Some folks concerned he might sit out if he's considering going into the portal... so $9.95ers are closely monitoring Worthy's actions and posting his whereabouts...

Yeah I get that. But he's not in the portal, and he's not eligible for the draft, so of course he's still practicing. And why would he be with any other position group. Maybe it was just written weirdly.

Source: Bijan Robinson, Roschon Johnson and DeMarvion Overshown opting out of Texas' Alamo Bowl game

Texas Longhorns Home
Texas star running backs Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson and fifth-year senior linebacker DeMarvion Overshown are opting out of the Longhorns’ Alamo Bowl game against Washington to prepare for the NFL Draft, a source close to the situation confirmed to Horns247.

The Longhorns began bowl practices on Friday without Robinson, Johnson and Overshown as well as 10 players who have either announced their intentions to transfer or have entered the transfer portal, including backup quarterback Hudson Card, the source said. In addition to Card, the list of players planning to transfer includes punter Isaac Pearson, linebacker Devin Richardson, offensive lineman Andrej Karic, offensive lineman Logan Parr, safety JD Coffey, cornerback Jamier Johnson, receiver Troy Omeire and defensive ends Prince Dorbah and D.J. Harris.

Other players who have indicated they are still making up their minds about whether to return to Texas next season, including junior middle linebacker Jaylan Ford, four-year junior receiver Jordan Whittington and fifth-year senior defensive linemen Moro Ojomo and Keondre Coburn, have been practicing with the team, the source said.

(Ojomo and Coburn have an extra year of eligibility remaining thanks to the NCAA awarding scholarship athletes an extra year due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.)

Robinson, the 2022 Doak Walker Award winner as the nation’s top collegiate running back, played three seasons at Texas and has indicated to coaches and teammates he will forego his remaining eligibility to enter the NFL Draft, the source said.

Johnson and Overshown have both accepted invitations to play in the Reese’s Senior Bowl on Feb. 4 in Mobile, Alabama, a top all-star showcase for departing college seniors in front of representatives from all 32 NFL teams.

Robinson, Johnson and Overshown haven’t yet made any official announcements about their future plans.

Steve Sarkisian said after Texas’ 38-27 victory over Baylor in the Longhorns’ regular-season finale that some players opting out of their team’s bowl game “is a reality.”

“I think it’s a reality,” Sarkisian said. “I hate it for them - that they have to make that choice, because the reality is that's a great opportunity. You get to celebrate with your team. You've earned that right. You've done well enough in the regular season to earn the right to play in a bowl game and have that experience.

“So now to get forced with a decision like that - I hate it for them, because the reality is, all of them deep down want to play with their teammates. So, now all of a sudden, they're getting into, ‘How could this affect me moving forward?’

“For some guys, they should play. It's an opportunity to play against a good opponent. It's an opportunity to put their film on tape one more time to get evaluated by the NFL. For other guys, maybe it is in their best interest not to play. There's a risk and reward in all of this, and so I try to have candid conversations with all of them individually, to hopefully come to really good decisions. But, like I said, I hate it for them.

“I wish we could insure everybody that if something were to happen, you'd be taken care of. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Everybody has kind of their value as it pertains to insurance policies, and we try to do the best we can. I appreciate the support from the university to do that.”

Robinson led the nation in yards from scrimmage in 2022 with 1,894 total yards (1,580 rushing, 314 receiving) while his 20 total touchdowns are second in FBS. He is projected by many scouts to be a first-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Johnson, who moved from quarterback to running back before his freshman season, ran for 563 yards on 93 carries (6.0 ypc) with five rushing touchdowns while catching 14 passes for 128 yards and one TD through the air in 2022. He finished his Texas career at No. 18 on UT’s all-time rushing list with 2,190 yards on 392 carries (5.6 ypc) and 23 touchdowns as well as 56 catches for 420 yards and three TDs through the air.

Overshown was the team’s second-leading tackler (96) in 2022 and had 10 tackles for loss, including four sacks, with five pass breakups and two quarterback hurries.

