I thought coming into the year that this would be a relative rebuilding year with growing pains on the offensive line and a down year at receiver. I thought the defense would be elite, and that Arch would be pretty good but held back by a developing supporting cast.

Holy fucking shit!! This offense is fundamentally broken. I’m expecting 4-5 losses.

You mean in the next 4-5 games, right? We are going to have a lot more losses than that with this level of play.

In Chris Simms's first start, he went 10-20 for 130 yards with 1 INT, 0 TD and was sacked 4 times (Applewhite didn't do much better when he came in, going 5-11 for 53 yards and fumbling on the last drive).

In VY's first start he was 12-16 for 156 with 1 INT, 1 TD. The next game he was 7-13 for 65 yards. The next game he was 8-15 for 68 yards and 2 INT. But VY did run for 100+ yards with a TD or two at least once, if not twice, in that time span.

Colt was 12-19 for 178 with 3 TD. The next game he was 19-32 for 154 with 1 INT, 1 TD. The next game he was 7-8 for 124 and 2 TD.

Sam was 15-27 for 222 with 1 TD. The next game he was 21-40 for 298 with 2 INT, 2 TD. He didn't start the game after that due to injury.

Ewers was 16-24 for 225 with 1 INT, 2 TD. The next game he was 9-12 for 134. He didn't start the game after that due to injury.

Point is, that's five NFL QBs, including two NPOYs, none of whom exactly beat the world in their first few games as the full-time starter. None of them looked polished or consistent, but all of them showed flashes of what they could do. All of them eventually looked polished and consistent (bad games here and there notwithstanding). Four of them could have led a national championship team. One of them did. Aside from that, there's a shitload of difference between a RS-SO and a RS-JR/SR. You can't compare Colt's or VY's or Simms's or Ewer's last year to Arch's first three games. If he's still playing like this in mid-October, then he's not the guy, at least for right now and we had one of those about 25 years ago who ended up winning a title. I'm not saying Arch is going to be VY. I'm only pointing out that VY couldn't beat out Chance fucking Mock, and even when he did he got benched at least twice.

It is very frustrating flipping channels and seeing offenses that effortlessly move the ball. Even if they are awful like Florida and largest with 5 ints, they move it for a while. There are open receivers and they catch the ball. People get hit in stride. There are holes made for running backs. The running backs break tackles. We seem so stuck in neutral.

Wait.

What exactly did you expect from Quinn Ewers? He won a conference championship and got Texas to two CFPs.

It doesn’t matter what I think.  The NFL thought he was a 7th RD pick and barely rosterable.  The fact of the matter is Quinn’s stock fell at Texas, and Manning is currently on the same trajectory. That will be the narrative outside the program whether we like it or not

Can we also add a question for the board about whether or not Sark either needs to be in the booth if he stubbornly refuses to give up play calling? Or a question about whether or not he needs to hire a real OC and focus on being the HC? I just never see him giving this up and doing the same thing and expecting different results but I think it would be interesting from a POLL perspective where the surly collective is. Bc even if Arch is replaced I don’t see our offensive woes improving, sorry I do not. Maybe we get better play if Arch ain’t the guy but at the end of the day we have had the same offensive coordinator for 5 years in Sark and the offensive is his thing and it looks bad. And it’s not just this year, the defense on the other hand looks great. Does sark truly not see this?

Simms' first start was on the road against A&M as a true freshman. He had more passing yards against A&M in half than Archer had against UTEP in an entire game.

VY's first start was as a redshirt freshman against Iowa State.

Colt's bad game was against Ohio State. He looked quite good in his other games.

Ewers was crushing before the injury.

Do you really think any these are comparable to struggling, and that's putting it mildly, against fucking UTEP? At their very lowest moments, none of those QBs ever performed has badly as Arch did yesterday, especially taking into account the level of competition.

It don't make a shit. Reposting here because it's relevant.

Only 1 of 3 possibilities exist.

