What to watch: Week 7 college football viewing guide, picks against the spread

(Note: All times ET, odds from BetMGM)

No. 10 Penn State at No. 5 Michigan

Time: Noon | TV: Fox | Line: UM -7 | Total: 51.5

This is the biggest game of the season in the Big Ten thus far. Penn State enters Ann Arbor coming off a bye with a 5-0 record that includes two road wins already on the year. The Nittany Lions had a last-minute touchdown drive to beat Purdue in Week 1 and then went down to Auburn and blew out the Tigers 41-12. PSU has a veteran quarterback in Sean Clifford and an improved running game with freshmen backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen. The defense is also off to a strong start, having forced 12 turnovers.

The PSU defense will have its hands full with Michigan, particularly corralling running back Blake Corum. Corum is seventh in the nation with 735 yards and is second with 11 rushing TDs. He’s been a big play threat for the Wolverines and is also a tremendous help for first-year starting quarterback JJ McCarthy. McCarthy has been very efficient, albeit against some lackluster competition. UM played one of the easiest non-conference schedules in the country and has knocked off Maryland, Iowa and Indiana so far in Big Ten play. The visiting Nittany Lions will be Michigan’s toughest test by a significant margin.

Nick Bromberg: Michigan -7, Sam Cooper: PSU +7

No. 3 Alabama at No. 6 Tennessee

Time: 3:30 p.m. | TV: CBS | Line: Alabama -7.5 | Total: 65.5

All eyes will be on Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, entering Saturday’s showdown in Knoxville. Young injured his shoulder two weeks ago in the Arkansas game and missed last week’s win over Texas A&M. Without Young, Alabama was just not the same, with backup QB Jalen Milroe turning the ball over four times. Those turnovers helped A&M stay in the game and the Aggies nearly pulled off the upset. But a goal line pass in the final seconds fell incomplete and the Crimson Tide survived to improve to 6-0. Needless to say, Alabama needs Young if it wants to leave Knoxville with a victory.

This is Tennessee’s biggest game in a long, long time. Not only has Tennessee lost 15 straight against Alabama, but a win here would put the Vols in the thick of the College Football Playoff race. To get to this point, Tennessee has used a potent offense led by senior quarterback Hendon Hooker. Hooker has already led Tennessee to road wins over Pitt and LSU, as well as a home win over Florida. Hosting Alabama is a step up in competition, but Tennessee looks to have the goods on offense to pull off the upset. Even Texas A&M’s lackluster group could move the ball on Alabama. But whether the Tennessee defense is ready for the step up in competition remains to be seen.

Nick: Tennessee +7.5, Sam: Tennessee +7.5

No. 8 Oklahoma State at No. 13 TCU

Time: 3:30 p.m. | TV: ABC | Line: TCU -4 | Total: 68.5

From top to bottom, the Big 12 feels like the most balanced and competitive conference. And to this point in the season, Oklahoma State and TCU are the lone unbeatens remaining in the league (Kansas State is 3-0 in Big 12 play but has a loss to Tulane). Oklahoma State was expected to contend for the conference crown. OSU played in the title game last year and was in CFP contention, but lost a heartbreaker to Baylor. Now the Cowboys want a chance at redemption. They already went on the road to beat Baylor this year and are coming off a 41-31 win over Texas Tech. The defense is nowhere near as strong as it was last fall and will face another big challenge on Saturday in Fort Worth.

When the season began, TCU was considered more of a long shot in the Big 12. The Horned Frogs were transitioning out of the Gary Patterson era and brought in Sonny Dykes from SMU to take the reins. The transition has gone as smoothly as TCU could have hoped — especially on offense. The Horned Frogs have gotten better and better as the weeks have progressed, posting wins over SMU, Oklahoma and Kansas. Max Duggan is playing the best football of his career at quarterback, Kendre Miller has been excellent at running back and receiver Quentin Johnston finally had his breakout last week with 14 catches for 206 yards and a touchdown in the win over Kansas.

