Stan Drayton

Bored during "Off Week" so decided to start this conversation.....

SIAP.... Have not seen a thread on Stan yet.

Curious as to why there's not more criticism of Stan Drayton from Surly Folks.  When Drayton arrived, I expected much better  player development and  recruiting at the RB position than we've seen thus far.  I'm still waiting to see an elite RB commitment show up for 2019 Class.

Both Young and Toneil have not progressed this Season.  Not sure why the RBs aren't used more in the passing game either.  And during 2017 Season the RB rotations were a joke.

Heard Alex Dunlap on the radio after BlowU game last week and here were some of his comments about Drayton:

Quote: "This is only the 2nd game that Keontay Ingram outsnapped Tre Watson.  And as far as I'm concerned,  That's Malpractice..... that's Bad Coaching.  What exactly has Stan Drayton really done?  He was the most valued hire of all these guys. Their running back rotations have been abysmal.  Texas hasn't got a running game going since he got here. And it took him this many games, to figure out that Keontay Ingram who rushes for over 6yds/carry is better than Tre Watson who rushes for 3.2yds/carry? "

So please Surly, what thoughts do you have on Stan Drayton thus far??

Toneil doesn't warrant much discussion.  When you put the ball on the ground, you're going to drop down the depth chart.  Some have categorized him as a malcontent, but I can't speak to that.

Young, for my money, always had a limited ceiling.

It's hard to tell what kind of impact Drayton has had on them, because we don't see them much.  I don't necessarily attribute that to coaching.

Ingram is obviously our best back, but also a true freshman.  Despite the moaning and groaning of the fan base, it's understandable that coaches want a veteran back handling the ball in crunch time.  And the majority of our season has been "crunch time."

I'm willing to wait until this recruiting season is over before making any definitive statements about Drayton.  Not only because of the talent/lack thereof we have had in the last few years, but also because running back is the position I'm least concerned about when it comes to coaching.

RB coach is supposed to be a stud recruiter because running the ball is athleticism and instincts which aren't coached.  If he can't recruit, then he's useless.  I don't follow recruiting enough to know his prowess in that arena, but it's not as simple as saying he hasn't signed a RB yet.  He damn sure better have more recruiting responsibilities than recruiting one player a year.

As Ghost of Shag touched on, RB coach is the position coach where recruiting is paramount.

Drayton did his job well in the 2018 cycle. He has been dealt a bit of a tough hand this cycle, because the state of Texas RB crop sucks this cycle and of our top 2 realistic targets, one is from Baton Rouge and the other is at the top of Alabama's board. He needs to make hay in 2020, though.

I will say I expected Drayton to be a bit more of rainmaker than it seems he has been, so far. No doubt his connections in Missouri have helped, but the true ace in the hole on our staff appears to be Bryan Carrington.

I think this is a dumb topic.

The two most reliable RBs are Watson (who is healthy) and Ingram (who is not healthy). There's your snap discrepancy. It's pretty obvious to anyone watching.

It's also pretty obvious that both are better than Danny (who I like, but who is better against a 3rd-4th quarter defense).

Carter can't hold the ball.

Pay me 9.95

Daniel Young played well against Mizzu..... Now in 2018 he looks worse so far.  Why hasn't Young or Toneil developed more.... that's the RB Coach's Job....

Drayton has yet to show any ability to develop TEXAS RBs since the best two RBs are a Grad Transfer and a True Freshman.

Toeneil hasn't developed because he puts the ball on the field constantly.  It helped cost us a games last year and he's did it throughout spring practice.

They are also trying to spread out carries with Ingram injured so he's fresh down the stretch and doesn't hit the Freshman wall.

Honestly, I would expect the RB coach be more of a recruiting rainmaker outside of his position. Getting stud RBs is obviously Job 1, but I hoped he would be a key player on other high-profile recruitments. Thank God Tim Brewster never limited his role to just recruiting TEs while he was here.

