California still has football?

Mater Dei was one of three Trinity League teams opening in Florida. St. John Bosco won 31-0 on Friday night in a game halted at halftime because of lightning. There was also lightning for Mater Dei’s game that delayed the start by one hour.

Orange Lutheran made it a Trinity League sweep in Florida with a 17-13 win over Miami Northwestern. Reagan Loki threw two touchdown passes to Nico Bland.

Elder daughter's high school team played Mater Dei during their Freshman year. Her boyfriend at the time was a center on our high school Frosh team. Not a big kid. I think he was around 5'6" 170# or something like that in his Freshman year. The Nose for Mater Dei's Freshman team was about 6'3" and probably pushing 300#. He would pick our player up by the neck and throw him into the ground and choke him.

Our school, lost something like 42-0.

Don’t the schools in that league have national recruiting budgets

Half of the "high schools" that get airtime on ESPN are not real high schools for one reason or another. They're recruiting operations, like Overtime Elite. I'm not even sure they enroll non-athlete students.

Those football powerhouses like Mater Dei and St. Thomas Aquinas are very much real schools.

Basketball on the other hand...

I think IMG has great facilities.  Mater dei is in the hood and aesthetically is worse than temple high school.   We don’t have stadiums like Melissa, Allen and Frisco out here.  But they do recruit for sure.  I think STA does as well to be fair

Kahuku in Hawaii has gotten several high-profile Polynesian players from the US mainland to transfer there in recent years. Not sure how or why those kids even want to move there.

Haven’t been super impressed with the Fla HSFB I saw this weekend. If not for Dia Bell, they mostly looked like ass. Derrick Coopers team got their asses kicked hy whatever Maryland team they played.

St. Frances is the best team in Maryland by miles - they were Biff Poggi's pet project before he went to CFB. They're the school that basically can't schedule a game against a Maryland school because of how aggressively they recruit.

Yep. They’ve got five of Maryland’s top 15 recruits this year including two five stars and are ranked like 5 nationally.  They have multiple other FBS commitments on the roster, too.

Basically an IMG type operation except there is a real Catholic school attached to it.

It’s a tiny town on the clear opposite end of the island from Honolulu. I have no idea why you would choose to play there over St Louis or Punahau.

It’s a wonder how Saban could get any recruits to Tuscaloosa.

I’d actually rather live in a tiny town in Hawaii than Honolulu.    Regardless, if you live anywhere in Hawaii you get great weather and you’re 30 minutes from the beach.   Yes, it’s not as cosmopolitan as Pharr San Juan Alamo, but beggars can’t be choosers.

I always enjoy seeing trash programs get embarrassed.  Grant Union (Sacramento, CA) players and coaches tried to start shit during warmups with Folsom, which is QB'ed by a kid who's a 5* and headed to BYU.  Folsom also has a WR who will play at Ole Miss.  Why nobody was tossed for the pregame shenanigans is a bit of a mystery to me.  #9 for Grant Union is a clown in particular.  And, of course, Grant also pulled some dirty shit during the game.

It didn't end well for Grant Union -- 51-13.

There's a pretty good Youtube video about the game as well.

If you would have actually visited here you’d know that living on that side of the island is the desired place to live at. Since you obviously have not though you are talking out of your backside.

The coaches from Grant Union are completely out of line. Can’t expect a high school team to play in control when the leaders are behaving that way.

Rifle is:

1) terrible at football; 1-8 last season

2) 3 hours away

3) currently dealing with wildfires; I was surprised they didn't cancel.

But yeah, HS football is terrible here.  Golden doesn't even have a marching band.  On the bright side, halftimes aren't 27+ minutes.

I lived on O'ahu for 4 years and never heard anyone say that they wished they could move to Kahuku.

Yep.  Like I said I preferred that side of town over touristy Waikiki.  And no part of Hawaii is far from a nice beach. Not sure he’s been to Hawaii

That side of the island is quiet and there is nothing wrong with living in Kahuku.  I would have gladly chosen to be there had I visited the area last year before moving. The Polynesian families here like areas where it is quiet and that place qualifies as peaceful. Areas also change. No place stays the same anywhere. 30 years ago Williamsburg was not hipsterville in NYC. It changed. Same as here and everywhere else.

