We hear so much about a lack of loyalty from the players today, but consider this scenario for the players who aren't the stars:

You're a scholarship player who has everything handled for you by the school including tuition, class schedules, tutors, stipends, swag, meals, health care, practice schedules, trainers, housing, and everything else.

You've haven't had much playing time, but the coaches had promised that your time was coming, and that you just had to keep grinding.

Now, you've been at the school for one or two years and you get called into a meeting with an graduate assistant and someone from HR. During this meeting, you are informed that your role on the team has pretty much ended, and you should really consider going into the portal and catching on at another school. You're assumed everything was fine and you're in shock. School was never your thing and you have no idea where you even stand academically.

They give you forms to sign, and direct you to the portal website, show you how to register, and tell you that you should reach out to this person who might help you for a fee. They also inform you that once you sign, all those perks and help you've received will no longer be available to you. You can't use the facilities, but worse, you don't have anyone to help you navigate this confusing process. You enter your name but you see that there are hundreds of other players who play your position already registered. You tell them you need time to review the paperwork. They tell you you have 24 hours to review it.

You try to call your position coach, but he doesn't answer. You call your parents, who are really upset, and they also try, but also get no response. You reach out to your high school coach and ask him to help you, and he promises to help. You try to force your way into the head coach's office. After all, didn't he tell you his door was always open for you? Today, it's closed.

Finally, desperate, you reach out to that booster who 'helped you out last year when things were tough.' He doesn't answer.

Now you have a complete understanding of big-time college athletics.

Ohio St has almost the exact same number of players in the portal as us. The blue bloods with solid depth charts are getting hammered.

I don’t understand the exodus. Are we poor?

This is a board full of Texas grads so I will speak in term that we all understand. Awhile back I worked for an organization at the executive level. Every week I was on a call and all we talked about was the usual, ways to flow money to the bottom line to increase shareholder profits. Most of the discussion was ways to take from the little guy in the company. For example, if your bonus criteria was 50% Ebidar and 50% top line sales, we would give you a YOY goal that was unattainable, or if you were hitting it we would raise it mid year. Anywho, I hated the organization. I wanted to leave. As a former athlete I have torn my ACL 3 times, and needed an OATS procedure plus shaving of my meniscus. I had 90 days full disability pay so I took it. I was out 89 days and when I came back I turned in my notice. That's what people do when they don't like you.

Our players are the same way. Our coaches go over their houses and sit on their coaches and tell their mothers how they are going to take care of their babies. Then they get them signed and forget about them. The kids are over on the other part of the field working with the 3's and 4's and the coach, self admittedly, isn't seeing them because he is busy with the starters. Kids feel hopeless. Then that hopelessness turns to being jaded. Then when the time comes and they have a chance to turn around and put a dick in your ass they are going to do it.

Now are you going to stop kids from asking for more money? No.

But if Sark was moving around, watching all the kids at practice, and giving them a little pat on the back, saying, "Keep working. I see you", that gives kids hope.

A bigger rotation where kids get in the game and get to make a play makes them feel seen and gives them hope.

Not going "We're Texas" and telling kids if you get in the portal you are never coming back might help. How many players went back to their schools.

Pushing kids out of the program for the next shiny object is another one.

Many here might disagree with what I am saying but what we can all agree on is the way they are currently managing things isn't working. People turn ugly when they feel unwanted or unappreciated.

No, we just aren't paying the players who leave what they want. What does that tell you?

Good get here.

Yep.

God DAMMIT.

So when do the big incoming names start? We are going to have some gains, too, right?

Muschamp will get his dudes.

The issue was is and will forever be the fucking Oline and…are we going to get 1:1 for our departures? Cuz that is all I give a fuck about.

Ffrench was a miss. There's a reason you didn't see him play in the bowl game. Him leaving is just freeing up money for players who can contribute.

Is this why it’s happening at multiple other big time programs?

These mother fuckers need to come correct. Gonna be impossible to play as Texas on CFB26

People are going to transfer. Nature of the times. But how many players do you think we could've saved with these two changes. Bigger rotations. No hard stance on portal entries? Think about it. French is leaving and McCutcheon is not. What's the difference?