What's the story on Ingram's recruitment in 2018??  Thought he was always coming to Texas.... Agree that we all should expect Drayton "to be a bit more of a Rainmaker".

i like making fun of 9.95ers too.  But in this case I agree with Alex.....

Just seems funny how little we hear about this guy, and the willingness on Surly for folks to give him a pass on criticism.....

Why bother playing Young much if Watson and Ingram are better? That Mizzou defense was butt and Carter fumbles a ton.

Every regional program wanted Ingram. OU fought hard for him and aggy made runs at him under both coaching staffs.  That was a good recruiting job.

He's also the guy on the program with existing St. Louis connections. He's just very rarely on social media.

So, I'd like to see more, sure, but he's hardly been lazy.

This. Major Applewhite was once our running backs coach for crying out loud. The only qualification I could find Major had was he used to stare at Ricky William's ass as Ricky ran by through and around people.

Yep.  I saw an interview with Herman where he stated that the staff requires 2 things from their skill players: 1) BALL SECURITY and 2) total, fanatical effort.  He said that they can teach the rest.

To me he's a little too early to judge fully. He's here for recruiting and because he's worked with Herman before. His recruiting has been good, not great. RB development as been non-existent in my view. If you got a fumbling issue you just won't play. You can't catch, we just won't throw to you (we do throw to backs right?? once?). I haven't seen improvement made. We just move on to the next guy.

Land a contributor in this cycle and view improves. D. Brown looks solid in his film, but his run style reminds me a lot of Porter and I haven't seen anything more than a good high school back running up the middle behind a good offensive line. Really hard to tell how good he truly is.

Did D'Onta play for Texas "in the last few years"?  I'm continually surprised how often he gets left out of the conversation when it comes to great UT running backs, and your statement seemed to be more of the same.  Apologies if I misunderstood.

Have you seen our OLine? It has gotten better in pass protection this year but run blocking still has a lot to be desired. Last year we didn't have a running back and there wasn't much he could do about it. They went out and recruited Ingram who is our best back and Tre Watson (transfer) who is our most reliable back. Both clearly have the most carries on the team.

If we don't land one of Noah Cain (2019), Trey Sanders (2019), or Zachary Evans (2020) over the next 1 year and a half, then I'll be concerned. They have had one full recruiting class since they have been here, pump the brakes. I know it is a shocking development so hold onto to your seat for what I'm about to say, the RB position is heavily dependent on how good your OLine is.

You're either a good back or you aren't. You take the ball and you run as far as you can with it. What nuance is there?

No doubt OL development is critical to the run game.  And since some posters say Drayton did have to fight off other Schools in his recruitment of Ingram, then Stan deserves credit here along with getting Tre Watson  to come to Texas.

But it is fair to also expect to see more Development from last year's RBs like Danny Young.  Still not sure why the RBs aren't used more in the passing game.  And how about occasional  2 RB set where Danny Young could be used as a lead blocker.

Also saw another Post that states that Drayton's connections in Missouri do help in recruiting.....

What players has Drayton help add to the Roster besides Ingram, Watson and for 2019 class Brown??

Hope to see more from Drayton just like folks want better results from the other Texas Assistants......

IMHO most RB development takes place in the weight room.

Those are scheme issues at the OC-Committee level more than position coaching.

Cain is from Baton Rouge, and LSU wants him. They're winning. That's a tough ask.

Trey Sanders is allegedly the number 1 RB on Alabama's board. That's an even tougher ask.

Note that neither Sanders nor Cain currently live in Texas.

Derrian Brown is a solid complement to Ingram next year.

2020 has several promising prospects, such as Zach Evans, Ty Jordan, Seth McGowan, Kendall Milton, and Jase McClellan. If Drayton goes 0-fer there, then he deserves to be criticized. Until then, I'll wait.