I tell tourists to get out of Waikiki and go visit that area and really anywhere else on the island. Waikīkī is just where you wind up spending a bunch of money for a fraud of an experience in Hawai’i.

Fresh off a season-opening win, high school football's No. 1-ranked team Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) announced Monday its game against Bishop Montgomery (Torrance, Calif.) scheduled for Friday has been canceled.

Bishop Montgomery, which has been a lightning rod of controversy this season, lost its opener 34-27 Saturday to Hawaii power Saint Louis (Honolulu) in a game that was called off in the final minute following a confrontation between players and ensuing chaos.

The altercation resulted in numerous suspensions for Bishop Montgomery players. This comes on top of five transfers being deemed ineligible by the Southern Section office for falsifying documents.

Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance announced Tuesday it was suspending its season. The school is in the middle of an “internal investigation in coordination with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Department of Catholic Schools,” after it self-reported California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section violations.

It was already a season to forget for the Bishop Montgomery Knights, even before the school announced its decision Tuesday. The team raised eyebrows this offseason when it picked up over 20 transfers. Suspicions that something was up were all but confirmed Aug. 20, when CIF-SS ruled five of those transfers ineligible for violating a bylaw about “Providing Incorrect, Inaccurate, Incomplete or False Information.”

Just three days later, the Knights traveled to Hawaii to take on St. Louis School. Officials called the 34-27 loss early when a brawl broke out between the two sidelines and police intervened. The incident led to a wave of suspensions that forced Bishop Montgomery to forfeit its next game against Orange County powerhouse Mater Dei. A week after the game in Hawaii, the school parted ways with head football coach Ed Hodgkiss.

Yet all of that paled in comparison with the revelation Monday that infamous high school booster Brett Steigh helped secure the wave of transfers to Bishop Montgomery. In an interview with On SI’s Tarek Fattal on the “Fattal Factor” podcast, Steigh, a local businessman who says “most of my money does come from gambling,” revealed he paid parents to get players to transfer to not just the Torrance program but also to Narbonne — where Steigh graduated from in 1992 — and St. Bernard. This marks the third school where Steigh’s association eventually led to penalties and violations.

Narbonne was sanctioned in 2018 and 2024for illegal transfers. Steigh claimed that he never paid players in 2018, just a parent, which he said wasn’t illegal, and otherwise paid for better equipment and uniforms. Regardless, the first incident got Narbonne banned from the postseason in 2019 and 2020 and forced the team to vacate its 2018 title. In the latter case, multiple teams refused to play the school in protest of alleged rule violations, even before the punishment came down. Steigh began to back St. Bernard in 2019 when the school hired former Narbonne coach Manuel Douglas, who told the Los Angeles Times Steigh’s payments amounted to nearly $1 million to fund freshman transfers and school improvements. The partnership came to an end following an FBI and IRS investigation, and St. Bernard shut down its football season from 2021 to 2023.

The details of Steigh’s financial involvement with Bishop Montgomery aren’t clear, as he told Fattal he couldn’t “comment on any players” when pressed for details. However, he did say he supported the Knights with the knowledge of school president Patrick Lee. The school official told the LA Times that the claim was “an outright lie” and, speaking on behalf of himself and the school’s principal, denied ever meeting Steigh. Steigh also claimed that Hodgkiss did not have any knowledge of this and that he’s no longer backing high schools.

“I’m done. They can beat on someone else on Twitter now. I don’t give a damn,” he said. “I’m retired. I’m out. I just want to clear it up that it was all me, and nobody else. You didn’t have to fire coach Ed. … Ed’s a scapegoat for Pat Lee. Pat Lee is the one that’s complicit.”

While Steigh’s run as the “Money Man” might be over and done with in SoCal prep sports, the fallout from his latest venture could very well be just beginning. Per the LA Times, CIF Los Angeles City Section and Southern Section are investigating Steigh’s comments on the podcast.
