Kentucky Road Trip - Horses, Bourbon, and Football

Recommended Posts

Starting a thread for game in Lexington October 18th. A few of us mentioned going on the main Surly Tailgate thread. Assuming there is no official Surly tailgate, we may do something smallish if enough people are interested. Still working through logistics.

FYI - UK made the Texas game Parents' Weekend and Homecoming. I guess because it overlaps with the horse races. Hotels are in short supply.

Fun things to do Friday or Saturday before game:

Keeneland Fall Meet https://www.keeneland.com/

Beautiful horse race track that the locals really get into. Great tailgating outside the track. You'll probably find more students here than a UK football game. The races sell out. Tickets go on sale August 19.

Kentucky Bourbon Trailhttps://kybourbontrail.com/

Enough said.

Visit a Horse Farmhttps://www.visitlex.com/listing/gainesway-farm/7896/    https://www.visitlex.com/listing/visit-horse-country/7324/

There are several to choose from, but not all are open to the public. Link is to Gainsway which is spectacular. If nothing else, drive through horse country. If you're flying into SDF (Louisville) exit onto Old Frankfort Pike Road from I64.

Horse Auctionshttps://www.fasigtipton.com/locations/kentucky

If you are around on Monday after the game, the Fasig-Tipton Sales start. Always fun to watch someone spend $1M on a one year old horse.

If you are flying into Louisville (Southwest added non-stop flights from AUS) visit Muhammad Ali or Louisville Slugger museums.

Numerous breweries, golf courses, and hiking trails if that's your thing.

And an error from the other page...

Blue GRASS Parkway is a relatively short but fantastic longer way in from Louisville but an incredible drive.

Since I'm on about cars, it is a hike from Lexington but the Corvette Museum is down in Bowling Green. You could hit it on the way from Nashville to Lexington if you choose to visit Nashville on the trip.

If you want to make a longer trip out of it Nashville is about a 3 hr drive to Lexington. Unfortunately, Titans are playing away that Sunday. There will be far more flight options into Nashville. Since I'm on flight options Cincinnati is 2 hrs so its a 3rd option. All 3 will be scenic drives but Nashville and Cincinnati are largely Interstate to Lexington.

Yes, recommend Blue Grass Parkway if you have the time. Old Frankfort Pike is good if coming from Louisville and are short on time. Taking Old Frankfort Pike is about the same as driving I-64 all the way to Lex.

Do you think many people will be flying in from Australia?

Kentucky is know for bourbon, horses and hillbilly hijinx which is two thirds of the fuel that drives Aussies. So, invariably.

One of us is wrong.

I looked at the weekend before. Titans play New England that Sunday in Nashville. Not really sure why you felt compelled to express a simple error that way, but you do you.

No ill will intended.  I was leaving it open for me to be wrong because I’d thought differently for some time.

We’ll be staying in Georgetown and driving down to Lexington the day of. I’ll be with a group of 6-8 so I have some cats to herd to determine what game day will look like for us. On Thursday and Friday I anticipate there will be some time spent on Horses and Bourbon.

The details are TBD.

Fair, no offense take nor ill will perceived. One of us was wrong.

I floated out the following and I'll put it here for thought.

I've previously found spaces in restaurants/bars for groups as part of a "tailgate" plan. Typically, less sports bar more local bar/restaurants tend to be more amenable to non-home team fans and affordable.

In short, find a place we can all meet in the 11-2 range, eat some lunch, watch early games and have libations prior to heading to a actual tailgate closer to the stadium or wherever. I'm not at all tied to the idea, but have reached out to get an idea of price for space and potentially food. I'll report back cost here and gage interest from folks traveling in the thread.

I plan to go to that one. Family that lives up there came down for the UK game in Austin last year. I'll fly to Louisville ad we'll drive over. Excited for this one since I haven't been to Lexington in 18 years.

Also, surly tailgate in Lexington or no?

@Longboard Horn

There will not be an official Surly tailgate at Kentucky, at least at this point there aren't any plans for one. @TxEx84 created this one to provide suggestions for the road trip and discuss potentially putting something together informally. Feel free to provide any suggestions or your thoughts/interest for game day festivities.

