I wonder how similar his approach is to Strong's while at Texas. I've asked about it and it's apparently not that dissimilar, but for different reasons.

I think Texas focusing on AZ, Vegas, Colorado and Utah is super smart. I'd love to see it grow, as they've only dipped toes in those places. No one can honestly claim ownership of any of those areas and there is substantial talent yearly to merit attempting to cherrypick.

You don't Herm Edwards bro?

Has he even visited Clemson or Washington?  When he visited Texas he also visited LSU and OUsucks and they didn't make the cut.  Bama' already has 4 or 5 DL commits.  Shit I don't want to get my hopes up but we may have a shot.

From what I've read on Bama boards, they're planning on taking 6 or 7 DL, and Fatti probably has a spot reserved in their class. They currently have 3 DL committed, although there's speculation that Sopsher is a silent commit and just doesn't want to deal with the craziness of living in Louisiana while being committed to Bama for a long period of time

For the sake of USC fans, I hope Helton has a better handle on things than Strong. I would say that he does. USC really isn't out of it with the California recruits, they do appear to be behind on a few big names.

Colorado has always been a pretty open state, but without much top end talent.

Prep football in Arizona has gotten much better. I wouldn't blink an eye if Texas offered the top five Arizonans in every cycle. The only competition in Arizona are USC and UA.

Great is taking it pretty far. The reality is we missed out on a lot of our top targets and were able to salvage a good class late.  A guy like Ojomo won't pop up with two months to go every year. Carson and Williams are projects. We don't get Ossai if there's no coaching change, and we were fortunate Coburn went to Westfield.

We scraped together a DL class but that kind of thing isn't sustainable.  We've missed out on our top target already this year. Stripling is likely not coming here. I expect us to get Nana, but it's hard to say the reason we get him is because of Giles. A better recruiting effort probably means Nana is already a sure thing. Mowry is already committed to aggy. That's the top 4 DL in the state. 3 are close to guarantees not to come here and the fourth is still up in the air. Now, I see us offering OOS 3 stars. This is not the optimal way to handle DL recruiting every year. Herman needs to recognize this and address it. So far, he has not.

Missing on NaNa underscores how prescient this take was.

Bama will tell him whatever he needs to hear to assuage the numbers concerns, and because they're Bama, he'll probably listen. Plus, they have other advantages that Fud mentioned.

But, who knows? Maybe we win 10+, Langi puts in overtime on this one and something tangible comes out of it. I'd rather be in it, even if we're just a hat on a table at this point, than out of it.

Chip Kelly has never been known to be an elite recruiter. I think people just assumed that the in-built advantages of UCLA, the excitement over his offense, and an administration that seems to actually give a shit about succeeding at football would change that.

Mike Roach: Rising DL Taurean Carter excited about Texas offer

Taurean Carter's stock is starting to rise. The three-star Mansfield Legacy defensive is seeing more attention during the spring evaluation period. Over the weekend, he picked up offers from TCU and Texas. Though schools are offering later, Carter is taking it all in stride. He said that he feels blessed to even be recruited at all. “It’s going good,” he said. “I’m just blessed to be where I’m at."

Carter did release a Top 10 before he received the Texas offer. Though the Longhorns didn’t make the initial cut, Carter said they will definitely make his Top 8. Carter has been in contact with Texas defensive line coach Oscar Giles, who watched Carter in action at his spring game, and he feels honored to receive an offer from the Longhorns. “It’s a blessing,” he said. “Texas could be a great fit for me. I can’t wait to see what they are about, because the future is now.”

Carter visited Austin during the spring, and he had the chance to tour the Texas facilities. He mentioned the facilities along with the overall vibe on campus as a reason he is interested in Texas. “Just the atmosphere, man,” Carter said. “The workout facility and type of program they have along with the coaching staff is incredible. Plus, I’ve got family down there.” The Texas coaches have been to Legacy many times during the spring. Carter’s teammate Jalen Catalon is a huge target for Texas, and Carter said the two have talked about playing together. “Yes sir,” Carter said. “Me, him and Jeff Carter, my cousin, have talked about it.”