1) Arch is and always has been shit and nobody in all of his professional level personal training in HS and college, family of NFL QBs or 2 full fucking years at Texas under Sark caught that reality. So for 2 fucking years and 2 games played Sark didn't see the issues and make plans/moves in the portal or otherwise for a good alternative.

2) Arch was great but was absolutely hampered upon arrival at Texas by the coaching staff. We saw a 5 star and NFL drafted QB slowly lose his self confidence, execution and leadership under this staff. It might well be that the time he spent at OSU made him as good as he was since the performance curve dropped the longer he was here. Also, it may be that the offensive game plan didn't fit his abilities well and Sark was stuffing a square peg in a round hole. All of these could absolutely be true for Arch and there is a very clear example of it occurring here already.

3) Arch is hurt and the staff is keeping it under wraps as the alternative options are even worse. Remember this exact same argument in the Ewers thread? Well, it turns out to be true.

Those are the 3 options, and there are no others. Ever single fucking one of them points to shitty head and offensive coaching work. All of them.

I’ve seen you pushing this perspective for a minute now.  It’s a difficult analysis because the program has risen like a Phoenix out of the scorched earth of the post-Colt McCoy/Mack Brown era.  Back-to-back playoff semifinal appearances buy Sark a lot of capital and time. I do think it’s fair to speculate though.  Texas’ rise under Sark also coincided w/ the massive paradigm shift of NIL in college football.  Did that have as much, or perhaps more, to do w/ Texas’ return to prominence under Sark?  Now that I think is fair to consider, though personally I’m not fueling the coaching search plane any time soon

This is Arch's third year in the program, and he has already played a decent amount of football. His first start was a calendar year ago, and then had another after that where he was amazing.

If he stinks, he stinks. It's just really weird that he never looked this bad when he played last season, a couple of starts and occasional time in meaningful games.

Remember how horrible Wegman was last year for aggy? He even threw a pick against New Mexico State when he came in late junk time. He's doing well now, did well before. That's why I don't just write off Arch as being the only problem. He certainly is still raw. But I think there are a lot  of working parts in that offense that aren't working together well.

I want to be clear, I'm really down on Arch, but I'm not writing him off. But I also don't think he fixes whatever is going on anytime soon. He needs to sit and reset. He may need another off season. Just throwing him back out there isn't going to solve anything.

I definitely see the possibility and the logic of having Arch step back or split time in some way until they can find a formula that is productive.

Or retool the game plan and stop forcing him to drop back when he's not able to get the ball out. Haynes King seems like the perfect example of what we should do with Arch. But if he's truly hurt, you can't do that so maybe that's why we are where we are. I wish Wisner was healthy and sweet lord if Baxter misses more time. We have to run the football to have a chance when Arch is this bad.

I agree, he should transfer so he can go be great because it won’t happen with this offensive staff

I don't want to speak for her, but Ive never read where she is advocating for a new HC. Rather, I believe she feels like me. Sark is doing great at the higher levels of head coaching with CDC. However, he has some very clear and well documented issues at the OC/Game plan/Offensive staff area. Performance, penalties, QBs, OL, and I could go on but we all know them. What I and I think she is advocating for is stop blaming the QBs, the OL, the RBs, the WRs, the tight end and hold the real party responsible for all the issues. The HC and his Offensive staff. Demand not new HC or QB but change.

I don't really buy into the injury theory, though I wouldn't totally discount it. I've looked at a bunch of still photos going back to last year where he looks like he's getting knifed in the ribs nearly every time he throws. I

Retool it to what? Haynes King can throw a 7 yard hitch or a simple bubble screen. Arch can't, at least not consistently. There is no retooling around Arch right now.

Did you see anywhere near the quantity or quality of shit throws or did you just look at his reactions?

This is occam razor stuff. Don't over think it particularly when there is a track record by the HC already for doing exactly what some (myself included) are expressing could be a possibility. The most logical one available.

Retool it to get Arch running more. Haynes ran for 156 and 103 yards in his first two games this season. He only threw for 143 against Colorado. He does not have a TD pass this season. He has 4 rushing TDs.