So far, we have following Surly-ites attending game (with total guest):

 @BurntEyes  @GottaB (6-8) @Longboard Horn (?) @TxEx84 (8) @BrazilHorn (?) @YChang (?) @InkaUtexas @KingBobo81 (4) @TornACL (2)

Miss anyone?

To catch everyone up on previous discussions, if enough people want to do a small tailgate (have a central place to congregate), we can start planning. This will be nothing like the awesome tailgates put on by @immamac and others at Michigan and Alabama games.  My plans are also uncertain on Saturday as I'll be herding cats in my group. But assuming we move forward, there are a few options.

1) Use RevelXP to setup up tailgate. Issues are cost ($1200 for small tent) and location. On the map below, only the orange box areas are available for a single game. Small areas and not near most of "the scene". The area in the blue box is RevelXP tents for season rentals. Absolutely would pay for tent in blue box, but cannot at this time.

2) Setup our own tailgate. Buy parking passes in the Blue Lot. Can buy tent for $150 at Costco or rent one for weekend. Would allow us to pack a car or two with food and drinks and have it next to tent.

3) Meet sometime in the afternoon at a bar/restaurant.  Watch early games and the do own thing before game. Again, I'm not sure my own schedule on Saturday, so TBD for me if I can make. @BurntEyes mentioned this place: https://charliebrownslex.com/. Could do just this or meet here first, then tailgate.

4) Do nothing. You guys are from the Internet! Very scary meeting in person. :)

Me. I am heading up. Will be there with @BurntEyes and happy to follow the group. We will be rolling in and can pick up anything needed.

My preference is a small saloon. Have some drinks, keep it simple and watch Texas fuck em up.

Thanks for the good summary @TxEx84

@InkaUtexas and I spoke. We're solo old men so have way fewer cats and gremlins to herd than others. Have yet to hear back on cost from the bar, will reach out to a couple more today. For our part, we are fine with going with the flow of whatever. Happy to help/haul, organize or get rejected by rando hillbilly milfs (or gilfs given the talent pool) wherever and then watch the game.

Wait, I thought you were providing the MILFs. They get paid in bourbon right?

I have tickets, hotel, airfare to head to Kentucky for the weekend with a group of 4 and would love to do any tailgate/other activities but am having to put things in limbo because of chemo/fuck cancer that might screw with my plans.

Good luck. Screw cancer. Hope to see you in Lexington.

Hope so too! I won't throw this thread completely off topic but will use the opportunity to encourage everybody to check out the I caught the cancer thread in the Daily Texan forum and to make doctor visits a priority! I had no history of major health problems and shockingly found out cancer doesn't discriminate - one day in July I was posting about my trip to Iceland and gearing up for football season, and a couple weeks later got the cancer news. Luckily I think I caught it early and my biggest problem is that I might miss a few Longhorn games this fall. Hope I can make it to Lexington...if not, I'll see some of you fuckers in Athens.

For those going the Woodford Reserve tour is really cool.  Looks like they're sold out already for the Friday but there are still some openings on Sunday.  Buffalo Trace is also cool. Jeff Ruby's was the place to be on Friday night for dinner when we went.  Think Cool River back in the day.

I think this is the way to go. Us having our own Surly tailgate might get all of us assholes thrown off campus 😆

I will talk to my uncle and cousins since they're the Kentucky natives and see what they recommend for bars/saloon meet ups. IIRC there is a bar called KYTailgate that's across the street from Kroger Field so maybe that might work.

Quick update.

Charlie Brown's did at least respond with a notice that they are seeing if they can accommodate our group.

I also reached out to:

Agave and Rye

The Melodeon

Ethereal Brewing Public House - this is likely where I will end up if we don't put anything together.

In my search I came across these and thought I'd include them for individual exploration.

OBC Kitchen Happy Hour This is a great restaurant happy hour aside. It will be busy so make reservations.

West Sixth Brewery Tour

Infinity Rooftop Restaurant for those traveling with someone they need to "impress"

I’m just sick that my future child is getting in the way of this trip… but pretty sure my lobbying would result in a swift divorce, so you all have a blast!

The “I’m doing it for our child” line didn’t work?

Maybe you would be happier with a divorce 😉
