I saw Nebraska play vs Bama in 67.  They came out wearing those bizarre cursive uni numbers and I just didn’t get it.  Bama and Snake Stabler beat hell out of them that day.  Undefeated but uncrowned.  That sucked but we have been fortunate.  I can’t complain.  But those cursive uni numbers were jarring to my 15-year old eyes.  I do rather like curves though.  Know wha oy mayne?!  Nudge nudge wink wink.

I know the consensus around here is that these are perfect, but there's something about the dark outline around the numbers that doesn't go well with the rest of the uniform. It's like the Cowboys problem of too many shades of blue. Then when they were away, they wore the darker shade of blue. The lighter blue is great, but I don't like the full execution of them from this era.

Another thing I miss about unis - both teams wearing solid colors.  Bama/Tenn in Legion Field was always colorful - crimson, orange, green turf, green steel girders and trusses, fall colors on Red Mountain in the distance.  This game was a pisser, though.  We were thoroughly whipped.  Our #25, Dennis Homan, was a fine receiver but Tennessee had him covered all day.  Their best player was from Montgomery - Richmond Flowers a track star with great hands.  He went to Tennessee because his father, Alabama attorney general at the time, took incessant flak and bullshit criticism for taking the controversial position that human beings have civil rights!

Texas and aggy did this once. Maybe Texas OU as well. Somewhere in the thread I posted a picture I ran across which I believe was either from the late 50s or early 60s.

Edit: found it. We were wearing orange helmets and aggy was wearing white. That would flip to them in maroon helmets and us in our standard white helmets.

Tennessee and UCLA both wore their colored jerseys almost all of the time back in the 60’s and 70’s.

They could do so because they were so light colored.

In the 1969 Cotton Bowl (68 season) I remember Tennessee had to order white jerseys just for the game because even though it is a much lighter shade of orange, someone made the decision they could not wear their orange ones in that game.

UCLA wore their blue jerseys here in Austin in 1970.

Very colorful afternoon.

There's a reason for that, shitty old TVs needed high contrast numbers to be legible and light yellow on light blue is tough. Agreed it dilutes the amazing color combo in pictures somewhat.

Notre Dame and Penn State are iconic and I very much respect that (plus it matches their grim Northern weather), but navy blue and white is uniform Ambien. At least ND has the gold helmets (and the Yankees have their pinstripes), but it's not exactly interesting to look at as a standalone color combo.

PSU's best look, IMO. I like the pant stripes, socks, and old school numbers.

We wore them one game last season and they were fire.  I do like the current ones as well though.

Numbers are too hard to read without the dark outline. It must've been a tough game for spotters and the PA announcer.

Those are so bad ass. Slab the dark blue monocolor UCLA logo on the helmet and they would be perfect.

Agreed.  Those are fucking great.  But I don’t hate these either.  I think they are more impactful on tv.

Syracuse and Virginia Tech would be in contention if they went back to their 25-years ago uniforms.

These actually go back to the Gary Beban era. Nice, but I like the McNown version even better.

Script Pitt, as we call it, is actually based on the signature of William Pitt, The Younger. He was the Prime Minister of England in the years following the Revolutionary War. Pittsburgh though, is named for his father William Pitt, The Elder.

The basketball team used to have a closer representative of Pitt's signature on the jersey until 1985, I think. Then they adopted the one from the helmet. That softer version was designed by Johnny Major when he came in 1973. He also designed the football uniform.

Majors hated the uniform change to DinoCat in 1997. That was courtesy of Idiot Steve Pederson.

Oh Yeah Yes GIF by Ryn Dean

The day they had the press conference to reveal the stupid uniforms in 1997 I was in the front row at the Student Union and I leaned over to a friend who covered Pitt for one of the papers and my quote was, “those are fucking awful”. They were indeed awful. Horrible.

I had to be careful around people because i help out at games but, whenever i was within earshot of Pederson I had Tourette’s and I would scream “stripes on pants” “stripes on helmet”, etc. Tyler Palio got reamed out because he put a Script Pitt on his helmet of the Senior Bowl. I said many other things to anyone who would listen. Thankfully, we eventually found our way back from the shittiest uniforms ever.

Got reamed out after the Senior Bowl? I hope Tyler told whoever it was to get fucked.

I've read it described as "a mountain with teeth". Pedersen should've been kicked squarely in the nuts for those ill-advised changes.

I have interviewed both Tony Dorsett and Hugh Green. Both great guys. Great football players. Great Pitt Men. That middle picture I believe is from the 1975 game v Notre Dame. Dorsett had 303 yards. It was the greatest game, in person, I saw, until Izzy Abanikanda had 320 and 6 TDs against Va. Tech.

My cousin was Danny's tight end in high school and teammate & roomie at Pitt.

After CYO basketball games we used to go eat meatballs with Danny at my cousin's grandma's, on his father's side. They were all Italians. Danny was such a great passer. You really could see it in high school. We used to go every Friday night to the Central Catholic games to watch them.

Those were great uniforms.

I have a picture of Green, as a freshman, as one of my screen savers.  👇

Billy Fralic was also a friend of mine. Great guy with a wickedly dry sense of humor. The term “pancake block” originated with him. He played in a high school playoff game, while at Penn Hills H.S., also Aaron Donald’s school, and it was against Central Catholic. My cousin was the biggest kid on the Central line that game and he said that Fralic, then a sophomore, told the Central offensive line, “If you don’t try too hard I won’t have to hurt you”. Which is pretty damned funny.

I loved our uniforms back then. I wish they would tone-down the colors a bit but, I’ll take what I can get after the shit they had in the 90s and onward.

Billy died of cancer a couple years ago.

Steve Pederson was one of the biggest jagoff assholes I have ever dealt with. Ralph Willard being another. Dan Devine, too.

I think this is pretty close. The top 3 are all great and you can shuffle them around.

I agree, of course I am partial to our uniforms. I think if Miami went full-time back to their really nice ones from when they first became, The U, they'd be fantastic.