Why would we retool the game plan when literally most of the plays are there if just an average QB is behind center? These aren’t other worldly throws needed. Arch can’t even throw 5-10 yard outs or screen passes behind the LOS. Why would we purposely anchor ourselves to a lower caliber of offense because the kid can’t make routine plays or throws? I think we can all agree that Caldwell or someone else on the team can probably make those throws. We need to give arch one more week to see if there’s any noticeable improvement physically and mentally but if not, then we need to move onto the next guy ASAP. This team is built to win now and Arch’s play completely eliminates any chance of that. I usually shit on Sarks playcalling but this season you can see the open guys clear as day without even needing the all 22 view. It’s been the theme since the first throw of the season where he skipped it to Wingo. Just that on repeat for 3 straight weeks but getting worse.

Anything other than up the middle, up the middle, play action, punt.

I need to go back and watch but I think there were a total of 4 misdirection plays. They were all for a TD or big gain. The 2 end arounds didn't work as UTEP spied them.

Use sweep toss, jet sweep, bootlegs, flea flickers, direct snap to RBs, end around reverse, old GD screens to the flank, whatever doesn't have us in 3rd and 8+ every god damn series.

Cause what we are doing isn't working and NEVER has against quality opponents regardless of who is behind center.

I'm sure our OL would hold up really great if we went to a ground and pound Georgia Tech offense. It was three yards and a cloud of dust yesterday, against UTEP (and yes, it'll look better with Wisner back).

Our offensive line cannot get push consistently, never have been able to to do what GaTech does. A good RB making plays mask out bad the OL really is.

This. I’m not advocating Sark be fired. I was providing historical evidence that all HCs who are also the primary OC eventually end up being fired. And that will happen to sark if the offensive woes continue and I see no reason to believe the woes will cease. Arch or no Arch. Sark will eventually be forced to hire an OC or he will be gone at some point. And I hope he unstubborns his own ass and gets into the fucking booth so that doesn’t happen or relinquishes most OC stuff to a good designated OC. History tells the tale of where this is headed. Sark should know. He’s already failed twice at HC out west and the same problems are here again also. It wasn’t solely to do with his sobriety.

im not advocating he be fired but he needs to learn from his previous mistakes and see what’s happening and make changes so the Big Money Donors don’t get antsy in the next two years and take the decision out of sarks hands. Which almost none of us want to have happen. I want him to stay but he needs to pull his head out of his ass. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is insanity and he absolutely should know this. He’s been given the ability to go and get any player he wants cuz we don’t have a cash problem. He’s never had that true ability as a HC at his previous HC stints bc there wasn’t NIL. He has every resource to make this the most feared offense in CFB so why isn’t it then?

What I saw yesterday was a guy who could run pretty well but not complete a pass to save his life.  I think he got a little looser during Q4 when he probably realized he couldn't lose the game.  But even that TD pass that was "perfectly thrown" was barely catchable.

He has to complete passes or he'll kill the rest of the team.  A moderately serviceable QB with the team would have had them at 52-7 yesterday.

One of our corners probably grabs that and takes it 100 yards the other way.

Retool it to get Arch running more. Haynes ran for 156 and 103 yards in his first two games this season. He only threw for 143 against Colorado. He does not have a TD pass this season. He has 4 rushing TDs.

Arch can't execute that offense. You have to hit the easy throws at a high clip. He can't do that.

Cause what we are doing isn't working and NEVER has against quality opponents regardless of who is behind center.

An average d1 QB throws for 200+ yards yesterday with that game plan. Average d1 QB play would have beat Ohio State.

The reality is Arch can’t run any offense the way he’s playing right now. If he has the yips, he needs to flush it.

Spinal stenosis is inheritable. Doesn't mean for sure, but definitely possible.

I'm only offering a possible explanation. I assume he's been thoroughly checked out, given Cooper's history, but it still seems possible.

I mean, the throwing woes are coming from somewhere... you would think, though, that if it were evident in practice we'd already be changing things.

Adding Caldwell sure seemed strange at the time (unless Owens and Lacey were seen to be total shit).
