The Guitar Pron Thread

I figured the Casino issues were cheap guitar issues but was curious if there was some weird neck radius thing or something like that I didn’t know about. I’m a bit surprised that there’s not something in the 1500-2k range (anymore? I feel like the elitists were in that range) but this would be the one

of course the other surprise is that they don’t sell it in John Lennon rooftop natural

I've never played a casino but have owned a couple ES-330's and they were fine guitars, but very narrow in application imo.  Playability was on par with anything else I owned, but the tone was definitely different/unique being fully hollow with the trapeze tailpiece.  Not much sustain because of the trapeze, and they produced some very woody/boxy overtones that you'll love or hate.  Then there is of course the need to battle the feedback if you are wanting to play loud or with any sort of gain.

I think all that makes them very niche -- great for jazz, old-school blues and 60s light overdrive jangle but not much else.  A 335 with the TOM bridge and stop tailpiece is gonna be something you can play in any setting.  A 330 isn't that.  That's ultimately why I sold them, loved them when I wanted what they bring, but ultimately they were niche guitars that were too expensive to be a niche guitar given my budget.

They are like gibson/fender custom shop guitars.  Made in the USA in an Epiphone equivalent of a custom shop with high-end components.  I think they still offer some < $1000 variants, though.

That's the one you don't want right there.

I saw only two movies with my dad when I was a kid. Smokey and the Bandit, and the original Bad News Bears. Saw both at what is now the Alamo Drafthouse on Anderson Lane. I was cussing pretty freely from that point on.

The original Bad News Bears is the greatest sports movie of all time.

As for the tailpiece, my only experience with the trapeze tailpiece is on my 1970 335, and it's been no issue as far as tone goes.  I know some people don't love them, but I've not really noticed it.

Back on topic, my failed Epiphone Casino experiment.  It sure was pretty, but . . .

All in with the hard case, I only paid $500. used  Sold it to Chicago Music Exchange when it sat a while on Reverb for a little less.  Worth it to know I didn't need to chase that model.

I mean, I would have a hard time paying that much for an epi, but they haven’t always just been the Chinese Gibson brand. They had a line for a while called “Elitist” that I think were much more attractive from a value proposition- real deal solid Gibson level quality* guitars at “damn that’s an expensive epiphone” prices (rather than “damn that’s an expensive Gibson”).

*theoretical Gibson quality

Bought the guitar for my nephew. It just arrived. Gonna give it some time to adjust to the climate in the house. Hope it’s cool and doesn’t sound like dog shit

It’s pretty decent. The case is cool looking and it’s a hardshell which is nice. He’s gonna love it I think

I have been a HUGE Buddy Miller fan since the late 90s.  Dude is a PHENOMINAL guitar player, GREAT country singer, songwriter, producer and all around great guy.   I've been lucky to him with Emmylou, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch/David Rawlings, Patty Griffin, solo and with Julie.

This article goes in to a lot about his gear which I thought this crowd would enjoy.   Especially his $50 Wondre guitars.  In the article, he talks about not playing fast as much anymore.

Here is what he sounded like in 1996.  I was lucky enough to see this incarnation of Spyboy.....maybe the greatest trio ever assembled.  A balls-to-the-wall, full on rock-n-roll band.

Guitars

  • Two vintage Wandre electrics
  • 1954 Gibson J-45
  • Jerry Jones baritone
  • TEO mando guitar
  • Phantom Mando Guitar

Amps

  • Swart AST Pro
  • Fender Deluxe Reverb

Effects

  • Strymon El Capistan
  • Fulltone Supa-Trem2
  • Analog Man King of Tone
  • Dunham Electronics Sex Drive
  • Boss VB-2W Vibrato
  • Boss TU-3W Chromatic Tuner
  • Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner

Yeah. Just has it all.

And that rhythm section with Daryl Johnson and Brady Blade ain’t bad….. Mmmmmmmmmaple natural stain Yamaha recording custom drums.

Brady had quit playing professionally until Emmylou and Steve Earle convinced him to tour with each of them.   I was waiting in line to get in to see Spyboy and Brady came cruising down the sidewalk.  This venue is in a part of Atlanta with a ton of homeless people and trust fund 'artists' and jam band fans.  Brady was carrying a plastic grocery bag and resembling Crackhead Clevon Little.  He was starting to grow dreads and he was dressed like he had been on a bus all day....or under a bridge.  I noticed people trying not to make eye contact with this 'homeless beggar' about to hit up everyone in line for some money.   I walked towards him and shook his hand and he spoke to me for about 3 minutes then continued down the street.   Got back in line and it was deathly quiet.  I wonder if anyone recognized him when he went on stage.

Ah....the Hot Band.

I know I've posted this multiple times....but it never gets old for me.   And to watch all of those other rock legends and Huey Lewis watch him....and Nick Lowe's reaction.

I know people here have dicked around with Firefly guitars.  Anyone ever pick up a Harley Benton to see if they could make it worth a shit?  They seem to have a pretty good reputation on TGP for being a good value for the money and a good platform to mod from.  I'm considering picking one up just to be the equivalent of a 9th grade biology frog to dissect and learn from without risking the money invested in more valuable instruments.

PSA for Austin folks:  I took my G&L semi-hollow Tele into Austin Vintage Guitars yesterday to see if I could get a more reliable output jack.  Kevin McKinney (Soulhat) was working on an old Guild but talked to me about it for a few minutes.  Then one of the other guys wandered up, asked what the issue was, took a look, figured out that the lock washer on the back side of the jack (via the switch plate) had come loose, and fixed it all up.  No new parts needed, no charge for almost 30 minutes of labor.

I felt bad so I bought a t-shirt.  Good dudes over there.

My understanding is that Harley Bentons don't need much. Supposedly very good.

I bought a H-B Tele-style ‘52 as a beater/leave at the other house toy.  Tuners are extremely mediocre, good fret work, nice finish, pickups surprisingly decent.  Can’t imagine doing better for $149 or whatever I paid.  I’m gonna replace the tuners just for the hell of it.  Body and headstock shape aren’t perfect, but who cares?  Not gonna be on any album covers anytime soon…..

My guy does that a lot. I always stick a 20 under something on his bench against his objections.
