We really enjoyed the Monday Jack White show. We were 10 feet from the stage so maybe that helped with the vibe. My favorite show was his Austin Music Hall performance maybe a decade ago.

I was on other side, Section 103, Row F.

Great show. I think I’ve seen Wilco several times on a Wednesday and “Wilco Wednesday” comes up every time. Waxahatchee was terrific. I like Katie’s voice better in person — it seems less “scratchy”??? We caught their set at High Water, which was fun. This was a better representation of them as a performing band but that venue was understandably cooler.

Looks like we're probably headed to Atlanta in September for the Shaky Knees festival.  I see The Pixies are playing on Friday -- anyone know if that's the original band lineup?

They haven't had the original band line up in years, as Kim is apparently just too difficult to work with.  So they've had a revolving cast of female bassists.  I thought the version with Paz Lenchantin was the best, but she just left.

But don't let any of that dissuade you.  I saw them last summer and they are playing as well as they've ever played.  Granted, I'm a die hard Pixies fan, but they bring all that late 80s/early 90s angst right here to 2025.  See them and let me know what you think.

By the way, I just did the math, and I've seen Wilco 17 times over the years.  I think that's the most I've seen any act.  I think Willie may be up there in that range though.  I'll save that math for another day.

But he writes the songs (except for Gigantic which is a great fucking song)?

Yeah, as Chad says, no Kim. I don't think I've seen them post-Kim but I might have. I've seen them a ton.

Yeah, I get it.  Don't pay any attention to me, I'm just not a big Pixies fan but I'd like to see them again.  His voice annoys me.  Kim's voice intrigues me.

Csb daughter of one of my fraternity brothers manages Katie’s merchandise on tour. Didn’t learn of this until last night so wasn’t able to see her. Had hoped it might get me backstage. Alas.

Jack White tonight at Mission Ballroom. that is hands down my absolute favorite concert venue of anywhere. i don't wear a watch and i didn't count songs but i counted guitar changes - i think it was 10.

Steady As She Goes to lead off the encore was a friggin moment, and i'm not sure a better finale song exists than SNA.

i thought it was better than the Moody 3 years ago... might be the best show I've seen since Tool in San Antonio just before Covid.

he has so little banter yet effortlessly keeps the audience in his hands...he makes those guitars talk to you!

Yeah, he won me over at Mohawk a few months ago.  I got to watch him from stage right, about 3 feet behind the drummer in your photos.  To say his band is smokin' hot would be an understatement.  They're a far cry from The White Stripes.

No doubt.  This band is hitting on all cylinders.  They're the kind of band I'd like to see at an after hours gig when they're cutting loose playing for each other rather than for a paying crowd.

they're the ween of post-punk, satirical songs that are actually good. they incorporate jazz, country, electronic, psych. they definitely don't take themselves seriously.

I found them while listening to "Amyl and the Sniffers Radio" (you know how Spotify has "radio stations" if you like a particular band.  Anyway, I thought they were pretty good.

@jimmyjazz Check out Lambrini Girls... songs like "Love" or "Big Dick Energy".   The whole Who Let The Dogs out album is something.

I was completely unaware of the connection to Galaxie 500 until Luna rolled across Spotify for me 5-6 (or more years ago) and I went to look them up. 23 Minutes in Brussels, Malibu Love Nest and California (All the Way) are fucking jams.

I caught The Damned last night at Radio East.  It was about as punk rock as the Austin High marching band.  Really weird show.  Not bad, but very mid-energy, clean, "pro".  I really liked the opener "TV Smith and the Adverts".  Apparently they had a hit in the real punk rock era, but I had never heard of them.

By the way, Radio East is huge.  Like, bigger than Stubb's.

We got back from Kilby later than expected last night. Saw some good stuff Thursday-Saturday. The highlight of the festival was New Order, who closed Thursday night. (Kilby is normally a Friday-Sunday affair but the only night New Order could play was Thursday so they added an extra day!) What a show. The gang led off with two or three Joy Division songs, including "Transmission" to start it all off. Then they busted into my favorite album (Power, Corruption & Lies) for "Age of Consent" and "Your Silent Face." I'm no a huge Killers fan but Brandon Flowers (lead singer) joined NO onstage for "Bizarre Love Triangle." (Apparently, Flowers lives in Park City and idolizes NO.)

We saw parts or all of sets for:

  • Yo La Tengo
  • Future Islands
  • Devo
  • New Order
  • Perfume Genius
  • Momma
  • Built to Spill
  • Car Seat Headrest
  • Vacations
  • Slowdive
  • Youth Lagoon
  • Rilo Kiley
  • Beach House
  • Jelani Aryeh
  • SASAMI
  • Toro y Moi
  • St. Vincent
  • Weezer

I think our favorite sets were New Order, Perfume Genius, Rilo Kiley, Beach House and St. Vincent. I'm head-over-heels in love with Annie Clark (too bad she plays shortstop for the other team). Jenny Lewis is another hall pass for me.

I was in Cali for the weekend to see the Cruel World Festival in Pasadena.

poster-key-art-2025-final.jpg

Rolled in just as She Past Away was finishing their set - which sounded really good.

Next up was Nation of Language.  This is one of my gf's favorite bands and they didn't disappoint.

They sounded great and the very attractive keyboard player was wearing a see through skirt - which absolutely made the keys sound better.  It's science.

She Wants Revenge killed it and their new music sounded great - heavier guitar work than their previous stuff.  Should be coming out later this year.  First album in 13 years.

