Arch Manning: Doing his best JAG impression to fool scouts

Sark tried to fill in the gaps with the portal. He brought in a punter, a place kicker, a tightend and a backup QB with game experience - in case Arch missed a couple of games. He tried to cover all his bases, and get this team to the NC game. There was no way for Sark to know Manning was a head case and would wilt under the pressure like a little girl. I think the whole team would be playing better, incuding the OL, if they had not lost confidence in their QB.

I dont see that working. Calwell wss 63.2% comp, 1,608 yds, 13 TDs, and 8 Ints at Troy. Maybe he has greatly improved since then, but nothing in his history suggests he will be an answer.

Troy won 4 games. I don’t think you can really use his results there to justify anything.

Oregon had no issues addressing their OL needs in the portal during the offseason. Flood just thought he was too good to turn to the portal to fill the holes he created with his shitty recruiting and evals.

Yeah didn't they take a OT from Texas State who is now their starting RT? Baker isn't ready. I guess Cojoe's injury is having a bigger impact than we thought. If Stroh really gets any more playing time at Texas the coaching staff are just retards.

Oregon is starting 3 OL from the portal. If Texas was looking for OL, I am pretty sure agents would inquire

lolwut?  No.  They just aren't that good.  We saw PK replace NFL picks with two new NFL picks and thought it would just happen again.  It didn't.

I'm not saying 23 draft picks is what's keeping this team from being elite, it hasn't slowed down tOSU, but it has CLEARLY had an impact that was unexpected.  We just aren't as talented as we were last year.  That's the story.

To be fair, the defense got pushed around against Florida on the ground last year too. And before anyone says it was late in the game, they rushed for 80 yards by halftime, and another 80 in the 3rd quarter. So I wouldn't give up on the defense just yet. Florida's O-line, in combination with the patience of their RBs might just be something unique that we struggle with. Not to say our interior in elite, but I think it's better than they showed this week.

Late on the throw. Play was going nowhere though. The issue with the offense is Arch has to be perfect for this offense to score at a high level. There is no run game. The OL is shaky. It is a bad combination for a QB learning on the job. Sark needs to find some reliable chain movers. Everything cannot be about the big play. Miami killed Florida on the perimeter. Not sure I saw a WR screen in this game. Would love to see Sark lean on some short passing game. Even that is going to be tough as teams are going to play 2 safeties over the top all year and dare Texas to run the ball and we have an OL that is good for 3-4 penalties a game. Texas does not have an offense currently. It is just random plays being called in hopes of getting an explosive downfield occasionally.

Wasn't really late as much as the nickel blitz made it a dead play.
Arch is reading the nickel off the RPO. If the nickel bites down on the RB, Arch pulls it and throws it to Mosely on the slant. The nickel does indeed "bite down."
The problem is that the nickel was coming on a blitz regardless, so now he's directly in the throwing lane. Because of that, Arch can't throw the ball on time and has to get rid of it high.

There were a few other plays where the Florida defense read a screen attempt immediately and blew it up. Like the 3rd and 10 on the first drive where Arch had to throw it away. That was supposed to be a screen to Wisner that got sniffed out.

Baker wasn't what was killing us the most. The LG/C combo plus we kept allowing Florida to get a DE on our 195lb backs in pass pro. We could've made hay running off the edge on passing downs simply taking advantage of Florida's lack of gap integrity.

Both times we successfully got the edge in the run game were nullified by holding penalties

Agreed. If I am remembering correctly, the run wasn't supposed to pop outside(?), and you know how that goes. He just needs to know to let go when the defender turns to pursue. I will take a couple of those over barely touched A-gap rushers all game. In fact, put Baker at LG and he gets two holds per game as long as nothing else gets through. Lol.

Would putting the QB under center help the center at all to be able to actually block?

Was it really that amazing? We got Banks and Williams, Campbell has been a bust, Agbo was converted to TE before he transferred and Robertson/Hutson are try hard guys that have had limited success.

Williams leaving early really sucked, but we got Campbell for a 5th year instead and he's been OK, but definitely not a road grader and team leader needed right now.

As much as I wish Manning would be faster with his reads and post snap decisions, the OL is like 85% of the problem with the offense right now.

Since Sark has been here its been a problem. I will be honest for a minute here. I've been talking shit on this thread to a few people who were very loud last year. However, the reality is that we've sucked in the interior in the Sark era. Bijan and Rojo made their own yards. Brooks was good at that too. In pass pro the LG has been an issue for a long time too. Last year whenever we played quality fronts we couldn't get a push at all. Even Arizona St was stoning us up front, and blowing up our OZ with penetration. I'm beyond baffled because it's carried over so many different dudes. It simply hasn't mattered who we've put there the problems have persisted.

Once the Florida DC realized we were going to continue to run those slow developing routes and our OL couldn’t handle simulated pressures he spammed that button. Arch was in hero ball mode but he would ultimately be a better QB if he checked down more often and utilized Endries as well. Crazy we went from the check down king to Brett Favre. If OU is smart they won’t sit in a 3 high shell and instead send pressure packages at Arch and the OL. If Sark is smart he installs some quick passing plays and use the deep ball strategically. I don’t have very high hopes.

We recruit slow, fat, and unathletic OL under the guise of big humans and run a scheme that's almost impossible for them to execute consistently.

