Arkansas's 2nd place in the 4x400 is going to bump us to tied for 10th in the women's track meet.  I think USC finished ahead of aggy, so they'll be 2nd in the track meet.

We needed to finish 11th or better, and we finished tied for 10th. Skin of our teeth

Just about everything went wrong with DQs on both sides but it was going to take something really crazy because all the projections were assuming USC would win both titles. They were never beating Georgia on the womens side.

Going into final event, USC 2nd, Stanford 6th, UT tied for 9th.  Arkansas takes 2nd into 4x400 to knock UT to tie for 10th.

If I've done my math right, UT wins DC at 1255.25, USC at 1253.75, Stanford at 1251.   Let's see what DC Updates says though.

If Texas had just 1 less point, they would have dropped to a tie with Tech for 11/12th and would have finished behind USC for DC.  Kenondra Davis came through in 200m in 6th for 3 pts and that was the ultimate difference.  Whew!

My way-too-early prediction is that we win it again next year. Might not win the title in softball, but I think men's sports as a group will score more points. Only a year, or very nearly so, until we find out.

Stanford was still in it right up to the W5000m.  They got 6 pts for one runner finishing 3rd, but they had a second runner in the race (finished 17th).  If they had gotten 3 more points from those 2 runners, they would have finished in 4th in the team race and would have won the DC.  Crazy close.

I would expect football to meet or exceed their score, MBB and baseball will score more. Softball and WBB may score a little less. Volleyball likely a little more.

Let’s increase our points from both basketball programs, baseball, and football next season.  And volleyball I guess.

Football can’t improve that much, but men’s track, men’s baseball, and men’s basketball can certainly net us way more points next year.

And those bonus points in beach VB sure came in handy.

How are golf and tennis looking? I trust we'll stay strong in rowing and swimming/diving.

Still too early to know. Mens tennis could be good next year if Timo stays and doesn't go pro yet. Womens tennis is going in the wrong direction, but one or two blue chips can change that in a hurry.

Feel the wind in your face
It's more than a contest
It's more than a race
And when it's done
Win or lose
You always did your best
'Cause inside you knew
That one shining moment, you reached for the sky
One shining moment, you knew
One shining moment, you were willing to try
One shining moment, you knew
One shining moment

We play only 20 sports so winning for us is a big deal.

Need to edit this to include beach volleyball.  We have 21 sports now.

Beach volleyball was the reason we won this year, right?  Without it we have to take cross country and don’t win I think.

Just curious has our win been verified by a non-UT related source who independently did the score calculations?

I think he directors cup released the scores prior to the track championships. So they kind of independently verify but guess he could still be wrong based on the track scores.

His spreadsheet also shows Mens football netting us 85 points for 3rd place, but I'm wondering why its not 83 points like it is for WBB and Mens Tennis since all 3 teams lost in the semi-finals and had to split 3rd place points with the other semi final team. Rowing and womens swimming finished 3rd outright which is why they received the full 85. We won the directors cup by 1.5 points so thats a significant 2 points

It’s a non-bracket sport, technically. So 85 for 3rd, which was our finish in the final coaches poll

The following breakdown will be used:

  • 1st place - 1-25 using the final USA Today poll (comes out after the National Championship game), point breakdown is as follows: We will be using the 64-team non-bracket point system for the top-25 teams with 25th place receiving 49 points.
  • 26th place - Bowl game winners not ranked in poll (45 points)
  • Next Available Place - Bowl game losers not ranked in the poll (25 points)

Wow, so another break that went our way was the poll selection. AP had us 4th, while the Coaches poll had us 3rd. If they chose the AP poll to determine the points instead of the coaches poll, USC wins the directors cup.

Well the AP poll was bullshit; Texas should not have been behind Oregon unless you look only at record (13-1 vs 13-3) and not that Texas made the semifinals and Oregon was blown out in the quarterfinals.

I always have issues with end of season polls where you finish ranked higher/lower than your actual finish - end of regular season polls are a reflection of the whole season, but end of postseason polls should be a reflection of postseason results.  You make the CFP semifinals, you finish top 4 in the rankings.  You make OKC or Omaha, you finish top 8 in the final rankings.

I still think we should look at upgrading the track coach, with all the talent in Texas for track there is no excuse.

He’s got a very good track record and won the women’s title here just a year or two ago. It’s a down cycle- they happen.

Seems to me he is a better women's coach than men's in the sport and it seems to me we are an outlier for the sport as a whole rather than a competitor.

Men Indoor 2022 and Women Outdoor 2023

He was hired after the 2018 season. Men and women compete 2 times each (indoor/outdoor) per year, so 2 titles in 12 NCAA championship competitions (no 2020 championships).

Floreal has our only men's indoor title in history and we've never won an outdoor title
Floreal has 1 of our 5 women's outdoor titles in history.  He's slacking on the indoor - Texas has 6, but none since 2006.

Bev had 6 titles in 20 years, just coaching the women.  Floreal has 2 in 6 actual seasons of competition.

It’s wild that Coach Flo is the head coach of Track and Field + Cross Country, but that means he’s directly responsible for 6 of our possible 21 NCAA team national championships every year.

Men’s XC
Women’s XC
Men’s indoor track
Women’s indoor track
Men’s outdoor track
Women’s outdoor track

Coach Flo is the head coach of all the above making him the most important coach in UT athletics from a Directors Cup perspective. Would it be worth exploring getting a different coach for the men’s team and letting Flo focus on the women? Maybe bring in a dedicated coach for XC?

Looking at this stuff some more, 6 coaches, 1 staff

image.png.ebda8441d928afe20ddf3e3231c1ad3c.png

Florida - 8 coaches, 2 support staff
Arkansas - 6 men's coaches, 5 women's coaches, 13 support staff
Oregon - 9 coaches, 9 support staff
Texas A&M - 8 coaches, 4 support staff
Georgia - 10 coaches, 7 support staff
USC - 8 coaches, 2 support staff

Seems like we are incredibly thin in terms of staff and support vs the top programs.

Time to poke some fun at the Aggies.  Since 2021, they have finished 18th, 25th, 24th, and 6th.  This year they will finish around 10th.  With all of their resources, they are definitely under performing.

The women are going to be in contention for a championship next year with Ndubuisi and Garrett returning. 1 more good sprinter that can score points in a couple of events from the transfer portal or recruiting class likely puts them right in contention.

Arkansas is two different coaches

One of CDC’s first things was to consolidate the T&F programs under one coach