Carter is planning a return trip to Austin in June, and he said he will take his official visits during the fall before making a decision. At 6-foot-3, 260 pounds, Carter is ranked as the No. 49 strong-side defensive end in the nation and No. 96 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.

He was elite at paying Willie Lyles for services rendered.

He mentioned his cousin Jeff Carter, is this the same Jeff(ery) Carter at Aledo?

I mostly read the recruiting threads and add some inanity from time to time. Sometimes I add a perspective, but not often and rarely about specific player's ability.

The recruiting thread at Shaggy was great because it remained light-hearted and often witty when recruiting news was scarce. The threads there were a refuge from the endless repetition of the football board and the entrenched mutual dislike many posters were addicted to. On the football board there was an addiction to contention over any point no matter how meaningless.

The recruiting thread here feels like it has been invaded by the football board posters who are annoyed that their readership has fled to another place to get away from them. These posters arrive on this thread which used to be fun and beat it to fucking death with tired observations and opinions.

Some people actually follow sports for fun.

When somebody writes that it's foolish to get one's hopes up or he himself will wait before being optimistic, my first thought is who the fuck cares about your timetable for optimism or your presumption about the state of another poster's expectations?

Who the fuck cares about an individual's crusade to make the same tired fucking joke/observation about a coach or player no matter the context?

Example:

Hey, we got a verbal from a highly ranked wide receiver!

Tim Beck Hater: Can he call plays?

Tom Herman Hater:  Mensa gonna recruit all WRs this cycle?

Guy Who Thinks All Recruits Should be Locked Up by June 1: I guess we're not going to get any linemen this year. We're screwed.

Recruiting Domino Specialist:  I guess this means we're not getting the other guy we want.

All of the Above:  The coaches are idiots for not openly doing what I think they should be doing. Fuck Giles!

The above is arguably relevant but a beating.

I'll not bother with examples of useless arguments that are basically masturbation and should be taken to a private place for continuation. You can find those on just about every page.

Lastly, some say, "well, there's nothing going on. What else should we talk about?"

That's the point. SHUT THE FUCK UP FOR A FEW HOURS.

The fish aren't biting today, why don't we pour garbage in the stream until they are biting. The other fisherman won't mind wading through it and it's fun!

We should all abstain from posting until we're fairly sure we're adding information, entertainment or a somewhat fresh take. Goofy is generally acceptable. Sententious is not. We'll all fall short of this standard from time to time, but we should at least try to make one thread in the sports boards informative and fun.

I’m no recruiting analyst or coach, but I like what I’ve seen of Carter. I also like that he seems amped about our offer. Hope he continues to develop his game through the fall.

Yeah his film looks pretty good to me.  I mentioned earlier, but someone posted a while back that he handled Bragg at a Rivals camp.

No USC is interesting. He's cousins with Tua and his brother, fwiw

Pretty interesting, since CBs were favoring USC so far and his last UOV was to LA last week. Does that mean those are the 5 OVs he's going to take? He's a beast, so I don't want to get my hopes up, but getting him would not suck.

In an interview with Blair Angulo, Faatui cited breaking down film with film with Giles as one of the reasons Texas made his top 5.

So Giles still sucks or nah?

Yes

Let me know when Giles signs anyone worth a shit.

(Not counting all the recruits other coaches help him with)

Got dam you love trolling about Giles. lulz. If we land Faatui, I pledge to never say another negative word about DL recruiting in this thread. Not that anyone needed more incentive to want us to land a 5 Star DT...

I posted the Rivals video a while back. I’d never heard of Carter but he jumped out on film so I looked him up and mentioned him. His game tape doesn’t jump out the same way him owning Bragg did at the camp. Ideally, we could’ve kept him warm and then jumped on him if he had a great senior year, but I do like his potential a lot.

Any thoughts on T. Carter's teammate, Enoch Jackson?

6'0 290 NT. Not sure if we need him after signing Coburn and Ojomo, and landing Sweat who might eventually be a NT similar to Graham

Top 48 in Arizona : https://247sports.com/Season/2019-Football/CompositeRecruitRankings?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool&State=AZ

Jake Shipley is No. 2.

Ty Robinson is No. 4, Pola Gates is No. 5, and Liebrock is No. 7.

Robinson looks like JJ Watt's older brother.
