too often that permeated the players, fear. VY was a force, without fear, as was Colt and their leadership propelled the rest of the team despite our HC shitting his pants on the reg.

Now back to PSU, I think there a similar problems at the HC with even worse results. Day has clearly overcome his issues and they are stacked. Texas is stacked but I firmly believe part of the issue last year was faith in the offense and particularly the QB from the rest of the team. I don't want to rehash that topic and instead will turn to this year. Arch will provide the sort of faith that VY and Colt inspired on their teams. Further, I think Arch's abilities will let Sark finally go full Sark offensively. It's going to take a minute for our OL to fully gel, but I think our D might actually be better this year which, I know, is a crazy prediction. I have a pretty crazy prediction for this year which is we beat OSU, lose to Florida, obliterate ou sux, struggle against UK then we start hitting on all cylinders and wreck everyone left on the schedule, including Georgia. It's going to be a very tough year for aggie and pig. Will it be enough to win it all... we shall see, but I do a room reservation in Miami.

Hence my take that Texas and OSU should be 1 and 2. I don't know why Klatt continues to out faith in PSU or more accurately it's head coach.

I doubt it will go on for long. I joined when it was announced that Texas would join the SEC, but I didn't have any desire to post until Georgia fans and talking heads lost their collective minds after the Atkinson, Johnson, Cooper commitments.

Concussed?

But seriously - Texas and Ohio State are the clear #1 and #2 in the country - it's pretty damn obvious when they got 70% of the first place votes.  Fans can squabble about 3-6 all they want, but that's where ND, PSU, Georgia and Clemson are.

Ohio State, ND and Oregon have big QB question marks
Clemson has the best returning QB
ND has the best returning RB
Texas has the best returning defense + Arch and some darn good skill positions
Ohio State has the best returning skill positions at WR and TE (Klare)

Texas, Ohio State, Clemson, ND have the coaching edge over Penn State

Me or Klatt? Never mind, doesn't matter the answer is yes, multiple times for both.

Otherwise, agreed on all aspects. I'd even give Michigan and Oregon the coaching nod over PSU and I don't have a ton of faith in Moore.

I can get behind you're first point, but I think it's a full on punchers brawl and Arch having a tad more experience thus composure than Sayin or whomever OSU ends up trotting out and Texas D ends up being the difference.

For Bama, I think giving the points at 13.5 is probably safe, but I still wouldn't place that bet.

So it's Bama -13.5 at Doak Campbell? I'd still give the points in a heartbeat. Mike Norvell's buyout is going to keep his job for him for a bit, but the game has caught up to him and then some.

FSU was one of the first to really focus on winning in the portal and they had their pick of the litter out of the gates. Not any more.

They are starting this year the following guys on offense who are homegrown: <crickets chirping>. Zero guys. The guys they will be starting were a bunch of players from other programs who were casted off or at small schools. Roydell Williams from Bama. Squirrel White from Tennessee (but he's so fast! can he catch?). Duce Robinson from SC. The dipshit loudmouth who was benched at BC is now the starting QB for them. The OL is likely to be 5 guys from 5 different programs that are all on campus for the first time.

Defensively, they have like 3 homegrown starters. Most of the defenders they've brought in to start haven't even been full time starters at their prior stops in Bama, Nebraska, UCF, Syracuse, etc.

That is a program that lost its soul when they lost their QB and their CFP appearance and they won't see daylight again until there's regime change, if then. I actually hope "The Snub" is a curse that sits on top and shits on top of that fucking place for the next century. No one has been given the benefit of the doubt more when it comes to getting special treatment for title contention than FSU. And they stunk it up every time they were the team that got helped out into the CFP or BCS title game. They get it in the other direction one time, can't get over it, and the rest of us have to hear about it. Take Alabama all the way up to 28 points. They're going to crush FSU.

Omg this dude is hilariously an idiot

First he says they are gonna win, or heavily implies it

Then he said "We stand on what I said. I said what I said and we stand on that."

Bro, who is we, you and your multiple personalities?  None of your teammates said what you said.

Shit, I thought you were using a little bit of hyperbole. but nope. Looks like 5 projected starters out of 22.
