Happy 20th anniversary

Kickoff was at 7:26 Central if you want to re-live it exactly 20 years later

Still is and probably always will be greatest sporting event I attended in my life.

The buildup, the teams both being perfect coming in, the setting in the Rose Bowl, the way the game played out and the personal investment in who the winner was all was just perfect.

Been to a lot of games, but that, to date, is by far the most amazing. May have been the most fun 24 hours I've ever had.

We had 5 tickets; 4 for my parents, brother and sis-in-law, and one for me -- clear on the other side of the stadium. So I snuck back over to their seats and, being bleachers, squeezed in. There were a couple of USC coeds who would go "WHOOP WHOOP!" and drove us nuts. Well, they got quiet by the end there.

When VY scored the go-ahead TD, you can actually hear on the recording the sound we in attendance made. I've never heard anything like it. My whole family and I went nuts. We all did. It was insane.

After my brother and I left for college, football was how my family stayed connected. We'd fly in from wherever we were -- San Diego, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Amarillo, whatever -- and we'd be at the game together. I'm actually grateful to Mack Brown for all those Holiday Bowl games, since that brought family to where I ended up. Ha! And we had some great times... that 2008 OU game was a special moment, seeing Ricky's record-breaking run in person, and just getting to know the people we've sat next to at DKR-Memorial over several decades; every time I show up, it might've been 5 years since I last made a game, but we remember. And there were some shit times, like being at the game when Colt had his head bashed in, back when my son was young. My son didn't really grasp the magic of Texas football until 172 flights out of San Diego were canceled, including mine, and he got to see us bust up Clemson instead of me last year. And that 5-year period of futility against OU, or the 2010 BCS game against Alabama -- that was just me and Dad who could make it. As soon as Colt went down, we knew.

Mom's gone, but I think she and Nicole's Dad are watching the games upstairs. Dad missed the A&M game this year so that I could go with my son, my brother, and HIS son. Say what you will about CDC but he's made gameday a heck of an experience. (Beating A&M helps, too. With all y'all 100,000 crazy fuckers being there with us.)

Shit what was I talking about?

Anyway...

Yeah. That game stands alone. Mom said that if she ever became an invalid, just to put that game (and the classic MGM musicals on repeat for her on the TV). Well, I couldn't hook up video to the ICU for her, though I did get to play "Singin' in the Rain" for her. I think that was one of the few things that registered for her; she was really out of it.

Anyway. Again. Thanks for reading this. 2006 was special for me. I knew when it we won in 2006 that nothing would beat that experience. Not just the win, not just the game, but being there with family. We might win another one, but it won't be the same without Mom and everyone being there.

Fuck.

I’m old.

I still can’t believe I got to go to this.

Unbelievable night. So many elite players with big moments one after the other, but only one Football Jesus.

Lived in the LA area at the time.

I’ll never forget going to this game, then wearing my Texas gear to school a few days later. I was a sophomore at the time and there were a lot of pissed off USC fan upperclassmen trying to talk shit despite the loss. It was fucking glorious.

I was there!!! Lived in Orange County at the time and was sitting with my coworker who was a USC alum. Lots of free lunches at work the next few weeks 🤣

I was on the East Coast moving from the ATL to my post-masters, big boy job. I remember the highs and lows of that game and barely sleeping before hitting the road in the morning

This was the view from my seat. Video courtesy of Lat22. This was the day and age before high def cell phone cameras. Not sure what he shot it on. You can hear someone saying ā€œplease, pleaseā€ right before the snap. I’m amazed I survived that moment. Had I had a knife on me, I would have probably slit my throat due to the stress.

do you have Akina?, asking for friend

Setting aside my wedding and the birth of my two kids, it was the greatest day ever, and easily the best event of any type I’d ever attended.

How can I fuck this up?

A TEXAS FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP on your birthday?? It doesn't get much cooler than that 🤘🤘

(still love the change in the crowd volume when Vince crosses the goal line)

I was on the opposite side of the end zone with a clear view of the Vince touchdown and it was glorious. Will never forget that moment!!

This is surly, you don't have to pretend for us.

I still get anxious when I watch that final drive to this day even though I know what happens. I knew VY wouldn't let us down when we got the stop on 4th down. The greatest championship game I ever saw and will ever see.

Put my hand thru our ceiling fan jumping up and down. Then started hugging the tv. Glorious game and day. Forgot how dominant that team was in all 3 phases of the game. Average 40 plus points a game .

The shrine in my study that I will make an offering to later this evening.
