Yeah but how many followers does the meteor have? That’s all that matters in the outcome of things.

Shit, we could make a list:

  • woke feminist
  • successful female
  • successful person
  • someone with talent

The only thing that doesn't shock me? Lively is white.

Owens has been on the Lively hate train, which is a transparent but unfortunately successful tactic for expanding her audience and introducing new people to right wing propaganda.

What's ironic is that the guy she's defending (Baldoni) is a brown-looking non-Christian Italian guy in a man bun who is extremely woke and got awards for being a feminist and having a feminist podcast.

I think Owens wants to slowly convert him to being an anti-woke content creator, so they can hold him out as an example of why it's a mistake for men to embrace wokeness.

Prosecutors say suspect committed arson, tried extorting billionaire family in Highland Park by threat of kidnapping

Quote

Prosecutors say a suspect committed arson at a billionaire family’s home in Highland Park and then threatened to kidnap their daughter if they did not provide him $80,000 in cash.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said a garbage can was lit on fire in the driveway of a house in the 200 block of Roger Williams Avenue in Highland Park around 3:25 a.m. on April 28.

The garbage can was filled with paint cans and other flammable accelerants. It burned to the ground and damaged the home’s lawn.

Quote

“If you fail to comply we will take [daughter’s name] hostage and she won’t make graduation, at that point we will ask for more money. If you guys are prepared to spend a hundred million to ruin the lives of Ms. Lively and her family we are sure you can spare a few for your daughter,” the message said.

A day later, an unknown number sent text messages to the family’s daughter with the same information that was sent to Jessica Sarowitz.

Another message was sent on Thursday to the daughter identifying her college and the address of her sorority house where she frequently visits, Katris said.

The researcher analyzed the Top 500 tweets about the topic on a right-leaning platform. Of course they’re all pro Baldoni. Everything on Twitter these days is inorganic and not an accurate representation of the general public’s sentiment on an issue. It’s like doing an analysis of the top Surly tweets about aggy and seeing that the overwhelming majority of posters love Texas. How about an analysis of the top posts on Bluesky?

In his analysis of the top 500 tweets on the subject, he found that support is overwhelmingly pro-Baldoni – sharing hashtags like #BlakeLivelyIsALiar and #JusticeForJustinBaldoni – “by a ratio of 1:150 to 1:300, depending on which metric you use”. Judging by the age of the accounts and the number of times they have posted, “I would estimate more than 80% of pro-Justin Baldoni posts are inorganic,” Chen says.

Look man, it really fucking sucks that Candace Owens and Megyn Kelly are on the right side of this story. They're in it for all the wrong reasons, fuck both of them. @MrBig makes a valid point above about X. We clearly know that X boosts right wing accounts and engagement. The fact that a "researcher" would use that app as proof is ridiculous . And any X bot activity is probably being pushed by someone involved with Owens or Kelly if I had to guess.

This whole drama is really being played out on YouTube. The content creators there are real people, and most are not overtly political. They just peddle in celeb gossip and reality TV shit. They are posting videos daily (sometimes multiple) with updates and reading through any updated legal documents that are released. And 95% of them believe Lively is the one in the wrong. The "Team Justin" stuff is fucking stupid, unfortunately that is the binary world we live in now.

I stopped paying close attention to this story, as it seems pretty clear based on evidence presented that Lively acted in bad faith from the beginning. Now just waiting for a resolution. But I do find it fascinating how lazy Jezebel and people like Taylor Lorenz have been. They assume if Candace Owens and Megyn Kelly and other right-wingers are "siding" with Baldoni, that the opposite must be true and that Lively is the victim. And they've gotten it wrong in this particular case.

Say what you will about social media, but YouTube is where the truth-tellers of our time share their voice.  They definitely have no motivation to push a certain angle on a story if they thought it would draw more views and likes from incels and Trumpers who have latched onto this story when absolutely no one else cares.  I've been saying for years that YouTube celebrity gossip channel hosts are the Walter Cronkites of our modern era.

I'd love to see Chen analyze the remaining non-bot posts, across platforms. I'd bet a lot of money it's still pro-Baldoni by a lot, and the bots are merely parroting what it thinks people want to see.

If you don't want to take the time to truly understand the case, I completely understand. This particular drama is bullshit compared to what's going on the world.

But you're proving my point. People are lazily assuming stuff and getting it wrong, because everything now is being viewed through a political lens.

What makes you think I was being defensive? I was simply responding to your comment with a response of my own about how I think Twitter is filled with right-wing trash so it shouldn’t be cited as a credible source for research.

I don’t base my opinions on what other people think. I’ve seen the evidence and read the lawsuits and I have enough courage to side with Justin Baldoni even though Candace Owens & Megyn Kelly (who are MAGA minions and are full of shit-which belongs in CR) side with him too. I don’t just follow blindly and side with Blake Lively because MAGA (who holds political views completely opposite from my own) dislikes her too.

I don't have an opinion one way or the other about the facts of this civil matter. It's entirely he said/she said and until there's evidence in court, pretending like any of it is significant seems like a giant waste of anyone's time. I've taken a very slight interest in it due to the intersection of media and law. Also I recoil at the misogyny on display and there's been been quite a lot of it in this thread - which quite honestly I've read/seen far more about the case in this thread than I have anywhere else. I find a little joy in yanking some chains when I come across a conspicuous article. You came across as defensive to me because while 80 percent of the posts on xitter are inorganic you were talking about bluesky as though it's even comparable, and the post you quoted from is from a relatively large pop culture account for bluesky, but as you could plainly see it has only ~49 likes. It seemed a bit incongruous to me. Trolls don't get the same traction on bluesky - they can't artifically boost their reach there as they so easily can on xitter. Perhaps you're unaware. Respectfully though, from what I've seen here siding with Baldoni takes no courage.

Also, if you're not in the Cloak Room, I'm as anti-Trump/MAGA as they come. And the right wing grifters have always infuriated me, Owens and Kelly included.

I wasn't accusing you of being an incel or a Trump fan, Hank.  Just pointing out that the sources you are citing are every bit as biased as anything on any other platform.  Their motivation is clicks/money rather than political, but there is still bias.  In this case, the folks chasing this story largely fall into a particular political group, but the YouTubers don't care about that.  They just want engagement on their channels, no matter where it comes from.

The worst place to look for information about anything involving litigation is social media, including YouTube.  The next worst place to look is any court filings.   No one who is not directly involved will ever know the truth of this situation, or any other similar situation.  That's just not how it works. Anyone who has been through a divorce or even business litigation knows that what is presented in court or disseminated to the public rarely reflects what happened.  It's just two competing lies banging against each other until something shakes loose.

FWIW, and unfortunately, as far as I'm concerned, I know a great deal about this situation.  I have avoided discussing the particulars or what I think about it in this thread for a reason.

Sadly this is true in a lot of different ways. Despite all evidence people will be against or pro something because a politician or political "influencer" (I am including both the social and main stream media in the term influencer here.) sides one way or the other on a topic. Even prior to the "influencers" picking a side often times the masses will pick their side prior to the the influencers. Good example is this issue and the Anthony/Metcalf situation right here on Surly. Unfolds here the same way it typically does in the bigger world and we are largely a university degree holding group as opposed to under educate folks. I see some of it other threads as well and it its not limited to Daily Texan threads. (The Last of Us thread in Movie)

I certainly think it a global issue and not limited to the US. However, I am of the opinion that our historical 2 Party system allows for easier binary siding with "Team" than other countries in a broad stroke.

Don't know how to fix it other than the hope of pointing it out might make some tiny minority of folks reflect on that reality and approach things differently... but hope is a dangerous thing.
