Hmm

Former Texas Longhorns point guard D.J. Augustin, a 14-year NBA veteran who played parts of two seasons for the Houston Rockets, is joining the Rockets front office, he confirmed to the Chronicle on Thursday.

Augustin last played for the Rockets in 2022 and retired from the NBA in 2024. A native of New Orleans, Augustin relocated to Houston when he was in high school because of Hurricane Katrina. He played two college seasons at Texas — one alongside Kevin Durant, a rumored trade target for the Rockets this summer — before he was selected with the ninth overall pick of the 2008 NBA draft by the Charlotte Bobcats.

Can the coach of a NBA team be traded?

The answer to that question is: yes.

In fact, there have been five times in the past when a NBA coach has been traded, and some of these trades involved some of the biggest names in the NBA coaching fraternity.

1. Mike Dunleavy, Sr.

Dunleavy, Sr. was traded from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Milwaukee Bucks for two second-round picks.

The Lakers were looking to make a change in the post-Magic Johnson era, while the Bucks were looking for a strong head coach.

2. Pat Riley.

Pat Riley left the New York Knicks for the Miami Heat in 1995.

The NBA investigated the Heat and Riley for tampering, and eventually decided that the Knicks should be compensated with a first-round pick, as well as $1 million cash.

3. Stan Van Gundy.

In 2007, Van Gundy was traded from the Miami Heat to the Orlando Magic.

The agreed-upon price for Van Gundy was two 2nd round picks in the 2008 NBA Draft.

4. Doc Rivers.

In 2013, five years after leading the Boston Celtics to a title, Doc Rivers was traded from the Celtics to the Los Angeles Clippers for a 2015 1st-round pick.

Despite having a loaded team and Doc Rivers as their coach, the Clippers were unable to win a title.

5. Jason Kidd.

In 2014, the Brooklyn Nets traded Jason Kidd to the Milwaukee Bucks for two second-round picks.

That list isn't complete. Stan Albeck was traded by the Spurs to the Nets for Fred Roberts, cash and a second round pick. And why did they have to throw shade at Doc Rivers?

At the same point in his career, Shai was hitting 50% of his shots and 40% from three.  He was also 2:1 on assist to turn over with 6 assists a game (actually, he’s superior at pretty much every statistical category).

Haliburton is pretty similar (50-40-80, 4:1 assign to turnover, more steals, etc.

If anything, the comparison should serve as evidence that Green isn’t poised to be on their level.

I appreciate you sharing but I only made it through the first 20 minutes because Sam Vecenie is a good reporter but a terrible listen and talking NBA salary cap holds is the the kind of discussion only an autistic masochist would enjoy.  Cliff notes?

Also, I'm only interested in one subject--how can the Rockets upgrade at SG.

What a bunch of nonsense. He is a leader and team player. He mentors a ton of young players and hoops with them in the offseason. He's respected and looked up to by almost every NBA player. Stop reading NBA twitter, those fans are psychos.

This Rocket team is literally missing one piece: a go-to scorer. He's the perfect piece for the next couple of years.

My main takeaways from Game Theory’s Rockets Offseason episode:

- Must decline FVV’s option. It will save the team $13 million, and provide salary flexibility this summer. Don’t think he can get $30 million a year on the open market. Duh, but it’s good to hear the national people concur with us.

- Should attempt to sign Jabari and Tari each to 4 years $80 million contracts.

- If they can jettison Landale and Holliday it’ll free up $16-18 million. Their expiring deals have value in trades.

- Barely mentioned Durant.

- Think it’ll take Amen and/or Segun and lots of picks to get Giannis. The goddamn lucky ass Spurs have serious leverage because they hold the rights to Harper.

- While conceding he’d be expensive, they think Trey Murphy III is exactly what the Rockets need. I’ll agree this the smart/stealth move to improve the team.

- They think running it back is probable/acceptable.

No concern that Murphy is getting 15 shots a game with a bad Pelican team and it might not be so easy to get him 800+ shots a year with the Rockets?

Windhorst sure thinks it’s unlikely there’s a trade market for Giannis. He’s likely to stay in Milwaukee

Saw that today. From the outside looking in, Giannis just feels like a really loyal guy. The Bucks scouted him almost exclusively and took a chance on him. The organization repaid his loyalty by getting him a ring.

I think he wants to play out the string and see if the Bucks can pull off a miracle and trade Dame this offseason. That’s really the only way they could possibly improve.

Also Thank God the Spurs probably won’t get Giannis.

KD was the best player on those Warrior teams

I also disagree that he is only out for himself.  He has answered the bell again and again for Team USA, including single-handedly winning a gold medal in 2021.

Jabari ain't going for 4/80. This needs to stop. There is no world where he locks himself into $20/MM per year. Tari, maybe (cause injury).

Yeah, Game Theory said both were unlikely to accept, but that’s what they’d offer. Said 4 years $95-105 million was the sweet spot for Jabari.

That's about what they gave up for Fox, so maybe they are just spoiled now? I don't see KD going there though, they still have a lot of questions marks. He needs a surefire contender, or to go somewhere good for so cheap that they give up nothing and become a contender by gaining him.