Nick: OSU +4, Sam: OSU +4

No. 4 Clemson at Florida State

Time: 7:30 p.m. | TV: ABC | Line: Clemson -3.5 | Total: 51

Is this trip to Florida State the toughest test of the season so far for Clemson? The oddsmakers certainly think so. Clemson is just a 3.5-point favorite on the road at FSU, according to BetMGM. That’s the smallest point spread of the year for the Tigers, who were favored by 7.5 points at Wake Forest and 6.5 points at home vs. NC State. Clemson handled NC State 30-20 but needed double-overtime to best Wake Forest. That was a day game in Winston-Salem. A primetime game in Tallahassee is a different animal and the Tigers could be in for a serious challenge from an FSU team coming off back-to-back losses.

FSU is in its third season under Mike Norvell and have clearly improved, but the last two weeks were a setback. The Seminoles started the year 4-0 and were back in the Top 25 before losing 31-21 at home to Wake Forest and then blowing a 17-3 lead in last week’s 19-17 road loss to NC State. Florida State has been dealing with a lot of injuries in recent weeks, with top running back Treshaun Ward’s status up in the air after he was injured in the NC State game. Nonetheless, you know FSU will be motivated with Clemson coming to town. The chance to upset a top 5 team only comes around every so often.

Nick: FSU +3.5, Sam: Clemson -3.5

No. 7 USC at No. 20 Utah

Time: 8 p.m. | TV: Fox | Line: Utah -3.5 | Total: 65

The Lincoln Riley train at USC keeps on rolling. The Trojans are now 6-0 with a 4-0 mark in Pac-12 play so far in Riley’s first season running the program. But there’s been just one tough road test on the schedule so far, and USC needed a late Caleb Williams touchdown pass to escape Oregon State with a 17-14 win. Since then, USC has taken care of business at home vs. Arizona State and Washington State before this weekend’s trip to Salt Lake City. Williams hasn’t been super sharp in recent weeks, but running back Travis Dye has topped 100 yards in four of the last five weeks.

On the heels of a Pac-12 title last year, Utah dropped its opener on the road to Florida but rebounded with four straight wins. That set up a big one last Saturday at UCLA, but the Utes were thoroughly outplayed in a 42-32 loss. With USC, UCLA and Oregon all still unbeaten in conference play, this is a big game if Utah wants to get back into the Pac-12 title race. Utah hasn’t been as stout along the lines of scrimmage as usual, but this team still has a lot of talent. That includes Cam Rising, one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the country. The Utes will need a big game from Rising to pick up a needed win over USC.

Nick: USC +3.5, Sam: USC +3.5

Head-to-head ATS: Nick: 17-13, Sam: 16-14

Week 7 best bets

Nick Bromberg (Last week: 2-1, Overall: 12-6)

Miami OH (-6.5) at Bowling Green: Both teams are 1-1 in MAC play but Miami looks to be the better team. Bowling Green has been outscored by 86 points so far this season while Miami has a win over Northwestern and its MAC win is over Kent State. Bowling Green's is over an Akron team that’s been outscored by 135 points. With the spread within a touchdown, I’m taking the favorite. Pick: Miami -6.5

Arkansas (-1.5) at BYU: The Cougars’ loss to Notre Dame was just the second time a BYU game has gone under so far this season. Arkansas games have gone over five times in 2022. But this is the highest total of the season for either team. Arkansas hasn’t scored more than 26 points in each of its last three games and BYU’s offense struggled against the Fighting Irish. I’m going against the trend. Pick: Under 66.5

San Jose State (-8.5) at Fresno State: QB Jake Haener is set to miss the game again for Fresno State. The Bulldogs haven't covered a spread all season and most recently lost by five to UConn and by 20 to Boise State. Couple that with a San Jose State defense that's the best in the Mountain West and this should be an easy win for the Spartans. Pick: SJSU -8.5

Sam Cooper (Last week: 0-3, Overall: 11-7)