Texas (8-4) will face Washington (10-2) in the Valero Alamo Bowl at 8 pm CT on Dec. 29. Redshirt freshman running back Jonathon Brooks (24 carries, 179 yards, 7.5 ypc, four TDs in 2022) and junior running back Keilan Robinson (17 carries, 59 yards, 3.5 ypc in 2022) are likely to play a prominent role without Robinson and Johnson, while junior linebacker David Gbenda and sophomore linebacker Morice Blackwell are leading candidates to help fill Overshown's void.

I can’t blame Bijan and Roschon for sitting out. If either of them played, they’re probably getting 30 carries in a meaningless game.

Overshown has quite the injury history and he just played his best game as a Longhorn. Understandable to sit out.

Best of luck to all three. I hope they have long NFL careers somewhere not in Houston.

Sunday night team notes as Texas eases back into practice

Eric Nahlin•about 13 hours

Article written by:Eric Nahlin

AUSTIN, TX - NOVEMBER 12: Texas Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers throws a pass during Big 12 football game between the TCU Horned Frogs and the Texas Longhorns on November 12, 2022 at Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, TX. (Photo by John Rivera/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

Alamo Bowl practice began on Friday and continued throughout the weekend. Friday’s return to the field was so-so but as the players got back into the swing of things competitive nature kicked in and motivated more energetic practices. By Sunday energy appeared restored to normal.

IT mentioned on Thursday evening Doak Walker award winning running back Bijan Robinson and his stablemate Roschon Johnson wouldn’t participate in the bowl game. While they aren’t participating in practice they are serving as quasi-position coaches and remain involved with their teammates.

Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown was the third player IT mentioned as opting out of the bowl game. To this point, those are the only players who have opted out and we doubt that changes.

Overshown’s workload has since been picked up by Morice Blackwell and Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey. Jett Bush works at Will and Mike. David Gbenda has primarily remained the backup Mike to Jaylan Ford.

This is a big offseason for Blackwell. While sources feel confident he can grow into a full-time Will this offseason, his build might suggest a longer timeline. Still, IT sources are firm he has the mindset and ability to find the ball carrier to play off-ball. Obviously he’s plenty athletic. He’ll be one of many options the coaches throw at Overshown’s vacancy.

One aspect that had the players getting back into working shape was the coaches pitting good on good against each other in practice. IT didn’t lead the question about Quinn Ewers but heard back he has looked good. The source didn’t gush but he made it clear Ewers has been in command, on target, and also mentioned the deep wall to Worthy has been connecting in the good-on-good setting. As IT asked for any other players showing promise, the list continued to underline the passing game: Jordan Whittington, Casey Cain, Brenen Thompson, and Savion Red. Given the defense has been good, hearing about the offense is a good sign.

Since Red was mentioned a couple times we pressed further, “Not as fast as Whittington but big, quick, and attacks the ball in the air. He doesn’t lack confidence.” The source mentioned he has the ability to catch the ball outside of his frame. That’s something the roster has been lacking and will likely be addressed through the portal.

Another freshman mentioned was DJ Campbell. He’s been receiving reps with the first team but part of that is a function of Cole Huston being eased back in. The real O-line intrigue will occur during the spring.

We’ll have more on the team in the coming days.

The bolded part just sounds so weird to even include.

So Whittington is practicing which indicates he likely will be back next season, and Worthy is also out there and not spinning in the portal. That's all I needed to hear, never expected Bijan, Rojo and Dmo to play in the bowl.

Whittington is definitely a legit NFL prospect, but needs to either dominate from the slot or expand his boundary skills, ball tracking, separating and route running. I dont know if he’s a cant miss NFL player who could get enough time in the pros to make leaving early a no-brainer.

Cross posting from the Ewers thread.

Via FCB

After struggling through the final five games of the season with a 50 percent completion rate, five touchdown passes, four interceptions and eight sacks, Texas redshirt freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers has become a man on a mission, according to team sources.

Steve Sarkisian said the first half of bowl practices would be training camp-style and stress fundamentals and technique with the second half of bowl practices focusing on game planning for an Alamo Bowl showdown with Washington (10-2) on Dec. 29.

Team sources said the first half of bowl practices, Ewers really worked on cleaning up his footwork — not just in the passing game, but in the running game — on taking the right step to the mesh point on handoffs.

“He’s looking and playing so much more confidently,” one team source said. “He’s been sharp.”

