If it's a joke, it sure isn't much of one.

The list of the hottest coaches today and coaches actually approached for jobs like Michigan and Penn State somehow didn't include genius and master strategist/motivator Steve Sarkesian.

Louisville’s Jeff Brohm
Oregon's Dan Lanning
Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham (locked up with new contract)
Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz
Washington’s Jedd Fisch
Alabama's Kalen Deboer
Indiana's Curt Cignetti (locked up with new contract)
Hell, even His Royal Whaleness, the Duke of Elko, appeared on wish lists for Michigan.

Apparently, not everyone in college football shares the opinion that Sarkesian is an ace-in-the-hole, cracker jack coach.

W-Why would he step DOWN from Texas to go to another program?

This isn’t Oregon. Or even Aggy. Where Penn St may be equal or Michigan a better job.

Texas is one of the top 3-5 jobs in college. And a lot say the top spot.

Like how is this a serious post? Of course no one came to him. He’d never leave for another college job. Wow what a dumb take.

Oregon is an incredible job. Yet writers said, 'pay Dan Lanning whatever it takes' to make him take the Michigan job. Nobody wrote that about Sark.

So is Alabama, which is arguably a better job than Texas.
Yet Kalen Deboer had to make a public statement to get people to back off. Sark didn't have to make a statement because, well, there was no attempt to get him.

My point is that Sark never gets in any lists for hottest coach. None.

I think Sark is, at best, a mid-level coach who will produce mid-level results. Yet some of you seem perfectly fine with that.

I’m on your side of the conversation regarding Sark. But bama is not a better job than Texas. We could buy that school and call it UTT

Pretty sure that was a "threat" from Sark to get the donors off his back about playcalling. He didnt want to give it up so he leaked to the NFL that he will leave.

They have been able to produce winners in football and basketball that greatly exceed anything we have done over the last 16 years. Perhaps they have better organization and cohesion on the highest levels that allows them to choose and support great coaches. Between Strong, Herman, Smart and Beard, we have been a mess, and that's being charitable. Currently, I would argue that it's a better job than UT.

Bama is a better football job because they have a good basketball team. Solid work.

Oates was the right coach for the moment for Bama.

That was Beard for us but he, not us, blew it up. Vic took a floundering program for a decade and a half into a perennial contender.

The right coach will come along. But Sark’s success (or failures) mean nothing for our basketball program.

Using the proof point that we won a meaningless exhibition game played by mostly scrubs while the 12-team playoffs are going on is quite a flex.

Yes, the Beard situation is unique for us, because he was a clearly a great coach, and he screwed it up. He doesn't belong in a list of mediocrity alongside Terry, Smart, Strong and Herman who all sucked beyond all comprehension.

Sark is better than those losers. But I don't see him winning a championship for Texas, and since that should be always the goal.

I guess it does need to be spelled out for you.

Oregon is indeed a great job, but is not considered a blue blood/prestigious program by the media. They are idiots. They don't understand the resources and advantages he has in Eugene. Anyone seriously mentioning Lanning to Michigan seriously doesn't understand CFB anymore.

There have been rumors and angst about DeBoer since literally Week 1 this year. Bama fans wanted him gone after FSU loss, way more so than the bitching from a dozen people on Surly about Sark. Personality wise, he is not an ideal fit at Alabama. If they would have lost to OU in 1st round of playoffs, it's possible Bama would have helped him pack for Ann Arbor.

It seems you have a rudimentary understanding of the college football landscape, maybe a good idea to just let this go.

I wouldn't say Alabama is a better job than Texas, but it's at least in the discussion.

And maybe I'm taking crazy pills, but wasn't Sark on the short list as a successor to Saban less than 2 years ago? And that was before Sark had his 2nd playoff appearance and almost made the playoffs this year. I'm sure part of that was leveraging the media to lock in more $, but all these guys play that game. Putting Sark's name out for any of the HC openings this year would have been silly. I guess Michigan could be seen as a somewhat lateral move, but who in their right mind would think Sark would leave Texas for Michigan when he's got things rolling here?

Stupid fans will be stupid fans. I'm sure a good portion of the OSU fans want Ryan Day's head this morning just like they wanted him fired last year after he lost to a crappy Michigan team (you know, right before they won the NC). And people will want Sark fired any year he doesn't win the NC. Par for the course at any top tier program, grass is always greener until you actually take a close look at someone else's grass. Doesn't make it less stupid, just the way it is.

I don't know if Sark is the guy to bring the next NC to Texas or not, but I'm not sure there is another coach I'd swap for right now. The guy had us within one play of making the NC game each of the last 2 years and almost had us in the playoffs this year. That's a long way from walking through the desert with Herman, Strong, Mackovic, and McWilliams.

Ah yes, that little known “highest revenue program gets to subtract 1 loss” criteria from the committee

A lot of yall seem to be much easier to please than me. This season was a massive disappointment and a gross waste of money and resources in my book. We simply werent ready to go when the season started and by the time Sark got things under control it was too late. Years of work went into getting us into a position to compete for championships and in this era that extends well outside the locker room. I like a lot of the things Sark has done, but this season turned me against him. He fucked around and it caused us to miss a playoff we absolutely should be in. For everything he is being given, this season wasn't nearly good enough.

For me it comes down to NIL payroll. We should not be sitting at home right now based on the level of investment. Sark was given all the money he needed. His OL way underperformed. His RBs and WRs underperformed. Statistically, his offense was not nearly good enough, and thats supposed to be his specialty. He shit the bed this season and I dont think theres a good excuse for it.

In my opinion Sark went wrong in two areas. First, PK has largely been a disappointment. His defenses were somewhat solid but just not quite good enough to get over the hump. What I mean is that everytime we got into a high level game his defense was the lesser of the two. Last year both times vs Georgia and against Ohio State the opposition's defense played better. Same goes for OU and Washington in 23.

