Yep, Secret Invasion was way worse. Way way way worse

Holy fuck I had actually forgotten about Secret Invasion.

It's the only Marvel show I haven't watched.

I watched the first 3 episodes, I enjoyed them but it still feels too Disney and "safe".

I just binged them tonight and really enjoy the show. Characters are well-written (Riri & Natalie are great together), the acting is good, and the story is compelling.

Great music, too. Kinda of a hip-hop spy vibe sound throughout.

Actually am cautiously optimistic about this one.

Man, it seems like we’re watching different shows. Everybody’s unlikable and the hero isn’t the least bit heroic. At least Secret Wars had Nick Fury. I’m sure I’ll keep watching but it’ll probably be hate watching by the time it’s done.

I stopped Watching Secret Invasion after a 3 or 4.  I stopped watching She Hulk after 2.  And I also never watched Loki 2.  I liked the first Loki series well enough but I'm just completely burned out on the multiverse.

I might give this a try.  If my kids like it, I'll watch it with them.

Same here.

Things I liked:

Ramos/The Hood
Riri as a conflicted/morally gray "hero"
The big bad (and portrayal by the actor)
Nat
Zeke
The integration of technology and magic
Musical choices
Visuals

Things I didn't care for:

The rest of Hood's crew (except maybe Cousin John)
Riri's perpetual stank face
Only 6 episodes (should have been 8-10 to flesh out a few things)

For 6 episodes over 2 weeks, I liked it enough.

Spoiler

It brought Mephisto officially into the MCU and did in a solid way

That makes it a top 3-4 Marvel TV show for me.

Riri's perpetual stank face

Though she was a small part of BP 2, this seemed her biggest contribution.  I’m totally confused by reviews that describe her as part of what works.

I didn’t dislike her; I actually enjoyed how multifaceted she was, watching as she struggles with overconfidence, anxiety and grief.

I just hated how she looks like she constantly smelled a dirty diaper.

Spoiler

And I liked that she didn’t make the hero’s choice at the end. Morally gray hero who struck a deal with the devil bc she can’t get over her grief and survivor’s guilt

I agree with all of these in general except the Hood crew. We enjoyed them as mostly comic relief.

Also agree with Riri character / actor. She did a few things i didn’t like with the perpetual scowling, but overall enjoyed her.

I disagree on more episodes. I think. Have a tight story. More episodes and then you get “filler” episodes. I guess maybe I should say do as many as the writers / directors think is a tight story. If it’s 6 great, if it’s 12 do that, but don’t do 12 if they say 6.

Ok I liked Thunderbolts.

Yeah It's really good...I'd say it's among the 2 or 3 best since Endgame(not saying much as they've ALL sucked except for Guardians 3 and maybe Shang Chi in a way?)

It's the most down to earth, deeper thinking movie they've had since the end of phase 4...almost a bit depressing till the end

It helps a lot that Florence Pugh and David Harbour both play their characters perfectly and have great on screen chemistry. I do not cry during movies and I damn near broke when they were having THAT father/daughter moment.

There could have been more character development outside of Yelena/Alexei/Bob, but it was their movie so I can forgive that.

Watched it last night. Also a huge fan. They hit a home run with that one

Florence Pugh

I’ve beaten poor Anthony Mackie to death upthread for not having sufficient charisma to play the lead anything, but she’s a great example of someone who is probably in the same relative tier in looks and talent and she totally pops off the screen in everything I’ve seen her in.

Some performers just have it.

I think Mackie has not had anyone do him favors on screenwriting since Civil War. The writing in the tv show and last movie was horrible. Conversely, he was great in his guest spot on The Studio. I guess we'll see when he's got the Russo writing for him again if it helps.

And his one mention in Thunderbolts is that he’s suing for the Avengers trademark and not speaking to Bucky anymore

I didn't realize that the base jump in the opening scene was her really jumping off that building and not her stunt double. She was cabled up but that was a real jump actually off the real roof of that building with no netting or anything underneath her had something gone wrong.

I was jeered when I said I loved Black Widow, but I thought it was an A-tier MCU movie based on a lot of what you said above. I think Black Widow coming out during covid made it fly under the radar too maybe.

I haven't seen Thunderbolts but it's the one MCU vehicle that's come out the past couple of years I am intending on seeing when I get some time.

I think you're right, and I also don't think it helped that Natasha was already dead after Endgame.  I enjoyed the movie but my kids who'd loved the entire MCU up to that point, had no desire to see Black Widow because "she's already dead, dad.  What's the point?"

And I think Disney might have thought she was dead too with the ole "ScarJo, we aren't paying you btw. thnx".

I actually thought of that drama when I saw Jurassic Rebirth in a "well, looks like it worked out for her that she got paid and didn't get blackballed for standing up to big studio hollywood-- I'd bet a goodly number of women not her would have been donezo"

Just wanted to quickly respond here as I fully agree. I think way too many shows produce X numbers of episodes why Y would have sufficed. Reduce shitty side character archs, reduce overall characters, stick to the main story and stop with the emotional baggage that doesn't drive plot as well as overly extensive back story not relevant to core characters. Also, way too much fucking exposition.

You end up with "Worms", when you just wanted to fly fish.

Gilroy showed how to do it with Andor season 2.  Thread that needle - leave people wanting a little more, but don't leave a lot of people going "I don't know if I can finish this".

She always deserved a good origin movie.  Just was in a weird time after her onscreen death.

I think they could have gotten juice out of 2 more episodes; definitely was not needing more than 8, period.

Completely agree, would have loved to see them release it at the chronologically appropriate time in the MCU, which I believe was in between Civil War and Infinity War.

Same but I don’t think Pugh gets cast in an MCU movie that releases between 2016 and 2018, meaning filmed in 2015/2016/2017.  Lady MacBeth in 2016 was her breakout role
