I would guess a disturbingly large number of suicides are rash decisions made under the influence of your choice of drugs/drinks. Having some mild depression you can deal with in your normal day-to-day may hit you like a ton of bricks if you are hoovering booger sugar and chasing it with White Claws.

That would be really sad, if it happened that way. I've always hated how much people misunderstand the way suicides work. The narratives about the victim having a lot of friends or a lot to live for or immediate plans to look forward to, all of that implies that the only people who commit suicide are loners and losers. That's pretty insulting, frankly, and it doesn't help anyone.

This story is blowing up everywhere, so now that APD's under the microscope I think we will see a more thorough investigation.

It might have been as benign as her sitting in an unsafe position on/near the railing, someone goofing off giving her a playful shove, and over she goes.  Then everyone panics about an accidental homicide, etc.

Lots of possible scenarios.  The two that seem the weirdest are (1) a malevolent murder, someone actually tosses her over the side saying "die bitch!", and (2) a purposeful "goodbye cruel world" suicide plunge with 15 people present.  Seems like it is likely some scenario in between.

Not sure if this is legit but stumbled across this on Reddit. Is that really "impossible" to trip and fall over the railing? In this photo it looks to be about to their mid-rib area. The balcony here looks from the inside like what the balcony looks like from the outside based on Google Street view. The lack of UT or downtown in the background suggests the balcony is facing the west. The victim probably was not very tall, so an accident is harder to believe based on this.

From how I read it, the fight happened earlier and the mom was trying to connect the earlier fight to the death because they were both at the same party. Also doesn't say if it was a physical fight or just bitching at each other.

This would be a very empty message board if that was the case.

It wouldn't surprise me, but at the same time, how the fuck could detectives just accept a bunch of potential co-conspirators' stories at face value without some kind of independent proof that no foul play was involved? There's more on reddit:

If any of this is true that's some incredibly shoddy police work and they have every right to be incensed

I don't know what happened. Easily could have been an accident but could just as easily be suicide. I had a client that killed himself. Suicide pact with his girlfriend. They left notes for every member of their respective families. Family agreed notes were in their handwriting. Very explicit and detailed as to why they came to this decision.  After being confronted with this evidence his bother and father concluded that client  was going to expose a child sex trafficking ring, so the cartels broke into his house, forced them to write the notes and then staged a dual hanging.  There was no way to divest them of that belief. If you don't want to believe your loved one killed themselves, there is no amount of evidence that will convince you. As someone who's known3 people that have taken their own life, I would never in a million years expected that any of them would have even considered it. Happy Facebook post with kids, spouse  or girlfriend on Monday and dead by their own hand on Tuesday.

I know that sort of thing happens. Sorry for your loss.

Nobody in this story has resorted to child sex trafficking, cartel conspiracy theories just yet. I don't think a drunk scuffle is totally out of the question, if there was some actual beef simmering among this friend group.

I agree, but do you believe that two women having an argument and one throwing the other 17 floors to their death is more plausible than suicide or accident? I think the idea that coming to Austin for the Texas game and then killing yourself at an after party seems completely bonkers but people do fucked up shit.

I thought accident was most likely until I saw how hard it would be to "accidentally" fall over the railings. The only way it could be an accident is if they were doing something incredibly dumb like trying to take a selfie while dangling their centers of gravity over the edge.

Sprinkle in underage drinking and drug possession and we have a West Campus coverup. She may have fell on her own. Thats just another weekend for the Texas Cowboys.

I think suicide is unlikely, at least without significant drugs and alcohol in her system.

Other than the family member mentioning it in the post, where does it say she went off the balcony?  The APD says she was “found unresponsive”. Isn’t that usually language for an OD or alcohol poisoning or the like?  A 17 story fall seems like “found unresponsive” is odd language.

thank you, this was bugging the hell out of me!

i've unfortunately seen a body that fell just SIX stories - it was gory and frankly traumatizing, a picture i couldn't unsee for literally years. a 17 story fall, the body is going to be a lot more than 'unresponsive', like wtf people!

sadly many local news outfits are nothing more than stenographers for cops, so if the police spokesperson used that copspeak it will be regurgitated in the news story.

