Job hunting - A different kind of happy ending

Macanudo

Recommended Posts

Have I said that this whole process freaking sucks?    I took a break from applying for the last 6 weeks.

I did have an interview in December then a 2nd interview later in the month with a company here in Houston.   Found out today that I'm not their guy.   Trying to stay positive and look at this pragmatically.  I still have my current job and will until at least the end of April with the chance that there is an extension until late summer.   That doesn't change a whole lot financially vis a vis my severance but I still have a paycheck.

But this freaking sucks.

In all fairness, you may need to consider a relocation.  Most gay porn is produced in the Los Angeles area.

might be looking at a gap in health insurance if i can't get the new place to start me a week earlier.  is going obamacare marketplace for a month the thing to do?  seems like it should be a lot cheaper than cobra

Part of the reason I went to the place I’m at now was I needed immediate, good insurance (I was a contractor for them on a short project at the time).  They made it available day 1 instead of 30 days or whatever.   If you’re in position, make that one of your requests.

it's first day of the month after hire.  i'm covered at the old place through the end of the month so if they'll take me on in a week and a half instead of 2 and a half i think i'm good.

Look into short term insurance, it’s actually not too crazy assuming no ‘priors’ on your record.

I'm self-employed, and I use "Obamacare" with great satisfaction.  I'm pushing 60 (57), in good health, and I'm paying just over $600/mo for Kaiser HMO with a $7,000 annual deductible and a $30 co-pay on office visits.

Woohoo!  Got my 100 rejection today!

At this point it's just comical.

I'm also job hunting / out of a job. Before Christmas a vp of sales contacts me and tells me that 2 diff people told him he'd be an idiot not to hire me. He told me, 'I need to wait until after Jan 1, because we're switching insurance carriers. It doesn't make sense to hire you, then switch you over'. Me - no problem, I'm ready to start in Jan.

that sob has 100% ghosted me since Jan 1

Which means you’re about 300 behind me.  I did finally have a few offers but there were some horrible moments.  In tech, quite a few 6 interviews and free consulting errrr I mean demo     Fuck some these people

good luck to all

The HMO’s in Texas ObamaCare have terrible doctor networks. If you have health issues, I’d stay on Cobra as long as you can, unless the delta price is too much to bear.

Also, I have an offer for the unemployed or about to be unemployed with technical software development skillz.

The economy is moving into a recession which is the best possible time to start a company. If anyone has a customer need driven idea/opportunity that they want to pursue, I’ll look at it, and if it looks promising enough I’ll provide angel funding and management coaching, including bringing in other investors if needed.

I just finished a consulting gig and have time and interest in working on it. What always happens going into a recession is that companies stop or drop new product programs and the team is left hanging with a customer need but no product to satisfy that need.

It’s a rock album for potty training with covers of stuff like “Potty and Bullshit”, “Potty in the USA”, “Fight for you Right to Potty”, etc . I’m hoping to get Andrew WK on board.

Other one - childrens line of clothing called Lil Bean. Challenge (opportunity?) - really need to target a deal with LL Bean.

I've been catching up on this tread this afternoon. Been on this board a long time as a lurker, but only have a handful of posts. Anyway, I am in a similar situation. I was part of the great resignation, so after 16 years in marketing financial services, I left last year. New CEO was brining in his own people and the writing was on the wall.

I have a pretty good work history and never been fired, hit my goals, team player, etc, so I didn't think I would be out of work a long time. I did take some time off and traveled a bit, but then hit the ground running January of last year to find my next adventure. I'm still looking.

I sympathize with Macanudo and others going through this because it's tough. Some days it's a kick in the nuts. Went through a six month interview process to finally hear no. Thought I matched up well for the job, too, which is why I pushed off some other interested companies.

I've had several interviews, final panels, but no offer...yet. It's coming I know, but frustration can run high and the process can be very slow. Hang in there. You'll soon forget all the rejections and you'll celebrating a Yes offer soon.

Yep.  It was four months for me and each rejection added another layer of doubt. A couple of the interviews I just wasn’t locked in enough.   A few of the others I was final two etc.  ended up with quite a few offers but took 4 months

FWIW, my wife went through something fairly similar not too long ago. 15 years post college and had never spent a day unemployed in her adult life. Company she'd been with for over a decade sold all off their assets and closed up shop in late 2020. We figured she'd be able to enjoy ~6 months of free time (got a healthy severance) and then find a job nearly instantaneously with her resume. Took over 6 months after she started in earnest to finally land something. Made it to a 3rd or 4th round at least half a dozen times. A handful of companies just straight up ghosted her deep into the interview process. Overqualified/too expensive/unlikely to stay for long is the best we could figure. Funny enough, I think tomorrow will be her 1-year anniversary in her new role.

It sucks, and each successive rejection seems to compound on the ones that came before, but you seem to have your head in the right place. Good luck man.

Back when National Lampoon was in it's prime; they had an insert; The "LL Beaner" catalog.   It was all switchblades, wifebeaters, flannel shirts, pressed khakis, chain steering wheels for your lowrider, etc.

Yep.  And I had to do a demo for a few of them. Didn’t land the jobs and soem of them even asked for my deck. Free consulting at its finest.  Basically employers getting revenge.  But I landed in a great place that I love to sell for

also if it took someone with your wife’s resume 6 months the. I don’t feel bad at all.