Minnesota (-6.5) at No. 24 Illinois: Illinois is coming off two physical wins over Wisconsin and Iowa and could be without QB Tommy DeVito, WR Isaiah Williams and two defensive starters in this one. Minnesota is coming off a bye and is going to have star RB Mo Ibrahim back in the lineup. I took Minnesota to cover in my picks column, but I actually like the under the more I think about it. I have a lot of respect for Illinois defensive coordinator Ryan Walters. Pick: Under 39.5

Old Dominion at Coastal Carolina (-12.5): Coastal is still undefeated but has played several close games against bad opponents. The Chanticleers are 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 games as a double-digit favorite. Old Dominion is coming off a bye and has enough talent to keep this within the number. Pick: ODU +12.5

Utah State (-10.5) at Colorado State: Utah State is just 2-4 but has looked much better in recent weeks with Cooper Legas at quarterback. USU played BYU into the fourth quarter in Provo and then upset Air Force last week. The Aggies are the defending Mountain West champions and a much better team than what they showed early in the year. They can roll past a terrible Colorado State team. Pick: Utah State -10.5

It is nice for LA that right as the Rams start to suck both UCLA and USC are good.

Though I have a feeling none of them are getting great crowds this year.

Seeing several folks picking Utah to beat trojans Saturday since game is in Utah...

OU has faced the three teams in the conference that may lose more often than not, but actually have a history of winning against them.

Will be interesting to see if the other teams play tight because of the name on the uniform.

Yeah, jayhawk players going into Norman with a good chance to win is a new thing.

Kansas probably will be without their starting QB, while most expect Dillon Gabriel to return for blOU this Saturday...

KU damn near beat them in Lawrence last year with Bean starting at QB and Caleb Williams starting for OU.

There's no reason they can't beat them in Norman with Bean.

Is it weird that I want OU to win this one?  They already have three conf losses.  I’d like both Kansas and Tech to have three losses as well.  The more two and three loss teams, the more likely we are to land in the Conf Title game.  Winning out is obviously our goal, but the odds of us dropping another game are pretty decent.

Yes, it's weird. :)

I understand your line of thinking there, but really the question is do you think Kansas will be the most likely team standing in your way of making the title game? I'd say probably not; odds are your more direct competition are OSU, TCU, Baylor and K-State; so KU winning and OU losing their 4th straight and continuing to spiral is the best outcome.

If it were Tech playing them, I'd say yeah you should probably root for OU since you already beat OU and lost to Tech. But KU? Nah... you gotta root for OU to continue their death spiral. :D

College Football’s Most Sought-After Seats for Week 7 Games

Kevin Sweeney - 4h ago
Quote
Here’s a look at the biggest matchups and most in-demand seats for this weekend.
1. Alabama at Tennessee, Oct. 15, 3:30 p.m. ET

This is the biggest game in a long time at Neyland Stadium. The No. 6 Vols have their highest national ranking since 2005, and now get their crack at Alabama on their home field. Josh Heupel’s team walked into a potential trap game against LSU in Baton Rouge and passed the test with flying colors, as QB Hendon Hooker added a few highlights to his Heisman Trophy reel and the Tennessee defense held strong.Demand Meter: 😍

Can Tennessee put itself into the College Football Playoff picture with a huge win? Alabama struggled to put away Texas A&M Saturday with backup QB Jalen Milroe stepping in for the injured Bryce Young. Still, Nick Saban hasn’t lost to Tennessee since taking over in Tuscaloosa, and only two of those 15 games have been decided by one score. This should be one of the best atmospheres and could be one of the best games of the season… which is why it’s no surprise the average ticket price on SI Tickets is $871, highest of the week by far. Ahead of Week 7, Tennessee’s National Championship ticket prices have also increased by 46%.

2. Penn State at Michigan, Oct 15, noon ET

Demand Meter: 😍

The Big Ten East race official ramps up this weekend in Ann Arbor. Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State all rank in the top 10 of the AP Poll, but only one of those teams will get to the Big Ten Championship Game in December. Michigan’s offense hasn’t looked quite as explosive since Big Ten play began, but Blake Corum remains one of the best running backs in the nation and the Wolverine defense is as fierce as ever. On the other side, Penn State is off to an undefeated start thanks to a talented stable of running backs and a veteran QB in Sean Clifford.

