I do wonder how many data points the NCAA needs to see the failed idea of awarding the Tulanes of the world auto qualifiers is not the way.

a 12 playoff is just moronic.sorry but it is. Should have been capped at 6. We all know this but somehow play along

I commend you for this.

No system was better than when Texas-USC played.

The flaws as they are now isn’t just about who gets in either.  Ole Miss and Oregon were gifted first round wins.  People bag on A&Ms schedule, but I think the A&M win over ND is better than the Ole Miss win over OU.  I believe Ole Miss has now played 9 home games.  They haven’t proven shit.  Oregon hasn’t either but at least their strength of schedule is solid.

Another element is that OU had an extra week to heal and prep for their game.  They probably lose by 30 otherwise.  It’s not about that one game.  It’s about an advantage that they in no way earned.

Tech earned the bye exactly how?  Oh right, they beat BYU.  But actually that may be worse than the 5 seed as Oregon runs less of a risk of being rusty while playing a home with almost no chance of losing.

There are simply too many teams, too few games and too many unbalanced schedules.

Personally, I don’t care that a 9-3 gets a chance against a 0 or 1 loss team.  But this year, we were a true threat to everyone.  Most years, damn near all years, that is not the case.

There was a discussion on this very site about scheduling tough non-conference games with a number of people convinced that a more inclusive playoff encouraged that.  I’ve read many convinced that such a schedule is not conducive to a playoff invite.  The more teams you include the more teams there are that cannot incur an additional loss.  We’re talking mid tier P4 teams that are hoping in their best years to secure one of the few remaining seeds.

Hell people aren’t even smart enough to realize conference championships can be de facto playoff games.  You won’t get certain parties to relinquish power within the structure.  You can’t even get 30 people on here to agree to the parameters.  For those reasons, smaller is preferred for my tastes.

The only qualifiers I do like are automatic qualifiers. If you can’t win your conference you don’t belong in any playoffs.

The Tulanes and JMUs of the world make it into the playoffs because the NCAA/Big10/SEC lawyers do not want to have to deal with accusations using the words cartel, anti-trust, collusion, etc.

At 12 teams, it is safer to include them and hear the cries and moans of the fans rather than deal with some hypothetical lawsuit.

That said, we have seen 8 teams in the past 2 days.  Texas has already beaten 2 of them and would easily handle 4 more.  The other 2 (Oregon and OleMiss) might put up a fight, but Texas is in those games.

As noted, last year’s 12-team playoff yielded #5, #6, #7 and #8 in the final 4, with #8 winning.  It worked.

So far this year, we have #6, #10, and #11 advancing with #5 a virtual certainty.

The antitrust angle of this is the reason the playoff structure is the way it is. But they have to do something to not let more than 1 shitty team in. I would rather have an 8 team playoff, with top 3 ranked conference champions with auto qualifiers, but wasting a spot on a shitty team when only 7 others qualify doesn't seem right either.

I'm not a fan of going to 16 teams, so 12 teams with the 3 top ranked conference champions feels right.  With some rules around having to be ranked in the top 20 to be an at-large.

16 best teams. No auto bids whatsoever. All independents are playoffs ineligible until they join a conference.

Make it fucking happen.

Fuck that. 12 is too many.  Eight teams.  Top two get byes.  Quarters, semis then final.

No fucking byes.

No conference championship games.

The issue is coming up with a system to pick the top 16.

No fucking auto bids.

16 just leads to more blowouts.  It’s already watered down.  Let’s be honest.  Year in, year out there are about six teams maybe that can win it and it’s usually the same names.  Like it or not.

JMU and Tulane being in this puts the CFP on clown show level.  The entire thing is unserious.

But auto qualifiers for winning crappy conferences are dumb.

So is 5 teams from one conference who allegedly play a season to determine the cream of their crop.

But here we are.

I mean when the conferences are so imbalanced that there are like five teams that would win two of the other conferences in one of them…

Maybe.  Maybe not.  Aggy had that argument today...until they didn't.

True they might not have won the ACC.  I think UGA, Ole Miss, Bama, and Texas would have.  I think Vandy and OU might have.  Maybe A&M with some luck.

This doesn't math.  It needs to be 6 with 2 byes or just 8 no byes.

Well Tulane is ranked 11th so they would still have been in so people would still be furious and panicking. And JMU is 12th so your solution to this problem wouldn't solve it at all.

Tulane is 20 and JMU is 24. You need to re-read his post. His solution would solve it.