Just out of curiosity, when is the appropriate time to commit suicide?  Is there an understood time and place to schedule these things?  I feel like most people committing suicide are really taking into account others' feelings, especially friends and family, so I think we should absolutely come up with a standard here.

In the early days of the interwebs, i remember seeing a photo of a guy who had jumped out a window in a business suit. His body literally exploded when it hit the concrete. His suit was in tatters like he was hit by a grenade.

Not sure where I land with this.   Another girl being strong enough to throw her over?  Not likely.   Suicide doesn’t seem right either.   Just drunken stupidity?   She’s not exactly a big girl I’m guessing all day drinking, she’s back with her hs friends from Laredo, tmhe cool kids smart or wealthy enough to attend Texas or aggy

I know the source below is People but I doubt rhe Buzbee lawsuit will lead anywhere. I cannot imagine the heartbreak the mother is going through losing her child.  I hope those who feel triggered will avail themselves of the resources listed in the article below if they need to talk.

it is an extraordinary step for police to hold a press conference on a suicide but they felt compelled bc those who attended the party are being attacked along with their families and obviously people been saying the police didn’t do their job.

the article also mentions a deleted digital suicide note and that she had talked about suicide with friends as early as October of this year.

“Video surveillance obtained by the police department showed a "large gathering" at the apartment on the 17th floor, but that most of the people had exited the unit, leaving behind Brianna and THREE other girls.

Brianna was on the phone with her boyfriend, two minutes before she fell from the balcony, police said.”

"Witnesses heard Brianna arguing on the phone with her boyfriend, which was also confirmed later by the boyfriend. phones from both the phone Brianna used and the boyfriend's phone have confirmed through call logs that that call did occur," Marshall said. "Now, this call occurred at approximately 12:43 to 12:44 a.m., [for] approximately one minute. This is two minutes before the 911 call of the body found down below on the pavement."

What's the thing about the phone being found by a creek. How could she have her phone two minutes before jumping and then it ends up by a creek?

Ugh. Over a boyfriend. Hormones are a bitch when you're young, and the lack of them is a bitch when you're old.  Mother nature sucks sometimes.

Yep, and love is blind, but she was a good looking , presumably smart girl.  The world was hers, other fish in the sea, yada, yada.

She used a friend's phone.  I fully expect Buzbee and the family to sue the people who put on the tailgate for making her get drunk and the apartment for building the dangerous balcony.  Hell, the gofundme was set up while her body was still warm.  Sad story, but the family needs to quiet down.

So she had lost her own phone that day. What's weird to me is it seems like her parents could ping the phone and saw it was left near a creek, so you'd think that a 19 year old would be able to locate her own phone and would be highly motivated to get it back, instead of doing whatever the hell else she was doing that evening.

did you miss the part where she was completely intoxicated, was kicked out of the tailgate, dropped her phone several times, was stumbling, and wandered into the woods?

And turn a terrible situation into something it should never be. A circus. The police released just enough to explain why they have ruled it a suicide. Buzzbee loves to drag his opponents thru the mud. Everything about her last several months and what was going oN with her will be laid bare. Everything.

All this will do is drag the girl thru the mud. I also get many loved ones who have had someone close commit suicide are in denial. And also sometimes it’s for religious reasons too. I went thru similar when my relative took his own life nearly four years ago.

My relative’s minister stood up in front of the congregation and said “we all know he took his life. But let me tell you this. (Holds up Bible) there is nothing in this book that says suicides go to hell. So y’all can stop gossiping about it now.” Kind of thing and it was awesome to hear that.

I don't blame the mom. She lost a daughter and wants someone to blame. She was happy and had X, Y, Z to look forward to. No way her daughter would take her own life.

Except she did. My daughters, their friends, and the victims' parents all thought the same thing. No way he/she would do it. One jumped off a building. Another hung herself. And another shot himself in the head.

Depression doesn't look like what many people think it does. I think most of us know of or have known people who have committed suicide and/or dealt/dealing with severe depression.

Lastly, if you read /r/Austin, every once in a awhile you'll see posts about ambulances and deaths around West Campus. There won't be any news of it. That's usually because it's a suicide. UTexas doesn't report or inform of it. The news usually doesn't report on it.