As they were finishing up their set I could hear the intro to Stranger by Clan of Xymox starting on the next stage so we hauled ass over.  I wanted to hear 3 songs from Xymox and they played all of them.  Stranger, Louise, and A Day.

It started raining while we were watching Alison Moyet so we headed towards the Wax Trax DJ Tent.  I felt like I was back at Numbers during the late 80's/early 90's.  Awesome industrial music and a packed dance floor.  We were peaking and this was absolutely the right place to be.

Checked out 'Til Tuesday - their first performance in 35 years.  Aimee Mann looked fucking phenomenal - sexy af.

Death Cult was next.  This is just an earlier iteration of The Cult.  I was hoping they would just play a lot of Cult stuff.  Ian Asbury still sounds great but we weren't vibing with the deep cuts and started making our way to the next stage for DEVO.  As we made our way out of the crowd they finished with She Sells Sanctuary which was awesome.

DEVO DEVO DEVO

Fucking killed it.  @tbone_ you'll be happy to know that both my gf and I were rocking our DEVO gear.  Mark Mothersbaugh sounded fucking great.  He just turned 75 and killed it.  So much fun!

OMD was amazing and put on a great show.  We got in close to see the Go Go's.  It was loud af.  This was the loudest show of the day.  Belinda Carlisle looked like skeletor and really struggled singing.  The rest of the band sounded fucking awesome.  They were at their best when everyone was singing.  We split a little early to make our way to the mainstage to see New Order and heard the Go Go's finish up with Our Lips Are Sealed and We Got The Beat.  Sounded good from far away.

I have never seen New Order so I was excited to see them.  Their setlist was fantastic -  Transmission (Joy Division), Age of Consent, Isolation (Joy Division), Regret, State of the Nation, Sub-Culture, Bizarre Love Triangle, Plastic, True Faith, Blue Monday, Temptation, and Love Will Tear Us Apart as an encore.  They had a killer laser light show.  The only problem was that Bernard seemed like he was sick.  No energy.  Couldn't sing - was running out of breath.  It didn't help that he was dressed up like a grampa.  He and OG keyboardist, Gillian Gilbert, played together by the keyboards and it looked like Granny and Gramps playing holiday tunes.  I would like to see them again but it would be better if Peter Hook rejoined the band.

The festival was awesome and we're already planning to go back again next year.  Our gameplan of taking drugs and avoiding $20 beers and $30 rice bowls was right on.  My friends that drank and ate spent like $300.  Fuck that.

I wouldn't hold your breath on Hook patching it up with Bernard, I've been waiting 17+ years for it. Hook and the Light make plenty of money touring.

If you don't like dumb punk, you may not like them.  I enjoy bands like the viagra boys, the spits, the damned, the cramps, etc.  They're not great at their instruments, you won't like every song, and you probably shouldn't pay more than $25 to see them.  But if you're going to chill with a few beers, in a smallish venue, and look to shut your brain off for a while, they're fun.  Emos or Liberty Lunch would've been perfect for them and an ideal set time prolly lasts  45-50 minutes max.

Have seen Luna, Dean & Britta many times, and just missed out on Galaxie 500.  Could kick myself for missing Dean & Britta play music for Andy Warhol screen tests at the National Gallery of Art.  They may also slip in a VU cover, which is always fun.  Granada should be a great venue to see them.

Thanks.  I haven't liked much of what I've heard.  My daughter's band is touring with them this summer for a bit.  (Ironically, they have also toured with The Spits.)

I'm thinking we'll save our rare trip for Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta.

The Damned prolly had two original members playing but I would've liked to have seen the Adverts 30-40 years ago.  They're playing at Ottobar or the Metro in Baltimore which seems ideal. $55 to see the damned in DC is damned insane.  I'd say the same for the Sex Pistols.

They take a while to get used to but once you get it, you may really like them.  The Spits were like that too--they're not likable, and do yourself a favor and don't ever read the lyrics.  But they can eventually really plug into that buried 17 year old in some of us.

Of note, both Sammy and Bob Weir are 77. Sammy looks like he could run a marathon today and Bob looks like a pirate who just crawled out from under a rock.

On another note, an Austin buddy just picked up Pixies tix for Moody. So we will all be able to compare notes on that.

I saw it during Waxahatchee's set at Wilco.  Some boomer who clearly didn't want to be there, asked folks in front to sit down for his wife (20 years his junior, good for them both, I guess)?  Dude in front of him was "cool, I'll do that now.  But all bets are off when Wilco comes on."  The couple left when Wilco came on?

My new standard to this is "fuck you, this is a rock show."  You wanna sit down, go to the fucking opera or buy a box.

Get off my cloud, boomer.

As was the blatant shilling for his own tequila and about a million other things.  Everything at the merch tent was absolutely horribad from the Ts down to stickers.  Looked like it was conceived by some band member's wannabe designer girlfriend.  Like Spinal Tap worthy bad.  I mean, you had to laugh at some point at the crass commercialism of it.

Still, I gotta say Joe Satriani is probably one of about 2-3 dudes on the planet who can credibly step into EVH's shoes.  And Michael Anthony did a really great "Ain't Talking Bout Love" rendition.  That was a welcome surprise.

saw 2 songs of aether realm at radio east last night before "lightning in the area" stopped the show. unfortunate because they sounded pretty good. after over an hour delay gwar took the stage and did gwar things. always fun.

i truly don't understand the travis county weather policy for outdoor shows. they kick everyone out of the venue and tell you to "take shelter in your vehicle". i took a fucking uber so guess i'll go stand in the street and get rained on? we never actually left the venue, and it never rained, but it's stupid to make people leave the only place where there's shelter.
