I think part of the problem when the “everybody paid players” trope comes up is the general fan’s ignorance of the difference between $100 handshakes, which boosters have been doing at programs across

Man, that "retirement" didn't last long. Good get for Michigan. The rebuild might take a few seasons though.

Good hire. I wonder if this was already in the works when he "retired"

Whittingham will be interesting.

I remember thinking he would have been a good hire for us when we hired Sark...if he had been about 10 years younger.  And that was 4 years ago.  I guees ol' Wink will be the young guy now.

They are lucky to get Whittingham after such a shitshow...

Michigan fans are thrilled

They went after the polar opposite of the last 2 head coaches they had.  Surprisingly a smart move.  For their sake, I hope that their next few seasons are quiet and boring as shit.

I assume they threw a bunch of money for him to come for a few years to get things stable while they clean up and look for a long term coach. Good move for both if so

Gonna give him some credit and say he took the job just for the challenge.

This will probably work out very well for both. Whittingham is a good coach and his style will fit right in there. Utah and BYU are worried about which assistants (and maybe players) he will poach.

I bet the statue doesn’t even do anything useful like piss out nitro cold brew

That sales person from Anderson Renewal made a damn good pitch catching this person coming out of the grocery store.

I fully understand that sentence makes very little sense, but even my word salad isn't as fucked up as those pictures. Did you purposefully try to come up with the ugliest rooms possible? That makes Gundy's place look ALMOST tasteful.

Whittingham is going to be a very interesting choice.

He is 66, very old school on some things, hasn't been a huge fan of NIL, hasn't been known to crush recruiting, runs a dated offense that at times is very one dimensional and can be stopped easier than it should with the NFL talent they have had in the lines, and at times struggled in big games in conference.

Might be a home run, but I don't see much room between that or a big miss and not sure how much different this will be from the Rich Rod hire.

He needs a solid GM that runs in NIL/recruiting and a great offensive coordinator. He will rock it if he gets that

Maybe so, he still has some pretty strong tendencies that I am not sure translate well and I am curious about the staff he brings in at Michigan.

We know the DC isn't coming with him and does the bulk of the staff stay with Scalley or go to Ann Arbor.

Whittingham is a guy who has coached at Utah for ~ 30 years, was in Idaho 3-4 years before that, and I can't recall where he started coaching.

Harding would be a key bring and while he has been at Utah for 12 years he is from Ohio so maybe he follows to Ann Arbor.

You do know that Michigan is in the Big10? He'll be fine there.

You do know the top 3 teams in the Big 10 are not one dimensional nor going away any time soon.

Honestly. I've always kind of liked Michigan. I think it's because when I was a kid I was enamored with Charles Woodson (still am). Plus their unis and helmets are iconic af. I dunno, I'm hyped to play them, even if they're awful. Either them or ND and I'm happy. I don't hate ND like everyone else. I guess because I have a buddy who went there. I don't dislike or hate them, but it does bring me joy when they lose, except if it's aggy beating them.

Of course. My snide comment was assuming they'd get one of those "play no one worth a damn (except tosu) in 2026" Big 10 schedules. And I was wrong - in 2026-2027, they drew all 3 of those top teams - in addition to OU in 2026 and Texas in 2027. So - w/ or w/o Sherrone, they looked to have many losses in those years. 2028 will feature a more favorable schedule and the turnaround will be complete.

IIRC the Harbaugh era at Michigan opened with a quality loss to Utah. Everyone was optimistic because Michigan lost by less than the previous coach would have.

That was also basically the reaction when Saint Lou lost to Michigan in his first game in 1986, although that game had a controversial call.

Rich Rod had no support from Lloyd, and the Michigan Man crowd. I would think they learned something, but time will tell. All that said, Rich Rod and Hoke era was one of my favorite times at UM.

Family Affair with couple assistants. Behind early in the portal...

Michigan football coaching tracker: Introducing the staff in Ann Arbor

Story by Tony Garcia, Detroit Free Press 17h •

The new Michigan football coaching staff for 2026 is coming together quickly.

Newly hired coach Kyle Whittingham has identified the vast majority of his new staff, with just a few decisions left to make as of Friday, Jan. 2. Here are the new additions, the holdovers and leaders of the Wolverines ahead of spring practice in just a couple of months.

Whittingham arrives from Utah after 32 years in Salt Lake City – the past 21 as coach of the Utes – and much of his staff is also on the way from the Beehive State, along with a few other additions from around the country.

Offensive coordinator: Jason Beck (from Utah)

In 2025 at Utah, Beck led an offense that ranked among the best in the nation. Utah was second in FBS in rushing offense (266.3 yards per game), fourth in total offense (482.9 yards) and fifth in scoring offense (41.2 points per game). Utah was also third in the NCAA in third-down conversion rate (52.6%) and total first downs (331) and 12th in red-zone scoring percentage. Utah had five players earn All-Big 12 honors, led by All-American and Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year Spencer Fano.