If he were a stud recruiter we would see his name more closely attached to big-time non-RB recruits as well. It looks like his recruiting chops aren't about what good recruiters do, but is more about resume with RB development which is really only a sell to RB recruits. I guess he has some contacts up in Missouri that are proving fruitful, but the guy isn't a rainmaker. Unfortunately we aren't getting value from either of the traditional coaches (TE and RB) that are supposed to be your recruiting specialists. Hopefully we jettison Warehime and either just make Carrington a coach or go out and get a proven salesman.

You keep on this like a broken record. What are you expecting him to be? He's a true sophomore mid-3* recruit who is tough and has decent vision + one-cut running ability. He's not a gamebreaker, and as such isn't being played much when we have one true stud and a more experienced guy ahead of him who does everything the coaching staff wants.

I think having Watson and Ingram for this year is just fine.  With Coach Hand here now, I think things long-term are going to be great in both recruiting and development because I really felt the RBs had little to no chance last year to be great with the OL play.  Our run blocking is not on point yet, but I feel like they are being coached much better and developing as players which bodes well with the next batch of players and beyond.  I'd like to see Ingram next year (did he get stronger in the weight room, did he develop more sophistication in understanding the block/pass/run schemes) as a barometer as well.

Maybe if they aren't talking about you much it means you're doing your job. Ingram has been injured I think they are managing his snaps perfectly. We've stopped the stupid rotation giving weak ass RB's like Porter the ball. We're in the mix for some of the nations top RB's. What more do you want.

Thx Machinator....

1) Besides the Katy RB, if TEXAS misses on Cain & Sanders who else are they targeting at TH to go along with Brown for 2019 Season??

(They sure need more speed & quickness in the RB room....)

2) Will TEXAS consider bringing in another Grad Transfer RB for 2019?

closetojumping would know better than I, but it looks like if we strike out on Cain and Sanders we'll either take someone like Deondrick Glass or save the scholarship and find another grad transfer rental next season until we bring in another elite prospect in 2020.

I saw improvement late last Season for Young.  I expect improvement from a 2nd year back. In 2017 and early 2018 folks were screaming when Porter played and the horrible RB rotations... That's Drayton's fault.  Toneil showed some big play potential last Season..... now nothing.  Some blame poor attitude of Toneil, but why can't Drayton help him mature past that.....

I can tell you that Drayton was very unimpressed by the talent he had to work with last year. He targets elite backs almost exclusively, and he does well with them because he doesn’t suck their dicks. He actually coaches them up as he recruits them. He is the main reason Sanders loves us. He’s also a straight shooter. He straight up told Sanders and Cain that Sanders is his number one recruit at the position and Cain is his number two. Told them both that. Cain actually appreciated it because he’d been lied to by other programs.

I think Drayton will deliver. He’s a very good coach and recruiter. He had a dog shit offensive line last year with below average talent at RB. Ingram is hurt and on a pitch count, so I wouldn’t put his limited touches on Drayton.

I think it is hard to comment of coach effectiveness without knowing the particulars of the coaching staff honestly.

I get the vibe that Drayton doesn't have much say who goes in honestly. His job is to coach all RBs up and whatever offensive brain trust there is will call them in.

Carter's issues with the fumbles, if they exist, are an individual thing. Hard to blame the coach there.

I'm not defensive of any coach. I just think your criticisms are the equivalent of asking why the offensive coordinator / playcaller doesn't call the touchdown play every time.

I said on the old site that our personnel usage/rotations, though more prevalent on offense, were seen across the board last year. We took too long to get Gary Johnson on the field (and Wheeler/Hughes off). We wasted an offseason trying Hager at Mac. The WR over-rotations have been covered extensively. Our offensive Politburo committee thought that running 11 personnel with Garrett Gray at TE was tenable. We saw too much Porter, perhaps not enough Warren, and could have been more aggressive in deploying Young and Carter early on. The QB rotations to end the season were... interesting.

To me, that kind of systematic inefficiency is attributable to the head coach more so than position coaches.
