IMO it takes the big P5 schools banding together to make a change. Pushing back against the Sexton’s out there. If all of them said nah we ain’t doing this shit anymore. 4 years to show all the bench marks for improvements however that looks and make contracts incentive based. Make the CCG and so on. The expectation by year four is you should be competing for a conference title. Given all the party in the league with the portal and eventual clamping down on the NiL stuff to a degree four years isn’t a big ask. Look at Cignetti. It can be done. Contracts with incentives to me are the only way. Renewal on a yearly basis. Everything is out in the open and unless for cause firings mid season each contract is evaluated at the end of the season. Idk it seems logical to me.

cue 19,000 of you quoting this post and telling me how dumb it is. lol. 😂

Honestly would like @closetojumping thoughts on the out of control contracts and what is a better solution, many of these schools just flushed about a combined $100,000,000 to pay coaches to fuck off. Sorry for summoning you CTJ—but you have ideas about this topic I am sure. 🤘🏼

The biggest change needed is the guaranteed money scam.  Schools should say yep, your money is guaranteed unless you are fired for cause... losing football games is a cause.

You done fucked up there.

Coaching search firms are about as useful as a bunch of new-hire McKinsey Consultants coming into your company HQ and telling you how to "improve efficiencies".

Eh, the main purpose of search firms is to get around FOIA.  They don't tell anyone who to hire; they mainly run the mechanics of the search (collecting applications, contacting Jimmy Sexton, calling references, etc.)

So why pay them a "ton of money" to do clerical work?

Because universities consider it to be very valuable to not have to comply with FOIA requests when hiring coaches.

Oh I get why they use firms to dodge the FOIA stuff, just wondering why it costs "tons of money".  Maybe they should let ChatGPT do it, couldn't be any worse than 90% of coaching hires.

Stuff costs what people are willing to pay.  Even college football coaches.

OAKLAND, Calif. -- College football coach John Beam, who was featured in the Netflix series "Last Chance U," has died after being shot on campus, the Oakland Police Department said Friday, and a suspect has been arrested.

Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell announced the coach's death Friday, one day after the shooting. Few other details were available. It was the second shooting at a school in Oakland in two days.

Mayor Barbara Lee described Beam as a "giant" and a mentor, educator and lifeline for young people.

"For over 40 years, he has shaped leaders on and off the field, and our community is shaken alongside his family," Lee said.

The search firms do a lot of research identifying candidates that aren't on the obvious list. Sure the AD can pick up the phone and call all the people that make the obvious candidate list that every outlet publishes but they're not going to pour through the list of every coordinator and every lower division head coach. That's my take on their obvious value.

Search firms are solely a CYA mechanism.  One that doesn't work.  "The coach flamed out, but the search firm recommended him!  It's their fault!".  No, Mr. AD, it's on you, like it or not.

Wouldn't he be a better fit for a school in southern part of Arkansas?

Looked him up and he was Head Coach of the South Alabama team that whooped Gundy’s ass two years ago lol. He’s from Springfield, MO and Fayetteville, AR, so not far from Stillwater and knows the area. I’d take him no problem. Heaven knows we could use some defensive prowess. It’s gonna need a massive turnaround.

Gameday just reported "breaking news" that Franklin is in the "early stages of talks to become the Virginia Tech head coach."  Guess he's going to VaTech.

Seems like that’s been reported three times or so in the past month….but, it will be a great hire for them. It’s completely possible he will have VaTech in the CFP before PSU fixes itself.

If Arky hired coach O, there cannot be anyone who has failed upwards more than him. And I would hate it because the motherfucker can recruit.

How much of recruiting has been replaced by "here is a bag of cash", which Arkansas is thought to be about B12 level and not SEC level in football?

Looking at the market and watching names come off the board due to early deals or extensions, I am thinking that several SEC teams are going to get stuck with a steamy pile of shit retread or a totally untested lower-level hire. There are little big names out there and lots of big $$ jobs firing coaches wanting a better coach..

Search firms used in head coaching hires 2008-2020.

Korn Ferry’s record boosted heavily by telling Michigan to hire Harbaugh, which seems hilarious that UM needed to pay $250k to a firm for that one.

Probability most because of Pittman, but Orgeron can actually sell a product, he just can't maintain or use said product to its  potential, so they'll probably keep the "$100k hand shake" until they miraculously fall into an above average coach, giving them hope, get good recruits, only to fail again.

I didn't expect a bunch of 2nd rate golfers to be the best at picking CFB coaches.