Donor exhaustion is coming. Donor’s have to see positive team results/accomplishments. Now, if you have a Cody Campbell willing to shell the hell out, that’s one thing, but most schools do not…

Jan 16 is last day to enter portal, 8 more days….an eternity! There could be a lot of decent players out there in the portal who will not get picked up…..then, what do they do?  No school scholarship, school, free meals and housing gone!

With all these roster changes, will Sark decide a Spring game this year would be beneficial? I would imagine so, but in Sark we trust!

Could it be that one is much better at football than the other? Nah, must be Sark's fault.

They may be grown ass physical men, but they still have 18-21 year old brains. They are kids.

We’re surging a bit right now. If we can pick up two WR - cam coleman is still out there and maybe the Vandy kid, and figure out the OL I’d say we are going to be fine. A LB would be nice too. But with DL , CB, RB and specialists taken care of, we are half way there. Doesn’t mean our GM is any good or that Sark suddenly sees his flaws because that shit isn’t changing.

35 minutes ago, Hank_Hill said:

We won’t know who matters and who doesn’t for a couple of years. At any of these schools. Before NIL and the portal I used to think when anyone transferred it was most likely either for lack of talent or poor attitude, if not both.

I don’t think that’s the case now. With this many leaving it can’t be that, unless this staff is horrible at evaluating talent / attitude; or they are incapable of developing that talent. If it’s for those reasons and we have this level of attrition we are fucked.

I think it is more a matter of not understanding how to play the NIL game, and that players have options; and we can get better at it. But I think many of these guys porting out are going to excel for their new teams. Time will tell

They have agents. The article( or poster) deliberately used the word "kids." They're in bigtime college football, not the YMCA.

Nature of the portal whiffs and surges. Right now I care the most about Oline. Muschamp will get his dudes. Hope we can either improve on or at least 1:1 the weapons that departed. I am assuming special teams will be good based on reading about the players. It’s the Oline the that concerns the fuck out of me.

Harris would be fired in two months if he was responsible for retention in a sales department. He’s gawd awful. Honestly I know players visit and depending on how big a name the player is there will be gossip but Harris needs to have better poker face. When it comes to dudes we want.

He saw his two lineman buddies from Michigan play Texas for a payday and wants to do the same.

Could it? Are you paying attention? 2022 it's Bijan and RoJo. Then 2023 comes around and we start Baxter. Brooks gets in and he is far better than Baxter and also RoJo, and you ask yourself why wasn't Brooks getting run in 2022? So then we get a peak at Wisner and realize Wisner is also better than Baxter and was also buried on the bench only to be seen because of injury. So 2024 Wisner becomes our bell cow.

Last year we were struggling at right tackle. Cam Williams was the most penalized player in CFB and whiffed on many a pass pro. The SEC championship comes along and Banks is hurt and can't go. Gooseby slides in and makes us forget Banks isn't playing. Then you ask yourself why did we struggle all year with Williams when we have a 1st round talent sitting on the bench?

Michigan game comes along and Moore is in the portal so we need a receiver. We bring in Lockett. Two catches and winning a 50/50 ball, something we could've used this season. He looks to be pretty solid.

So knowing all that why would you have confidence Sark correctly evaluated their abilities? I don't.

Except this guy only played in three games as a true freshman and retained his redshirt.

He was one of the top 2-3 O-line recruits in the country.

He is also from Texas at Denton Ryan High School.

The other two weren't.

Sark the OC is relying on the position coaches for that... As he should. When a player isn't cutting it, Sark the OC should say, "I need someone better. We have X players at that position, I expect one of them to be better than this. What are we missing?"

And the position coach should be confident in their coaching ability and the players they have and be able to put in the next player. If none of the players can succeed, the position coach cannot be counted on to succeed - either they can't coach or they can't identify talent... Or both.

Sark the Head Coach must identify the failure points and address them.

I mean it’s the Oline we’re talking about. We should just throw our wallet at people and see what happens. They know we need them. No need to be cool at this point. Maybe we don’t get all clingy and cringy but we should just throw bags of money at them and if they can catch the bag even better.
