him talking about snl is hilarious. he says he’s “0 for 2”, but that he had a good time. he mentions that him trying to talk about ken burns documentaries during his snl monologues was a big miss. he says, “the musical guest was tate mccrae, so the audience is like 20 year old chicks all sitting front row, and then some ogre walked out on stage and started talking about shelby foote and the civil war.” he is the best at self deprecation.

jason bateman: “are you happy with where you’re at? you find yourself at the top of your field, and it’s so drastically different from this other path that you thought that you’d be on (shane was studying to be a history teacher at westchester college when he started blowing up in comedy)- have you adapted? are you digging it?”

shane: “it’s pretty uncomfortable, with the imposter syndrome, and the depression and all that, but uh…”

I think Shane did alright on the latest episode of Kill Tony. I know Tony has some rules about panel guests not talking too much, so it’s a limited format. He some nice one liners as always, and his quips about the HVAC tech killed.

Joe DeRosa of Austin Comedy Scene fame is the beer guy. Tommy Pope aka The Wop from Tires is Shane’s friend. Not sure who the pretty young lady is. I believe Shane’s girl is a blonde.

Pope and Sullivan as the Wop Used Car dealers are a highlight of Tires.

I believe The Wops are Pope and Andrew  Schultz. Regardless, they’re funny as hell. The scene where they’re talking about their cousin’s ass had me in tears.

matt and shane talk about that original pickup artists guy. shane gillis is funnier and brings me more laughs just sitting around with matt every day and shooting the shit than just about any other contemporary comic’s hour long special that i can name. especially from the rogansphere. so, so few people are genuinely hilarious. he’s one of them.

its still wild to me how many people will watch shane gillis do his special, hear him talk about how we as a country do nothing to curb, much less try and eradicate our mass shooting problem, only to have him justify it by saying, “at least we aren’t gay”, and not understand who he’s making fun of, and in fact think that he is a part of the very group that he’s taking shots at. it’s like reading the gavin newsom tweets and not getting the joke. “shane gillis loves mass shootongs and hates gay people!”. lol ok.

I like Shane Gillis.  He's funny.  I appreciate his goofy delivery style and I am a fan of comedians who tear into the audience.

That said, damn it one poster is trying awfully hard to make we want to not like him.  Just stop.

He definitely punches up (or is it down) to MAGA stupidity and he has lived in the heart of that MAGA country of central PA, so he satires and makes fun of it really well. But let's not act like he's a liberal, too. He definitely comes across as bi-political, can swing both ways. Which of course, in real life makes you hated but with comedy, it gives you breadth and a strong repertoire.

What you described is exactly my problem with Shane Gillis. He's an opportunist and hedges as much as possible.

The dude moved to Austin for the comedy scene, and now spends his time shitting on Austin and the comedy scene. He joined the Rogan circle and now is trying to worm his way out of it. He makes fun of Trump but thinks Trump is hilarious. He doesn't want to lose his Trump supporter frat bros or the "liberals" who aren't hyper aware of the comedy/podcast scene and just see his TV appearances.

Nothing to do w/ Shane Gillis, or the irrational infatuation of same:

The Pickup Artist was filmed in Austin.  Very funny to see people you know on that show, out at clubs getting hammered in the background.  Couple friends even ended up speaking on camera.

That sounds like being genuine and having multifaceted opinions and stances.

I'm sure he hedges in some ways to protect his image - pretty much everyone as big as he is does. I don't think that makes him afraid to make certain comments. They are routinely pretty fucking edgy on their podcast.

Is Shane Gillis still appearing on Kill Tony? According to YT, he did one a few weeks ago. That's all I need to know.

I don't fault him for chasing that bag, but it doesn't mean I have to like it. Comedian podcasts might be the worst thing to happen in entertainment media. I've had to slog through some at my BIL's request, brutal.

Yep. I agree.  Shane complains about hot it is in Austin at least once on every single social media post.

nah, he really doesn’t. if you watch his specials it’s not hard to read between the lines and see which side he leans towards, and if you catch any of his podcast, even clips on twitter or youtube, it’s blatantly obvious where he stands.

again, when the right canceled bud light he kept drinking it so publicly that he became bud light’s spokesperson. when he does his stand up, he doesn’t punch down. if he’s talking about mentally disabled people it’s real-life stories of him volunteering with them, humanizing them to his audience, and basically putting them on a pedestal (and i know you’ve seen the clips of him completely shutting down andrew schultz’s podcast when they made fun of people with downs). when he does make fun of people it’s usually himself, and when it’s not, it’s people like the president, or navy seals. he’s not a guy who punches down to get laughs, which is increasingly rare these days.

then, if you actually do look deeper into his podcast and podcast appearances, that’s when you see him seriously going after right wing figures and right wing ideology. he basically lost his shit over how wildly unprofessional trump’s cabinet was in public at the ufc fight; he recently had a fairly viral clip of him slamming the comedy mothership, where he basically says, “every single set doesn’t have to feature the word retarded, y’all need to dial it back some.”; and while he does make fun of liberals (as he should), i’ve never seen him actually go after liberals or liberal ideology the way he has conservatives and their ideology, ever.

the bottom line, and the tl;dr is that shane gillis’s entire personality and shtick would have been considered right down the middle in the 90’s or even 2000’s, but is often considered “offensive” in today’s hyper-hypersensitive culture where there’s a real bloodlust for cancelling people and a deep, deep desire to be offended. shane gillis is as solid a dude as they come, and you don’t have to look very deep to see it.

yeah, this is 100% wrong. he’s never been a part of joe rogan’s circle, he just got his big break when he went on rogan’s podcast. after his big break he kept getting invited back, and so of course he kept appearing, because he’d be a moron not to, but ever since he blew up the dynamic has always been that the joe rogan circle wants shane around a lot, but he’s not a part of their crew. never has been. and ever since he truly blew up you’ve not only seen him with that crowd less and less (i don’t remember the last time he was on JRE), he actually goes after that crew and the way they behave, as mentioned in my previous post.

it wasn’t shane gillis’s choice to get famous by going on joe rogan’s podcast, and unlike ari shaffir, brendan schaub, tony hinchcliffe, and the other half dozen unfunny comics who have at least tried to attach themselves to joe rogan’s hip, shane has never leaned on or needed joe or his comedy club or his circle of douchebag friends for validation or popularity. he just happened to get famous on JRE, and he’s been doing his own thing ever since.