It’s hard to overstate the implications of this one considering both teams still have matchups with Ohio State ahead of them. The average get-in price for this one is just over $400, per SI Tickets.

3. Oklahoma State at TCU, Oct. 15, 3:30 p.m. ET

Demand Meter: 😍

The only two remaining undefeated teams in the Big 12 face off in this mid-afternoon showdown. Sonny Dykes has sparked a quick turnaround at TCU, including a back-and-forth road victory at upstart Kansas over the weekend. A big reason for the Horned Frogs’ improvement: The play of QB Max Duggan, who accounted for four touchdowns Saturday and now has 14 TD passes compared to just one interception on the season. Can Duggan and a raucous home crowd lift the Horned Frogs past the No. 8 Cowboys? The fans certainly think so—TCU’s Big 12 Championship prices have increased by 206%, according to SI Tickets.

4. USC at Utah, Oct 15, 8p. ET

Demand Meter: 😀

Utah has been somewhat disappointing this season, dropping its second game of the season over the weekend against UCLA. But with an experienced QB in Cam Rising in a historically difficult place to play, this profiles as perhaps the biggest test of the season for Lincoln Riley and USC.

The Pac-12 looks wide-open right now, with USC, UCLA and Oregon all undefeated in league play and Utah right behind them with one loss. For the Utes to seriously contend for a second straight conference title, they likely need to pull off this upset. But slowing down Caleb Williams figures to be a challenge after giving up 42 points to UCLA on Saturday.

5. NC State at Syracuse, Oct. 15, 3:30 p.m. ET

Demand Meter: 😀

You might not have circled this game on your calendar in the preseason, but we’ve got a mid-October top-20 matchup in upstate New York with implications in the ACC Atlantic division. Syracuse is off to a 5–0 start, but now faces the meat of its schedule with matchups with the Wolfpack and Clemson looming in back-to-back weeks. Even one win would be a major needle-mover nationally for the Orange, and two wins would make Dino Babers’ team the favorite in the ACC title race. One storyline to watch: NC State’s QB situation after veteran starter Devin Leary left with an arm injury in Saturday’s win against Florida State.

6. Minnesota at Illinois, Oct. 15, noon ET

Demand Meter: 😀

Illinois is making moves in the second year of the Bret Bielema era, beating Big Ten West stalwarts Wisconsin and Iowa in back-to-back weeks. Could the Illini really go to the Big Ten Championship Game? One more win this weekend, and that starts to become a reality. In fact, Big Ten conference championship ticket prices for Illinois have increased 152% ahead of Week 7, according to SI Tickets

Minnesota dropped a key matchup with Purdue two weeks ago but is also a top contender in the West. The matchup to watch in this one: Minnesota’s running game averages almost 250 yards per game led by star back Mohamed Ibrahim, while Illinois has the best scoring defense in college football. Don’t expect much scoring, but this matchup should be worth watching.

7. Clemson at Florida State, Oct. 15, 7:30 p.m. ET

Demand Meter: 😀

Florida State’s hopes of a breakthrough season have been spoiled by consecutive losses to fellow ACC hopefuls Wake Forest and NC State, but Mike Norvell’s team does get a huge opportunity at home Saturday night against Clemson. The Tigers had some nervy moments earlier against Boston College before pulling away, but this figures to be an even tougher road test for D.J. Uiagalelei’s team. After last week’s win, Clemson’s ACC Conference Championship ticket prices increased by 40%. We’ll see if Jordan Travis can lead the Seminoles to a season-defining upset or if the Noles will fade into true “pretender” status in the ACC race. The average ticket price for this one on SI Tickets is $160.