Secondly, our interior O-line has been an issue since he got here. He just never fixed it. It started because Bijan and Roschon covered it up, then to a large extent so did Brooks. He just never tried to upgrade from Majors, Conner, and Hutson.

Sure, he fucked up. I don’t think anyone disputes that. So you retool and try again. You change out staff and try to bring in new players. You don’t fire the head coach or push him out when he’s been fairly successful. Maybe he doesn’t get us there but you give him more chances before you willingly detonate the program again. Cignettis and Smarts don’t grow on trees.

You also maybe understand that all of this is out of our control

you-got-me-walter-white.gif

Incredible argumentative skills, TO.

Sometimes things don't work out. People fuck up and make mistakes. That's what happened this year.

I've been plenty critical of Sark through the years, particularly his struggles on game day. This past offseason was his first with mismanaging the roster IMO, by not addressing OL and RB rooms. You can't really fix it in the middle of the season. Even though CFB has turned into a professional sport now, you can't make trades or FA pickups during the season. Overall, this season was a failure. We did not reach our goals. We looked like hammered dogshit on offense for way too long. That said, we pretty much maximized what this 2025 team could be by the end of the season.

I'm surprised to say this, but for me the Michigan win might have been the most satisfying game of the year . For all the understandable arrogance talk surrounding Texas Football, this team showed a lot of moxie with a gutted roster and not much to play for. While ND took their ball and went home, we played our asses off vs. an energized and chippy Michigan team. That was probably the most physical game we played in this year. Common sense would tell you that's a sign of a healthy locker room and group of players that like/respect Sark.

And look, man...we have Arch Manning. The kid is a fucking warrior and will go down as one of the best and most likable to ever wear the Burnt Orange. A truly generational player that will pay off for the program for years to come. And Sark is the main reason he's here. Take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

Now it's time for Sark to right his wrongs from 2025. Hit the portal hard and fix the offense. He said the Muschamp hire frees him up, let's get it done.

Some of you guys would’ve called for DKR’s firing after the ‘61 season.

portal and nil have nuked the blue blood concept in college football. stacking blue blood recruits.

sark needs a much better portal class in 2026. his 2025 portal class was a fail

Agree that Kirby is king right now, but I'm still not sure I'd swap him for Sark. He's totally owned Sark and totally outcoached him in the game this year, but that doesn't mean he'd be more successful at Texas than Sark going forward. Kirby isn't leaving Georgia anyway, so kind of pointless. And you don't see Kirby mentioned for new coaching opportunities either, so I'm not sure that's a great measure of whether a coach is good or bad.

And I think Day, Freeman, and Lanning would be the next best choice/tier of coaches (I'd put Sark in that same group). So, you could divorce Sark and bring in another option for the sake of trying something shiny and new, but I'm not sure any of them are an upgrade. I guess we'd get a nice honeymoon period where everything is awesome before actually playing football, but at some point you are just swapping out the things/people to complain about. At some point, you have to move on if you aren't seeing the results/progress you want, but this past season doesn't get me near that point. A change now would be just as likely to take as backwards as forwards IMO.

And yet, Ohio State, OU, Alabama, Georgia were all in the playoff. Two of those got bye weeks. If I can find it I’ll post the chart of how most playoff teams weren’t built with the portal. Unless I read it wrong. Recruiting still matters.

He had the team looking really locked in to finish. I think he's a good coach. I just dont trust him anymore. Im not asking for him to be perfect. I think its pretty reasonable to ask that the head coach is laser focused on doing everything he can to prepare for the season. Sark just didnt do that this year and it cost us. I think thats totally unaccepable. I would feel that way if we won the national championship in 2024. I felt that way about late stage Mack. Maybe my expectations are too high but it doesnt feel like it.

It looks to me like he has things back on track. Im excited about Muschamp and I think thats a great move from Sark. Arch is rolling. We are gonna have an exciting portal window. I think we are gonna have a big campaign next year. I just think we shouldve had one this year too.

it definitely matters. nil / portal is an equalizer but very costly. the concept of your entire team being free agents every season is pure madness, cats and dogs living together.

when i think of those 4 programs, dominate OL's come to mind. big and nasty OL's

when you have all the resources, having a group that 'lacks' is a huge fail. they had 3 year to prepare for Arch year 1. recruiting and portal fail

After the Kentucky debacle and being down 3 scores vs. Miss State in the second half, could we have realistically imagined a better finish and final result for this season?

If the players would have checked out back in Starkville, then yeah, Sark ain't it. This particular team faced a SHIT TON of adversity this season, and came out the other side with legit reasons to believe we can win it all in 2026, pending good portal additions and staff improvements.

What will the haters say if we win a National Championship next year? I don’t give a shit who the coach is as long as we win. Mistakes were made this season but to want to fire a coach after a down year of three losses and finishing ranked top 10 possibly is crazy. The list of active coaches that don’t have that level of a down year occasionally is how long, 2-3 names? The list of replacements that would be close to guaranteed success is how long? How about we see what happens the next couple years before we bet on a smooth, no drop off coaching change.

It's a new era and judging by old standards is likely foolish. Insane levels of roster turnover have injected chaos and luck into the equation.

I don't care about revenue sharing or NIL, but they need to fix the portal. Multi-year contracts would help.

I don’t trust him either. I sense that he’s finally getting it as I think he’s reasonably intelligent. But his offense has underproduced and his goto is to fire PK? I think one can question his integrity on that. Some humility. There’s also the whole sue usc because I’m a n alcoholic thing.

All that being said, he’s making changes quick so maybe he takes us to the promised land soon.