Another source said in 11-on-11, ones against ones, Ewers has connected with Xavier Worthy three times on deep shots in the last two practices.

Ewers obviously needs to carry this groove over to the Alamo Bowl — not just to help Texas win the game (in a battle with a UW offense capable of scoring points — 40.8 ppg), but to start re-building his confidence, so the bar graph of his development starts going up and staying up.

Remember football? Actual football? While most of the focus is on recruiting with National Signing Day upon us, the team took to the field again for another bloc of practices.

Rather than practicing Friday-Sunday like the previous week, the team practiced Friday and Saturday before returning to full pads for the first time since the Baylor game on Monday. In addition to the offense and defense going ‘good on good’ they also began bowl install with the Washington Huskies in mind.

The Huskies have one of the best passing attacks in the country which the coaches are using for motivation.

Other motivation comes in the form of opportunity. When asked who is taking advantage of bowl practices the first answer was Jonathon Brooks. “He has a next man-up mentality and he’s clearly taking advantage of his opportunity. He’s going to have a big bowl game. Jaydon Blue is also excited for the chance to get more carries. He’s going to be good, but keep an eye on Brooks.”

On the defensive side a name was mentioned for the first time — freshman corner Xavion Brice. “There have been some flashes out of him recently. He’s not a favorite to be next man up but he’s covering well and gaining confidence.” He could play next year if pressed into action? “Play, yes he could play next year.”

How about the young receivers? “Savion Red is becoming more and more consistent. He’s had some good practices. On Thompson, needs to get a little stronger. If the DB gets his hands on him it’s over, but if he doesn’t get his hands on him then Thompson can utilize his speed.”

Quinn Ewers’ ‘good on good’ portion was solid, but he wasn’t playing quite as well as during the previous practice bloc. He did hit some downfield throws — one dime to Whittington out on the sidelines. “Ewers is playing pretty well.”

We’re working on getting more notes on the offensive line for later in the week.

Spoiler

Bowl preparation continues apace with the Alamo Bowl just six days away. If you’re a Texas fan, or writer, it’s creeping up pretty fast with the focus being heavily geared toward recruiting this past week.

Two of the big offseason storylines will be if Quinn Ewers can show significant improvement and if the offensive line can take the next step, despite losing a good right tackle in Christian Jones. Bowl practices are a good way to get a jump start on the following spring.

The O-line group that started all 12 games together will make it 13 on December 29. Cole Hutson is healthy and back at right guard meaning Banks-Conner-Majors-Hutson-Jones will give it one final go. Two of the younger offensive linemen receiving praise are DJ Campbell and Cameron Williams. Those are precisely the two we need to be hearing about given needs next season.

An early guess at spring’s O-line is Banks-Hutson-Majors-Campbell-Conner/Williams. We’re unsure why they would move Hutson, but that’s the early prognostication from a good source. We believe it’s likely Conner will get a strong look at right tackle. That should be a good battle between his experience and Williams’ upside. Neto Umeozulu will also push for guard reps. Given the 2022 class being on campus as well as 4/5 of the 2023 signees arriving in January, Kyle Flood will be licking his chops and coaching hard.

Wide receiver is paced by Xavier Worthyand Jordan Whittington. Whittington was the impetus for “Pretty excited about a WR development” in the moderator only thread. We think it’s more likely than not he returns. We’ll go more into that at the proper time. Savion Red is looking more and more comfortable in the offense.

Running back will be fun to watch in the bowl game. Everyone’s high on Jonathon Brooks but Jaydon Blue will also get touches.

As far as the portal goes:

WR – 1 or 2: IT expects at least one receiver to be added to the roster but a caveat applies, it’s dependent on who actually enters. Clearly Texas hasn’t been very proactive with players who have already entered. It’s likely something will shake out.

DB – 1 or 2: Getting information on Syracuse safety Ja’Had Carter is like pulling teeth. We just know Texas will factor in his final decision. Ohio State is also involved.

Edge/DL – 1 or 2: Similar to receiver, nothing in the portal seems too enticing at this time. They would like some experience at Edge if possible.

Best player available or emerging need – 1: You always have to hold your water for the unforeseen.
Expect more activity after bowl season.

