Fasting, even intermittent fasting, increases my GERD unacceptable amounts. Any suggestions?

work out. And treat your GERD in the meantime.

I wish we could combine this one with the longevity thread, but I am a thread minimalist.
I read these two more than the for-real fitness thread.

We already had a fitness weight loss thread and an old sucks thread I guess I’m in poor health is a thread we need and we will all be there eventually but I like a thread that’s about optimizing health not struggling with ailments or what pharma are you taking.

and I’ve been there so it’s sometimes needed.

I think we could probably merge all three threads.  They may have been intended to provide three discrete discussions -- exercise, weight loss, and longevity.  But I think all of those overlap on the broader discuss of physical wellness.

I like to hear about folks in my general demographic (50 years) finding different ways to stay physically active and healthy, with both exercise and diet, and in particular how those lifestyles are geared toward extending our life span.  And I don't need to lose weight, though my metabolism is nowhere near what it used to be so I do need to be more conscious of the amount and quality of calories I put into my body.  For those who are on a weight loss mission, I enjoy reading about and cheering on their progress.

You can still do that across threads. Once upon a time I lost considerable weight but I will say talking about weight loss when you don’t need to lose 50lbs isn’t helpful for those who are trying to lose a lot of weight and might even discourage them. There are tons of health topics like that. There’s a reason different topics related to health came to be. But idgaf in the end. Whatever it becomes it becomes.

Just a note to those on the fence about joining a gym:  Check your health insurance plan.

My plan through BCBS is offering basic gym membership at places like 24 hr, Crunch, and the Y for $28/mo.  Seniors are free through the Silver Sneakers program.  Worth checking out.

I'm not fat, but I live pretty hard.  I'm a big drinker, a smoker, and I work out of my truck most days (insurance adjuster and contractor).  It's been catching up to me.

I heard an advertisement on the radio the other day about Craft Body Scans - a couple's deal for heart and lung scans for $150 for both.  The are CT scans.  I booked the appointment and did the scan last week.   Oh, the $150 promo is real, but it's also a 90 minute time-share type of sales meeting.  They want you to buy your next 10 years of scans for only $275/month!  NOT!

Anyways, I got my scan results back.   My lungs are clear and all good.  My heart not so much.

I did enough google research to be able to read and understand it.  It sounds about right.  Drinking, smoking, fast food, sitting in truck, then desk work.  That will make placque in your widow maker arteries.

I trick myself into saying I'm active and healthy because I look thin and fit and I climb around on roofs all day.  I don't get winded playing baseketball or working hard.  I have a gym membership but I just use that for the show muscles.

Anyways, I booked a meeting with a cardiologist based on these results.   He can't see me until 9/22.

So what is a heart healthy diet and lifestyle anyways?  Sounds like the oppisite of my lifestyle.

Meh, my buddy had one of those scans done and it said all clear. 3 months later he dropped dead with a 95% occlusion of his LAD. Luckily for him he did it in front of four paramedics that also had access to a defibrillator. I’m also of the opinion that a lot of other factors in your life are going to catch up to you long before limited exposure a handful of times to radiation will.

Not trying to be an asshole. Please consider smoking cessation programs. They work and will save your life.

So did he die or not?

To Herbie's point, I felt all great and shit when my CT score was zero about 7 years ago.  But then I read more and discovered that basically it can provide only a small amount of useful information about your heart health and other testing is needed to give you a full picture and discover any ticking timebombs.  I'm way overdue to see a cardiologist (age 50), and am trying to get in before the end of the year.  Not because I'm seeing any signs of something off, but I have some heart history in the family; in particular three men in the chain above me who weren't obese and didn't smoke.

100% right.   There are other diagnostic tools that give a more complete picture, including distinguishing the type of plaque and risk there-in.

Calcium score is a good start and especially for someone young to establish as baseline.

I've done the Cleerly scan among other things on top of the calcium scan.

Stop smoking and drink less.

Since you aren't overweight I don't think any other single or combination of lifestyle changes would come close to the benefit you'd get from those two things.
