Las Vegas go hard or go home thread

I never made it to the ball, but Fremont was hopping except for the polar express winds.

Also, fuck Bell Trans shuttle. I've taken rides in Jamaica that were less sketchy. My shuttle to the airport never showed and wound up taking an Uber, which I should have done in the first place.

Need recs for a good restaurant off the Strip -- something unique and/or where the locals hang.  Can be any kind of cuisine.  Already have Piero's lined up one night, but need something for a second night.  Have done Lotus of Siam (which is outstanding) the last two times we were in Vegas, so looking for something different this time.

If you're at Piero's on Thursday night, shout "dickbutt" and I'll send @SydneyCarton over to give you a wedgie.

If you shout "Greg Davis for President," CTJ will sign your date's chest. Gender doesn't matter.

Clearly you've got a couple of outstanding choices available to you on Thursday.

I'll be there in December.  Do you think Piero's will be reopened by then after repairing the damage you two hooligans are bound to cause this week?  Or should I make back-up plans?

I'll be there in December too. Probably Saturday, 12/17. If you're there then, please do not shout dickbutt or anything else. There's no way I could explain any of it to my wife or the other couple, and, hell, my wife is even familiar with Surly.

So hopefully we don't burn it to the ground this week. Or end up at the Spearmint Rhino upon leaving there.

I'm gonna go with Mayfield Supper Club.  The menu looks good and you have heard decent things so you go and then your wife gets lobster thermidor made with a lobster tail that tastes like it was shipped from New England via the Pony Express and the best dish anyone at the table had was a side dish of mashed potatoes.

FYI, today is the grand opening of Peter Lugar.  Maybe it's been mentioned in the thread, but this location will take credit cards:

He’s been on my flight also, Carrot Top not SC ha. I chatted with him before boarding he was friendly. It was quite bizarre because these 2 girls sitting in front of coach were flying to Vegas to get married and they asked the FA to ask Carrot Top (who was in first) if they could get a picture with him. Dude got up and went back in aisle and took a pic with them mid flight. Never seen that before.

But if you search his social media (I don’t recommend this ha) over the years he’s posted videos about behavior of people on planes so let’s keep an eye out for the SC edition? Without knowing any of the facts, I’m already gonna take SC side of any argument. Carrot Top is pretty whacky IRL as one might expect.

Just got to Vegas today, staying at the Cosmo. The view overlooking the track and bellagio is insane. The race is going to be so intense. Sadly I won’t be here for it but it looks like some serious parties are happening.

We are going to at least be able to watch some of the practice Thursday.

My boss is well connected in Vegas and had plans for the race since announced. Has great tix and great room at Caesars.

Called me at 6am from Vegas. Wtf. Some work crisis. It’s 4am his time. Aren’t you at the race? What’s going on?

“I gotta fuckin kidney stone! I gotta go home! (to San Diego). So he had been hammering oxys thru the night and was working on going to the airport. Shitty timing.

Off to a hot start:

Tempers flared at the Las Vegas Grand Prix after the first practice of the $500 million race was halted nine minutes into the session Thursday night because Carlos Sainz Jr. ran over a water valve cover that badly damaged his Ferrari. The FIA said Sainz hit the concrete frame around the cover. It took another 11 minutes for the governing body to call all cars off track so it could inspect the entire circuit.

The start of a second practice scheduled for midnight Thursday was delayed, and Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur raged that the "just unacceptable" incident would keep Sainz from participating. Ferrari had to replace the entire chassis and other components and was summoned to speak to F1's stewards to determine if the repairs would draw a penalty.

I was busy and F1 pretty much completely flew off my radar last weekend.  Not a big fan in any event but under normal circumstances would have paid some attention.  I'm guessing nobody went? Curious how much of a cluster F it all was.   I heard that the race itself was pretty good at least for those into it.

Did they let ol boy fix the damage or pull the backup out without penalty?

They fixed the car and had a 10 place penalty no way around it because of the rulebook. He got hosed after qualifying 2nd and then started in 12th.

The race was better than expected given the setup. I could have gone but opted to sit out year one with the potential clusterfuck situation. Word is the logistics weren’t too bad for fans.

It was a big deal event for sure. Private jet parking overbooked and jets did drop off and had to park in adjacent states. And the money fronted before the weekend for gambling set records, beating out the big fight weekends.

I truly expect things to go much smoother next year. This was a huge learning curve along with growing pains. Construction is done on the course so that will help traffic. Not sure how long side road construction is planned to last. That was a big SNAFU with no way to take alternate routes. Next year it will just be setup and teardown. The casinos reportedly did record business and are happy. I did not know until the start of the race that F1 made the new LV facilities their US home.