“It is an honor to join Coach Whittingham at the University of Michigan,” Beck said in a statement released Friday. “I am eager to work with this exceptional offensive staff as we work together to build, develop, and support our student-athletes. My family and I are excited about this opportunity to become part of the Michigan community and the Wolverine family. Go Blue!”

Defensive coordinator: Jay Hill (from BYU)

Hill came from BYU, where he led a top-25 scoring defense each of the past two seasons. In 2024, the Cougars led the nation with 22 interceptions. In 2025, BYU finished in the top 25 in seven categories: No. 5 in red-zone scoring defense (70.4%), No. 7 in interceptions (17), No. 10 in defensive TDs (three), No. 14 in turnovers forced (24), No. 19 in third-down conversion percentage (33%), No. 21 in scoring defense and No. 25 in passer rating allowed (116.97). Hill also has head coaching experience, leading FCS Weber State for nine seasons (2014-22) where he guided the Wildcats to a 68-39 overall record during that time, leading the program to four Big Sky championships.

“It is an absolute honor for me and my family to join the Michigan Wolverines!” Hill said in a statement released Friday. “We are so excited to join Coach Whittingham, his staff and look forward to building relationships with these great players. The Michigan program is deep with history and tradition that I look forward to honoring. The opportunity to develop great young men on and off the field and ultimately win championships at Michigan is something we are dedicated to do. I can’t wait to get started! Go Blue!”

Running backs coach: Tony Alford (retained)

Alford led the Wolverines running back room the past two years and is staying on under Whittingham. Alford is one of U-M's ace recruiters, having landed five-star running back Savion Hitere, the top back in the nation, in the most recent cycle. He has also helped land and develop several star backs, including Kalel Mullings, Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall.

Wide receivers coach: Micah Simon (from Utah)

Simon comes to Michigan to coach wide receivers – his fourth program in as many seasons. A former wideout at BYU (2015-19), Simon joined Syracuse's staff in 2022 as an offensive analyst, where he first connected with Beck. He then went to Northern Colorado (2023) and New Mexico (2024) to lead the wide receivers (also under Beck) before he joined Utah's staff last season.

Tight ends coach: Freddie Whittingham (from Utah)

Kyle's brother joins U-M after spending the past 10 seasons as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator. Before that, he was the Utes' director of player personnel for four seasons. Tight ends have starred for Utah for several seasons, including Brant Kiuthe, a four-time all-conference honoree and Dalton Kincaid, who became a first-round NFL draft pick and is now a standout for the Buffalo Bills.

Offensive line coach: Jim Harding (from Utah)

Harding has been one of the most consistent offensive line coaches in the nation and joins U-M after leading Utah the past dozen years. In 2025, he coached a pair of first-team All-Big 12 offensive linemen in Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu, both of whom are projected to be 2026 first-round draft picks. He has ties to the Midwest, too, growing up in Maumee, Ohio, starring at Toledo and coaching at Troy Athens High School (2005-08).

Defensive line coaches: Lou Esposito (retained), Lewis Powell (from Utah)

Michigan retained defensive line coach Lou Esposito to the same position – like Alford, he has led one of the most productive units on the team and also been an elite recruiter, including this past cycle where he landed Michigan's most renowned group. Michigan is also reportedly bringing in Lewis Powell, Utah's defensive line coach who will focus on the EDGEs in Ann Arbor and serve as run game coordinator, per ESPN's Pete Thamel. Powell spent 11 years in Utah, including 10 as defensive line coach.

Linebackers coach: Alex Whittingham

The son of Kyle arrives from the NFL, where he has been a defensive assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs since 2018. That included a stint as assistant defensive line coach in 2025, though he worked with the linebackers from 2020-23, a span in which the Chiefs went to the Super Bowl and consistently ranked in the top half of the league in scoring defense.

Secondary coach: Jernaro Gilford

Whittingham reaches to Provo for Gilford, who has been the cornerbacks coach at BYU for the past decade, and added defensive passing game coordinator to his duties in 2025. The Cougars defense ranked 50th in passing yards allowed per game (209.7) this season, though it was 23rd in completion percentage allowed (57.5) and 25th in passer rating allowed (116.98).

Special teams coordinator: Kerry Coombs

Coombs was hired by former Michigan coach Sherrone Moore less than a week before his own firing. He coached the Wolverines in their Cheez-It Citrus Bowl loss to Texas on Dec. 31, and his unit looked exceptional. True freshman Andrew Marsh had 155 total return yards, more than U-M had in any two games combined this past season. Whittingham said he anticipated keeping "two or three" staffers on board from the previous regime and those three appear to be set now.

Positional assistant coaches

Michigan brought in Koy Detmer Jr. (Utah) to coach quarterbacks and Marques Hagans (Penn State) to help with wide receivers. There could be a few more assistants and analysts added to the mix in the coming days

Edited by LTtxfan
New site editing sucks 🙄

We presume they're gonna bring all the good UT players they can? Michigan basically bought out another school and moved them in. It's a good play.