I hear that, but not many teams have athletic O-lines and they still get it done. You know how hard it is to run for only 15 to 30 yards? We've done that shit multiple times over the last couple years. It's not just big and slow. Some of it is scheme. Some of it is playcalling. Some of it is size and ability of the RBs. Last year we pretty much ran on any team that was big up front like us. If you were small and quick we struggled. This year started out the same. Even without Arch's yards, we ran for 128 yards at 4.7 a pop on OSU. Big on big we seem to be solid, but then the Florida game happened. We were supposed to be able to run on them like we did last year to the tune of 31 for 210. Ugh

It could also be a combo of technique, strength training vs recruiting big jags.  I know Paul Wadlington has been harping about the technique of the interior guys (and possibly S&C but im not too sure since our DL last few years were strong).

Can you elaborate because I feel like this is the biggest issue?  Who are the creative run schemers these days? I get that our guys are playing poorly, but I know some offenses would have them succeeding a lot more.

Whether we run Inside Zone or Outside Zone, when we play the smaller, quicker fronts their players seem to beat us to our spots. So for example with inside zone the linemen fire off the ball and depending where the D-line is lined up the linemen have certain assignments. There are usually more blockers than D-linemen. So for example there is a defensive tackle between the center and guard. At snap both the center and guard will fire off the ball and combo block the DT. Then the guard will leave the center solo and continue on to the second level to get hands on a linebacker. Now this is all determined by what type of front you are faced with. Sometimes the guard will be left to handle the DT while the center moves on to the second level.

Anywho, when we try to run it a few different things happen. Sometimes the linemen are slow getting to the second level and end up whiffing on the guy they needed to block, who shoots past them and blows the play up at the line of scrimmage. Sometimes the guard who is left 1v1 with a DT gets overpowered and pushed into the backfield causing the RB to have to stop his momentum and reroute, which gives the other defenders time to rally to the ball. So then what has to happen is the line has to maintain the doubleteam which allows the LBs to roam free and just scrape over the top of the play and meet the back wherever they are going.

If you just take some plays and watch the line its like Keystone cops. On any given play linemen are missing blocks, falling down, or just getting bullied backwards. Been going on for years now.

So let me give you an example below. We are going to run a variation of Inside Zone called Split Zone. In Split Zone the H back or Tight end fires across the formation to cut off the backside pursuit creating a natural cutback lane. Below is how it should be blocked vs the 5 man front Florida is in. You can see the TE at the top of the screen is supposed to come across the formation and kick out the backside DE. The OT has the DE. The LG has the DT in his B gap. The Center and RG are supposed to combo block the NT with the center trying to reach the playside LB. Then the RT and other TE combo block the DT in the C gap and then work their way to the OLB.

Screenshot(12).thumb.jpg.c191d23a1584d6aa4c8d0c75fe3d623b.jpg

But here is what actually happens below. The TE tiptoes his way across the formation and blocks the backside DE, but because he was slow there is no cutback alley to run through. He needs to fly across with some aggression and a sense of urgency. OT has his man handled. Surprisingly so does the LG. Here is where it gets bad. The Center/RG are struggling with the NT and never come off him to get to the playside LB. The RT/TE combo is having communication errors. They fire off to doubleteam. The TE appears to be pushing him across the face of his RT, helping the defender into the backfield. Meanwhile the two LBs are just sitting there on the hole sipping a cup of joe waiting. Nobody has touched them. A comedy of errors. No one ever really came off a doubleteam, and we don't have breaking arm tackles, make your own yards kind of backs. So play gets a yard or two.

Keystone cops. There are way worse but I'm lazy. There are many great run schemes out there. Gus Mahlzan comes to mind. But they recruit for their philosophy.

Can't believe how fundamentally broken our guard/center talent evaluation, recruiting and development has been under Sark/Flood.  The truth finally came out once Major/Conner left.  Campbell probably would be better if technique was better (as Paul Wadlington has been saying).

these S&C coaches all do mostly the same thing at this level.  their isn't some crazy secret sauce.  the issue is coaching technique/scheme and not recruiting 3 stars across the board because they are large humans.

I cannot rule out that the S&C is off, but I do not see the evidence for it. The DL has been really stout. The OL has been soft. If it was something simple like the team was not doing enough heavy squats, you would think it would show up across the board. You also have Stroh, who is as strong as an ox. I lean more to the techniques being taught or not taught on the OL

We have a lot of guys who look like Tarzan and play like Jane.  A big example would be Ryan Wingo in my opinion.  We need to play angrier and with more urgency.  We just look like passive assholes out there.

Arch also needs to make up his mind faster.  A few times he could've taken off and run out of bounds to stay ahead of the chains.

And yet that talentless, immobile quarterback put up 5 TDs on Florida. Meanwhile in Arch's best game, vs MSU, it was 14-6 with 16 seconds left to go in the 3rd quarter. This is the same MSU that Toledo put up 41, and Pig put up 58. They didn't win a single game in conference, and only two games last season.

This is rich coming from you. Lol. Anyone remember this Derka posted below? I do. Check the date. November 12, 2022.

and again, all y’all are doing is driving home how irrational and devoted y’all were/are to Dear Leader Quinn. your entire cult spent three years in denial, swearing that our walking deer in the headlights of a qb was carrying the rest of his all legaue, all american, high nfl draft pick teammates on his shoulders. total fealty to Dear Leader.

meanwhile, back in the land of the sane, absolutely none of us are lying to ourselves or trying to convince others that arch is actually doing great, even though in reality he’s playing with a supporting cast that’s maybe half as good as any of QE’s supporting casts. no mental gymnastics, no 500 page arguments about how your eyeballs are lying to you and arch is actually doing awesome, just calling a spade a spade and trying to dissect what’s going on.

you can’t erase the last three years, and you can’t expect to have any credibility with anyone outside of your cult after overdosing on kool aid for the most underachieving, disappointing, milquetoast magat qb we’ve ever had. you are the hypocrite, but like all cultists, you’ll only see what you want to see.