Quick hitters from the Alamo Bowl arrival

JEFF HOWE            Dec 24th

I’ll go more in depth on some of these notes later, but here are the highlights from a media availability with Steve Sarkisian, Jordan Whittington and Jaylan Ford upon arrival at the team hotel in San Antonio:

— Sark has talked a lot about the passing game needing to improve and he’s seen improvement in bowl practices. The team had a practice inside the bubble this morning and Sark called it the best practice they’ve had throwing the ball in a long time.

— I asked Sark about the progress of Maalik Murphy, who Sark said continues to make positive strides. Whittington said he’s excited about Murphy’s future given what he’s seen in bowl practices.

— Other bowl practice standouts who were mentioned include Jaydon Blue, Larry Turner-Gooden and Mo Blackwell.

— I asked Sark whether or not they looked at getting some of the signees involved in bowl practices. He said they wanted to, it didn’t work out from a timing standpoint. It would’ve been a situation where they would’ve practiced Tuesday and Wednesday, went home and then would’ve had to come back later in the week. Logistically, Sark said the benefit to the players wasn’t there.

— Whittington and Ford both told me they’re undecided on whether to turn pro or come back to Texas. Both said they’ll focus on their decisions after the bowl game.

— Look for Blackwell and Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey to fill the hole created by DeMarvion Overshown’s opt out. Sark expressed a lot of confidence in Blue, Jonathon Brooks and Keilan Robinson handling the workload at running back.

Seriously wtf are they doing? The game is on Thursday and a 1 hr drive from campus. Let them have their families come in for Christmas if they want and travel on Monday.

We may lose a lot of recruits to A&M. They're with their families on Christmas. There's no way their families could visit our guys in San Antonio where they're staying in a nice hotel instead of the dorm in Austin.

This is a fiasco and a disaster!

Texas Longhorns team notes heading into Alamo Bowl

Eric Nahlin•about 3 hours

Article written by:Eric Nahlin

Jonathon Brooks (Photo by Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

While the No. 20 Texas Longhorns prepare for tonight’s Alamo Bowl battle with No. 12 Washington, here’s the latest on the team before kickoff tonight from the Alamodome.

We don’t have a whole lot to share that’s new but we had to make final checks to try and gauge motivation of the team. Everything checks out fine, but they’re just a handful of hours away from kickoff in San Antonio.

Said one source, “The team is excited, not necessarily because it’s the Alamo Bowl but because it’s another game. They’ve been excited to play all year. You can tell the coaches really want this one and the players are feeding off that.”

In a recent press conference Steve Sarkisian singled out T’Vondre Sweat for his improved leadership and maturity. That was a great thing to hear about a player we’ve had on transfer watch a time or two during his career. A source said of Sweat, “He is becoming a leader and more vocal. It’s what the program needs from him and what his teammates expect of him as a 5th year guy.”

With DeMarvion Overshown opting out Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey has seen increased snaps. So too has David Gbenda and Morice Blackwell. With Blackwell, there’s some optimism he’ll be able to add a versatile, athletic component to the Horns defense against U-Dub. We can expect to see all of them get a chance to play tonight.

Like opportunity is knocking for Blackwell, it’s also knocking for Jonathon Brooks and Jaydon Blue. Sources are excited to see both. Don’t be surprised to see more from Keilan Robinson too, the most athletic of the bunch.

Quinn Ewers needed these bowl practices, said one source. He’s been able to fine-tune some aspects of his game, while gaining timing and confidence with his receivers over the last month.

Tight end Gunnar Helm will also see more snaps after Andrej Karic’s departure. Sources remain optimistic Helm can be a multi-year starter in his in-line tight end role.

While on the subject of tight end, we’re watching the recruitment of Duce Robinson more and more closely. The Arizona five-star tight end is about as elite as it gets as a receiver. There aren’t many targets remaining on the board for Texas so focus will be laser focused on Robinson over the next month and change.

So fucking great of you Tvondre to step up and finally become a vocal leader who takes things seriously in the month before your final game of your 5th year on campus. Excellent timing.

Starters opted out for the game so their season long backups will get to play. Thanks for the breaking news there Nahlin.

Thanks for telling us that recruiting focus is on the one big time guy left on the recruiting board. I was afraid all focus was on the walk-on defensive backs.