8. Iowa State at Texas, Oct. 15, noon ET

Demand Meter: 🙂

After a record-setting display on both sides of the ball in a rivalry win over Oklahoma, Texas is thinking big in the Big 12 title race. But hopes of this being the year Texas returns to contender status rely on taking care of business in matchups like this, against an Iowa State team that has lost three straight. The Cyclones aren’t your typical 3–3 team, having lost those three games by one, three and seven points respectively. Still, a struggling Cyclone offense that has scored one total touchdown in the last two weeks with Quinn Ewers, Bijan Robinson and the explosive Texas offense on the other side. The average get-in price for this Big 12 showdown is just under $100 on SI Tickets.

9. LSU at Florida, Oct. 15, 7p. ET

Demand Meter: 🙂

When these two teams face off, it’s almost always close. Eight of the last 10 meetings have been decided by one score or less, including last year’s 49–42 offensive explosion. But both teams have new coaches and new quarterbacks from last year’s meeting, and each side has plenty to play for in the SEC standings. LSU took its first conference loss of the season Saturday against Tennessee, while Florida wants to stay in the mix in the SEC East after knocking off Missouri over the weekend.

Tickets are on sale for an average of $171, per SI Tickets.

10. Mississippi State at Kentucky, Oct. 15, 7:30 p.m. ET

 Demand Meter: 🙂

With backup quarterback Kaiya Sheron stepping in for potential No. 1 overall pick Will Levis, Kentucky’s offense sputtered in a devastating home loss to South Carolina. That defeat takes a lot of wind out of the Wildcats’ sails in the SEC race, and the road doesn’t get any easier against a ranked Mississippi State team that has played excellent football lately. Can the Cowboys get a big win heading into a road trip to Alabama next week, or will Kentucky get back on track?

With Jalon Daniels playing for KU, for sure OU loses a 4th straight. Without Jalon Daniels, strong maybe. OU is going down again in my opinion. Kansas ain’t fuckin around. I bet they remember Caleb Williams having to turn into David Blaine to pull off the shit he did just to barely escape.

Dude Kansas will be out for blood after they collapsed in the fourth last season. Jason Bean ain't a scrub either. If OU comes out with the 3 man front again, Kansas will run all over them. I expect Bean to throw 4 TDs like he did against TCU. Maybe more.

All I know is for Saturday, this one time only, Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Yeah last year Bean was 17/23 for 246 yards, 1 TD; plus 59 rushing yards against the soft pussy weak oddly capable in hindsight Alex Grinch defense.  I imagine he'll be just fine against the fearsome amazing awesome shit fest Brent Venables defense.

You're new here, so folks are letting the stupid slide, but that could merely encourage more stupid in the future. So let me help you out - do not ever cheer for Oklahoma for any reason whatsoever. Ever. It never fucking works out and you just wind up feeling dirty either way. Every time idiots have shown up on the Internet and shouted about "needing to cheer for OU" because of such and such scenario they have been wrong and were roundly mocked for it.

Morons cheered for OU to beat A&M, Okie State and Tech in 2008 "because we need the OU win to look as good as possible" after losing to Tech. OU promptly went out and blew those fucking teams out and jumped Texas in the BCS due to recency bias. Fuck rooting for OU. If OU is playing the Taliban, I'm wearing a turban in the stands and declaring jihad. If OU is playing Satan and an army of demons, I'm wearing an inverted pentagram necklace and shouting in tongues for the Dark Prince. Get your shit together.

Fuck that shit! Fuck OU in their dirty stretched out ass holes. Always. Always always always. Fuck them. May they lose every game from now until the day they shut down their program and their campus is wiped from the earth by a tornado.

Yes, and quite frankly, it’s almost unforgivable. If Texas finds themselves in a position to benefit from OU winning a game, that’s the quiet part that you don’t say out loud.

Not scrolling too much further after only seeing an OSU guy reply, and ou's abomination of an attempt to look like tosu. What the fuck is wrong with you? The question could make more sense if you had said something like,  "It's going to be hilarious watching bird tap dat ass this weekend, but I hope they don't score more than we did a week ago." But even that would be fucking stupid.

Let's get this straight once for fucking all-- fuck ou. They need to fuck off to fuckerfuckerland. The quicker the better.
