we already paid Bregman.

we may not pay him AGAIN.

letting Springer and Correa walk were the right moves.

The guy we should have paid was Gerrit Cole.

The point is championships.  I care who is in the jersey but not the expense of winning.

I don’t really care what the budget is as long as it’s spent smartly.  Tampa usually runs a payroll 25% of the Astros and wins a lot of games (and would be really good if their generational talent signed to a team friendly decade-long contract wasn’t a pedophile).

At this point, most teams in the MLB are feeder organizations for a handful of teams.  Their superstars will end up as Dodgers, Yankees, Mets or Phillies eventually.

and those 4 teams have won 1 real WS in the past 15 years.

I reckon the Dodgers are about to go on a run.

this offseason moving forward, I agree.

Hah!  You and I both know trying to run a business losing money today because you *think* you might make more tomorrow sucks.

I don’t begrudge Crane wanting to break-even or even make a profit.  He needs a war time consigliere, though.  I guess we’ll see if Brown can be that.

The Yankees would have just paid him more. Plus, he really wanted to be a Yankee.

Not signing George and Correa were the right decisions.

Bregman got one extension. Do you want to sign another one for more than six years?

Tucker is going to get a ten year deal. Do you want the Astros to do that?

Saving money to sign chuy and lilshep. It was a handshake agreement but news should break on thier deals once tucker is traded

No players taken off our rosters via Rule V

There will be a very specific clause in LilShep contract

We are getting our asses handed to us these Winter meetings aren’t we?

Neris is not currently on the roster

Insiders and mlb radio saying Bregman is next and close to signing somewhere.

Neris is a free agent and the Julio Rodriguez we picked up is a minor-league pitcher.

yes, Bregman can walk, and then trade Framber for Correa

We don't do long term deals. That's why.

Astros everyday 2025 lineup likely to only return about half the players from 2024.  Bregman will sign with the Yankees, Tucker and at least one of Meyers/McCormick/Pena will be traded.  Singleton will be DFA or back in a bench role.  Now the other chips should fall in the next 48 hours. If Houston doesn’t make at least 2 very significant moves before end of day Friday it will appear very likely Dana Brown and the Astros were not proactive about the offseason and were caught off guard by the market and by Bregman signing elsewhere.

I'm OK with that.

I don't think Pena's going anywhere, though.

Pena is cheap, they will keep him as long as they can.

I think winning is as high on the priority list as it's always been. They just aren't going to get hamstrung by long term deals to do it.

My pipe dream is they move Pena to make room to get Correa back.

Am I correct that Correa is essentially 4 yrs / $134M at this point?

If so, I would way rather have that than 6+ years of Bregman overpaid and only one remaining year of Framber.

EDIT: He'd be a great 3B (has done it already for WBC), and it would probably prolong his prime / reduce injury risk

Yes, and Correa also has several vesting options that are very affordable.  His contract is not really a negative for any team with a little payroll flexibility.  I do think he has a NTC so that limits which teams he’d go to.  My guess is he will only go to a team that will play him at SS, which is why I think Houston would trade Pena if they got Correa, but all this is a pipe dream.

I like Carlos, but he's injured way too often. Pena plays every day.

He's a shitty hitter every day too.

Just like the talking heads on MLB Radio keep saying......nothing is fucked here.

Astros are still a contender if they will just trade Tucker and Framber.  We aren't resigning either of those guys (and frankly I don't want to).  Frambers market got better once this Fried LHP deal just went down.  Tucker is going to get close to 500M contract.

Even if Bregman walks....if you make the right trades we could probably have a better lineup than we did for the majority of this past season.

I am not blind and get Tucker is a great player, but we were 48-30 without him last season when he was out with him injury.   Framber has been shitty the majority of his postseason career except for 2022 and we keep running him out there as a 1 or 2 in series.  Trade them.

With a higher WAR in 2024 than Carlos Correa.

Stop gaslighting for our piece of shit of an owner. Fuck Crane. Losing every one of your top players is a fucking travesty. Jerry Jones 2.0. He thinks he can use the same formula to get back on top with fucking Dana Brown who doesn’t have half the brain power and savvy of Luhnow. Get ready to suck.

Hopefully crane has fallen out of love with meyers and Chaz. Give green light to trade both of them

I’m Ok if they signed Tucker at his full value. I’m OK if they trade Tucker and get back some younger major league ready talent. I’m not OK just running the same team from last year out there and letting him walk for essentially nothing.

This isn’t the 2019-2021 Astros where talent could walk because you had guys in the minors ready to step up.

Two championships and four pennants is more than I ever expected as a 53 year old lifelong Astros fan.

It will take a whole lot more than not signing Springer, Correa, Bregman, and Tucker for me to turn on Jim Crane.

This was the most likely scenario before they apparently came to their senses in the last day.

The Astros had the #3 to #7 highest payroll last year depending which site you look at, and are sitting in the top 10 for 2025 before resigning Bregman or whatever they end up doing. It's not like we have the A's, Rays, or Pirates ownership. They shipped prospects to get Verlander back in 2023 and to get Kikuchi last season, and haven't restocked the shelves. Crane burned himself with the Abreu and Montero contracts, but all of us were thinking Abreu was going to be crushing a lot of dingers to the Crawford boxes when he signed. It would be nice if Crane admitted he made a mistake and spent an extra $30m more than he planned to in 2025 to offset the dead money of those two contracts.

Mega contracts in baseball are never worth it. You'll get some good years and some bad years, but you'll be paying top dollar every year. By the end, it's just a money sink that really only NYY, NYM, and LAD seem to be able to afford.

George is owed $50M for his final two years in TOR, I'm sure they'd dump that back for almost nothing in return.

So do that, tell Bregman to take the hometown discount, and get the whole band back together with a Correa trade.  I bet Yuli would be glad to come hang out for the league minimum too.

2019 was my favorite squad of all-time, not really a close second.  Tucker and Framber both sucked on that team anyway, so all the more season to trade them now and protect the reunion vibes.