I wonder how much of that was getting into the rhythm of interviewing and selling herself again, considering she'd been way out of practice. In my experience it takes a few interviews to get back into a groove and the first few are really choppy. But once you have your talk track down and your assets codified and you can speak to this, that and the other in a confident way because you've done it a half dozen times, you naturally come off as competent and valuable. I've actually heard of folks taking a job interview cycle they don't particularly want when they first start looking, just to knock the rust off for the next job that you do really want.

I have definitely taken a job interview with a company I have no intention of working for.

Yep, I've gotten too experience, not experienced enough, missed on one question, etc.  With HR lawsuits I guess companies have to be careful with feedback.

I don't mind the assessments as they're usually IQ tests I think.  But it's the "pitch me my product or let me see your 30/60/90" or demo this stuff that requires prep.

Do you mind clarifying the assessments?  I had to do that once. Got a perfect score on one, a great score on second, and absolutely bombed the third.  Thought there’s no way I was going to get the job, but got it. Left a few years (5) later due to no advancement model, and learned later everyone who got perfect/near perfect were on their advancement list from day 1.  The rest of us were just cogs, no matter our performance. Good riddance.

Mine was contracts, simple math (typically project/contract related with net negotiations, light amortization, and currency exchange) and then the patterns.  Those fucking patterns.  Im not sure I got a single one correct.  I had a friend who’s considerably smarter than me try to teach it to me (they sent me a practice exam) and I finally got ahold of it, then the test was 2x harder than the hardest practice question. I got the job, made them a ton of money, and then realized it was a fuck situation and bolted.  Probably installed alot of the equipment you sold.

I applied to a place the Friday before Thanksgiving, and they immediately responded (evening) asking me to schedule a meeting on their calendar which only extended into the next week. Which was Thanksgiving. I told them I was traveling out of state with little kids and could try and find a block but the next week would be better, they responded on Monday saying no problem, but then never responded again when I asked for a new calendar link that had options for the following week. No big deal because… it was mostly a whim and it was probably not a good fit, but I’m not sure if they’re chaotic or if they felt that not interviewing while on family vacation was a red flag. Lol.

Probably more to do with 200,000 really talented, impressive resume'd folks are on the street right now who are hungry and desperate and the competition is as fierce as it has been in a long time.

I do wonder if the inflated salaries, perks and equity days are over for a long while or if this is just a blip. I can't imagine being able to get to an offer stage and being able to materially negotiate as a lot of people will take offers as is to get insurance, pay bills, etc.

Great start to the year, 0-4

1 good company, they need someone to cover Mexico and Central America, cold calling. Their job ad mentioned zero of this, horrible use of resources

2 small, small place. They literally only deal with one small group of parts. They have me jumping through hoops for a shit job, with shit pay. 100% cold calling. They want 2023 results when 2023 budget and work has already been handed out. They have zero status with my customer base

3 soft ghosted, texted them this evening after them telling me Monday they want to bring me in to talk

4 hard core ghosted. I wish that guy and company nothing but ill will, plagues and harm for generations. Fuck them royally

I’m no lawyer but I’m pretty sure you can apply for cobra after the fact. In other words go without insurance for the month and if something major happens before your new policy starts pay for cobra then. I’ve done that in the past for 90 days, didn’t need it so never paid. If something minor comes up paying cash will probably be cheaper than a month of cobra premium

*edit looks like it’s 60 days so I went another month rolling the dice. Was pre-kids though

Been following this thread and I feel for everyone going through the process.

And yes, its fucking ridiculous.  Job after job that I apply for that I'm 100% qualified for end up not even getting a sniff at.

The auto-reject emails are comical at this point.

Most recently went through 2 interviews with a company...went well, I thought.  2 emails (1 "thank you" email and 1 "update") following up with them have gone un-answered.  Just ghosted.

Like wtf?

I was with a co for 19 years until 2021  and have bounced between doing some contract work and working for 6 months for a company that had to furlough me because they were running out of start up $

Anyone looking to hire sales/biz dev/account management folks in Houston?  Hit me up!!

:)

Tips on shopping for / getting insurance in Houston ?

If you are single and relatively healthy you should look at a cost sharing organization. Not technically insurance, but I have not heard of any going insolvent even after covid

They do carve out some pre-existing conditions, but if you are on a generic bp med or cholesterol or something like that you can get really good discounts at CVS. They check good rx and a few others. I’ve had generics that were cheaper to pay cash than my copay w insurance.

I was in sales/account management for a pro sports team, but my skills are transferable to any industry. :)

I'm mainly looking into O&G in some capacity, Commercial RE, and IT/SaaS/Tech...potentially Insurance as well, although I'm not currently licensed.

  • 3 weeks later...

Pushed past 150 jobs applied for earlier this week.   My RIF date has been extended from 4/28 to 9/15 but I still haven't gotten that in writting.   It is my understanding that doing that requires 60 days notice so my employer is running out of time to satisfy the law on that.  Not sure what kind of recourse an employee has if they don't meet that requirement.

Had a HR phone interview with a company here in Houston that is outside my industry but in scope with my skills.   Have another one of those with another company in March but they pay 15-20% less than I make now.   My severance isn't a life atlering amount of money but it seems silly to leave 24 weeks of salary plus other incentives on the table for a pay cut.

in conclusion, this fucking sucks.

onward through the fog, buddy. it'll happen.

as a refresh - you've been in retirement services, leading a training team? Not my field at all so I'm trying to imagine what that is - if my company had some 401k informational thing offered by Fidelity or whoever, it would be someone on your team who would be leading that, and you would be managing those people and involved in directing what kind of programs and training are offered to clients like CeleryTech?