Since neither tOSU nor Tennessee won their conference I’d been fine if that game never happened because they weren’t in the playoff.

Well then that's dumb in the day of these huge mega conferences and no real orderly way of creating some schedule parity within them.

Math doesn’t work to give top two teams byes with 8 teams. I think it’s going to 14 teams, with top 2 getting byes, at first opportunity to expand.

Well, that’s dumb today to have huge mega conferences instead of smaller regional conferences that can crown a champion then have the champions play each other. Seems much better than a bunch of bitches whining about fairness and second and third chances to prove it on the field when they don’t like the results on the field. Win your games or shut the fuck up.

If there were 16 teams this year, the percentage of blowouts to games played goes way down. I would argue that with the 13-16 teams, you would be adding 4 games and none of them would be blowouts.

Yeah imagine some Wild Card team winning the Super Bowl or World Series or Stanley Cup?  Like it’d never happen, right?

People who argue this are some of the most stubborn message boarders out there, and really dumb. A truly lethal combo.

No fucking way does it go to 14.

It's just a bye for the B1G and SEC champ every year.  Fuck that to hell.

Dumb is comparing a sport with 32 teams and an objective playoff system comparing it to a sport with well over 100 teams and a subjective playoff system.

People who make that argument are some of the dimmer the dim bulb message boarders. Almost as embarrassing as those posters who make new accounts under new names and pass themselves off as new.

It's probably going to 16. And yes, it will be because that's what the money conferences want.

Ill take 3 teams from each P4 and push the G5 to their own championship playoff. Would have 4 at larges that the committee can invite if they exist at all.  No FCS ooc and make it a 10 team conf schedule for all P4. ND can pay to play the P4 teams with all of that money they don't split or join a conf. Rankings should be based on a composite; SOS, OFF/DEF pt  differential and winning % based on a Modified Mean. No playoff byes. All conf use the same tie breakers ( performance above spread would be my choice, because good teams win great teams cover) All OOC games must take place before Week 7. If we have to have a smaller field then shrink the auto bid to top 2 teams from each p4 because 3rd place is bullshit . Finally, no intra conf games in first two rounds of playoffs. Nobody should see a conf rematch unless it is in quarter or finals.

I’m repeating Klatt. He thinks there is support for the two top teams to get a bye. The question was posed about his thoughts about a 16-team playoff. It was unclear whether he thought that would be a temporary step to 16. This was a few months ago, and he seemed to have inside knowledge about it moving to 14, but 14 may never happen.

How about comparing it to 300+ college basketball or baseball teams?  High school football?

Schedule parity isn’t why OSU lost the big10

Id be fine with getting rid of bowls and having a 16 team playoff

12 to 16 isn’t a big enough jump to get rid of the bowls. Bowls aren’t going anywhere until playoff has serious expansion to 32.

The first round this year and last year pretty much proves 12 is too many, so what are they going to do? Expand to 16 lol. 6-8 seems like the best number, but the issue going forward is these mega conferences that create schedule imbalances. With the committee valuing win-loss record above everything else I’m not sure how that is resolved. Even with 16 I think simple is better, just take the top 16 ranked teams.

I’ve been drinking a tad -

14 team playoff.

12 picked by the old fuckers who are picking now.
2 with 6+ wins and based purely on viewer opportunity.

is it 4-13, 3-14 or play-in?

Should’ve been play in.  Texas @ JMU and ND at Tulane (or vice versa).

Texas and UND get at least 2 games in the above format.  Better teams win.    If either sucks, so it goes.

You’re arguing for something that is not done in any sport at any level. Your proposal would be a significant money loser and would never be considered. Conversation over.

I’m fine to go to 16 with 7ish auto bids for the conferences. Winning your conference should mean something.  If FBS is a 130+ school thing but none of the bottom 80 have even a chance to win a title, what are we even doing here.

16 means no byes so a top seed—who earned the right—gets to play a Tulane type team.  But you still need to win the same number of games as everyone else in the postseason to win.

I'm sorry, but who fucking cares? There are always fucking blowouts. In every sports. Everywhere. All over the world. At every level.

The CFP national title game has been played 11 times so far and 5-7 of them, depending on your definition, have been fucking blowouts. It's goddamn football, blowouts happen, no matter how "good" the two teams are on the field.

We don't assign a champion based on who "should" win, or who has the most talent on a piece of paper, that's the whole fucking point of a playoff. There's a reason no other sport in the god damn world runs a condensed, super special snowflake format like college football does. People with this mentality just want to be handed a trophy without having to play the games.