Exactly. Durant has all the leverage here. All he has to say is sure, you can trade me to team x but I’m not signing an extension. There’s not much trade value for a one year rental. That’s pretty much what Fox did in Sacramento and why the spurs got him so relatives cheaply. And that’s why spurs fans think they are going to get him for Vassell, Barnes, and the number 14 pick if that’s where he wants to be.

The Suns owner isn't going to give him away for that. He's a stubborn guy, I think he would rather go down with the ship in this case rather than accept the pupu platter of middling players and a 14th overall draft pick.

I think others can outbid that easily if he goes to auction, and with less future financial obligations.

I wonder if the 76ers are going to try to send PG+McCain+#3 to the Suns for him. Yeah PGs contract sucks, but maybe you can sell them on him rebounding, plus 2 cheap young talents. After all, this is the team that consented to trading for Beal. Dumping that PG contract in the process would be a huge win for Philly.

He'd be walking on a team with Wemby, Castle, Fox, CP3, and the #2 pick (Harper?). Not a bad crew to roll with.

That's a great trade for maximizing the value of those Phoenix picks the Rockets own.

i haven't really thought too much about the draft as i had been under the assumption that the Rockets would be trading the pick, but since we're only two weeks away and it feels like there is a stronger chance they keep the pick than I had previously thought, i figured why not dive in a little bit?

IMO, there are 7 guys who will defintely be off the board when the Rockets pick: Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper, Ace Bailey, VJ Edgecomb, Tre Johnson, Jeremiah Fears, and Kon Knueppel.  So I am not even considering them.  Amongst the guys that could still be on the board when the Rockets pick, I think I am most intrigued by Noa Essengue, Kasparas Jakucionis, and Khaman Maluach.  Essengue and Maluach would help out defensively (I'm especially intrgiued by Essengue as a perimeter defender), while Jackucionis would provide offensive playmaking.  After those three, I'm also interested in Cedric Coward, Derik Queen, Carter Bryant, and Egor Demin.  At this point, I'd be fine if the Rockets drafted any one of those 7 with the #10 pick.

The Rockets have a ton of future draft picks and swaps available. I think they should shop 10 around with a future first and see if they can jump from 10 to 5/6 or so and get a guard like Tre Johnson. Would be nice to see them be aggressive in the draft and go get a guy they really want.

i'd be fine with trading #10 this year and a future pick to move up.

ESPN reporting: The Phoenix Suns and Kevin Durant’s business partner, Rich Kleiman, are sorting through trade options - with interested teams mainly featuring Houston, San Antonio, Minnesota, Miami and New York.

The Knicks would be something. They don't have many assets to send out, so it would have to be KAT for KD plus a few picks. Not sure that even works with salaries and both being well into the tax. Probably need a third team to take on some salary to make it possible.

Minny sending Randle for KD would be a huge upgrade for them. I don't think that salary works either.

Miami? Why? KD doesn't make them a contender.

Houston and SA make sense from an assets standpoint. Much easier for them to make salary work and add lots of future picks if the players are meh. Still it only 1 year of KD, unless he agrees to an extension as part of the deal.

I'm surprised Dallas isn't in the mix. They want to win now! Send Kyries expiring contract for KD plus some future assets and picks. They should have a ton from trading Luka...

I've seen realistic sports writers put a fair value on KD based on his age, injury risk, and only one year left on his contract, but there are more who think Houston should give way too much. ESPN mocked 5 trade proposals yesterday and had Houston giving up #10, the 2027 PHX pick, Reed, Cam, Brooks, and Londale. The other offers they pitched seem like less capital than what they have Houston giving up. Minnesota offers Gobert plus spares, Spurs offer Devin Vassell, Harrison Barnes, and #14 pick, and Knicks offer OG Anunoby, Mitchell Robinson.

I don't think I'd give up Reed + multiple good assets; maybe tell them to pick two from Cam and the two first rounders plus salary filler. Can FVV be traded prior to declining the team option to serve as filler...like include him, then PHX declines the option, then FVV is a free agent (and could re-sign with Houston)? Or Jalen + Brooks?

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/44108357/kevin-durant-trade-proposals-four-deals-suns-star

Posted

FVV option must be picked up to trade him. At 44m, I don't think the Suns will find anyone willing to trade for Fred during the season, so they would be stuck with him for 1 year.  Booker, Beal and Fred is not a championship team, so the other assets they get back would need to be considerable.

However, compare that to Rudy's contract, or Vassell, both have significantly more future money guaranteed. Neither is going to be a trade asset that returns more picks. FVV is at least a one and done option for them.

The other thing about this trade is that you may need to give KD a 2 year $122m extension as part of the trade. If that's the case, that would be problematic for the team's cap situation, unless hes willing to take a moderate discount. Maybe he agrees to 2 years 90m? I know it's not 73 win Golden State, so he may not be willing to drop 30% in value, but he's 36, and the extension is for his 37/38 years. That's a huge liability given his injury history.

If that extension is part of the trade, do you still do it?

Just when I thought Brooks’ contact sucked, I looked up Devin Vassell’s deal.

The Suns should be placed in a conservatorship if Ishbia accepts Vassell, Barnes, and the 14th pick for KD.
