2021 European soccer megathread

The Super League is a uniquely American idea so if they're bashing America then that's fine. It's the further NFL-ization of European football where you can be as mediocre as ever as a big name club (Cowboys) and still get all the reward of having a big name (TV money). Glazer wants a system where he can just get piles of money regardless of how well United does each year and doesn't want a fluctuating system.

Boris Johnson: 'It is against the basic principals of competition'

At his 5pm press briefing Boris Johnson has just been asked if he really believes he can stop the the ESL from happening. Here is what he had to say:

Our first step is to clearly to back the football authorities in this country in the steps they’re taking. There is no doubt that we don’t support it. It is not in the interest of fans and football. How can it be right that you create a cartel where you stop clubs playing against each other. It is against the basic principals of competition. Wee will seek a legislative solution but we hope they can find a way forward themselves.

What would he say to the billionaire club owners?

Football was invented and codified in this country. These clubs came from famous towns and cities in our countries and it’s not right they should be dislocated from their home cities and turned into international brands to circulate the globe [to suit the banks].

The Guardian’s Jessica Elgot asks what is Boris Johnson’s own view on the German model of ownership (50+1) whioch gives fans a controlling stake in their clubs?

Johnson says it’s a matter for the minister for sport Tracey Crouch to address in her review and and he is of the opinion that she is impressed by those models.

Kill the indefensible and irrelevant Nations League and Club World Cup and place control of the CL and the distribution of its proceeds in the hands of the Big 5 leagues (not just a cadre of the super clubs) instead of UEFA bureaucrats.  UEFA and FIFA should manage their own legitimate international competitions (Euros and WC) but their oversight and control over club football should be greatly diminished.  Additional layers of bureaucratic middlemen increase inefficiency, waste and corruption, but that is the European way.

Agree with this as well as agreed financial/spending requirements and reporting with some actual teeth.

Germany went from a not-for-profit model in which all clubs were owned by members associations to a 50+1 model that permitted limited private investment and ownership.

England would be going the exact opposite direction from entirely private ownership to a 50.1% "fan" ownership. The Big 6 alone are collectively valued in excess of $20 billion.  The economic and legal implications of simultaneously requiring divestment of more than 50% ownership of all English clubs would be unworkable and in the long run Man United and Liverpool would be the greatest beneficiaries given that future spending would primarily depend on legitimate operating income.

Maybe don't let them buy the teams then. German teams don't have this shit.

I'm already an Everton casual fan and have a jersey in my closet. It, Bayern and the German national team are the only kits I own. Bought the German one in Berlin as well immediately after they won the World Cup. I can't believe that beloved Liverpool is owned by a fucking American. I haven't paid attention much to Premiere League other than random fixtures.
