The Year of Jimbo: Pig in a Poke

Since it’s recruiting season and the only time aggy actually competes with Texas anymore I put together a few random thoughts on Jimbo’s first year as a sheep shagger.

aggy is excited that they will (probably) finish with a top 5 recruiting class for 2019.  They seem to have tossed 2017 down the memory hole.  Jimbo has demonstrated that he is capable of posting a losing record with FOUR such classes: #4, #3,#3 and #6.  Of course the indications are that he’s peaked and 2020 will be a big step down.  We may get an early indication by the relative strength of closes for the 2019 with NSD2 next week.  Looks like we've Survived the Surge(TM).  And recruiting is historically the little guy’s strong point.

Baggins left behind a huge mess at Tallahassee on the Offensive Line.  And he seems to be continuing that turdition at aggy.  With a (reasonably) mobile QB, they gave up 35 sacks in 13 games which is turrible, jist turrible.  The aggy OL also surrendered 89 TFLs.  Texas didn’t do a great job but gave up 14 fewer TFLs and 9 fewer sacks while playing against a tougher schedule with the Big XII CG adding an extra contest.

Any aggy “success” running the ball is an illusion created by their weak schedule.  Take out 500 yds against FCS Northwestern State and slightly less ridiculous padding vs UAB and UL-M.  You’re left with 3.47 YPC vs SECSEC and 4.3 YPC against P5 competition.  IOW, they performed considerably worse running against the SEC average than Texas did vs the SEC Elite.

Jimbo has a rep for developing QBs.  I’m not really on board since it was mostly recruiting rather than development. Mond DID look better this year but he got a full year under his belt and was still sub-par.  57.5% completion percentage is really bad – especially when a team throws as many screens and hitches as aggy.  Think of what I said about Jake Fromm.  Take away all the positives except for some arm strength.  Throw in a modicum of running ability.  That is what aggy is stuck with at QB.

Then there is the clown show of aggy pass defense which ranked #106 in the nation.  This harkens back to the good old days of the Dixie Chicks Defense and the Wide Open Spaces in their secondary.  Jimbo took over a very bad pass defense and actually managed to make it WORSE.  The fact that this bumbling was done against the primitive passing attacks of the SEC is a true embarrassment.

The one area of true strength for aggy was run defense.  They were very good even if you discount performances over G5 and FCS.  On the one hand their defensive front is mostly gone after this year.  On the other hand this is one area where recruiting can really help a team and Jimbo recruited well here.  Gripping hand those recruits rarely contribute much as true freshmen so aggy is pretty much guaranteed to be down next year with a good shot to improve thereafter.

I’ll leave the cuck commentary to the professionals.  There is plenty of football related grist for smack to lay down on aggy.  But the sheeple of Collie Station are convinced they are on the verge of greatness.  All they need is a string of "nattys" to be considered a top 3 program.  The crash from this high should be epic.

So why do they trust jimbo so much again?

1) aggy groupthink - they will love him until it becomes "the Baggins: we hates it forever..." and they will all change over en masse while burying previous thoughts on the subject.

2) Jimbo is a good salesman.  He's basically the poor man's Mack Brown.

The biggest plus they have is they are playing in the backwaters of the sec. they get nearly enough freebies to make it to a bowl. Most of the conference still plays ball control.

They are losing quite a bit of production and mond sucks. They have a couple of wr that could be ok. The front seven is going to be as bad as the back end was this year.

The only part of this that is potentially untrue is the bit about the front seven. The difficulty of replacing DL production is vastly overrated (see Billy Connolly's update on returning production for explication of this assertion).

I wouldn't bet on it, of course, but it is possible that their run defense won't take the expected step back.

I could easily see them losing 7 games next fall, but they still have an attainable 8-9 win ceiling. Having one of the most ludicrously top-heavy (even by SEC standards) schedules in America will do that.

Jimbo's recruiting classes in Tallahassee might have been highly ranked but they sorely lacked talent at needed positions: OL, LB and WR. Even his QB recruiting took a dive. His reputation as being a prick turned off a lot of recruits.

OL wasn't the only mess Jimbo left. The culture of the FSU program was rotten to the core. Watching Aggy wind up a rotten dumpster fire like FSU will be hilarious to watch. Then again, they've always been a dumpster fire.

Jimbo Fisher is the poor man's Mack Brown.  aggy will hate to hear this but it’s the truth.  The man their new coach most resembles is the same Mack Brown who they hated, reviled and envied for years when he was in Austin.  The parallels are eerie but Jimbo is not as good.

Both coaches are known for their recruiting but neither one was much of an innovator or an Xs and Os guy.  Both managed to recruit that one transcendent player, surround him with talent and ride that to a NC.  The biggest difference is that Mack also got very close on several other occasions and has had more sustained and consistent success.

Both changed the timeline in Texas HS recruiting by moving it up and offering players in an earlier window.  This paid off for Jimbo in 2019 and for Mack throughout his time at Texas.  The problem for Fisher is that instead of playing defense, Herman counter-attacked with the indirect approach by going OOS – hitting aggy in the flank.  In the end, Jimbo earned a draw in the battle but lost the war.  After adjusting to the timeline surprise attack, Herman (and Riley) appears to be pushing them back towards their historical top 15-20 type recruiting for 2020.  The major differences from Mack's style are broadcasting large numbers of offers vs exclusive, high hit rate offers and the character of the recruits.  Mack often filled up early with some non-elite players to create a sense of urgency while Jimbo recruits a bunch of academic, character and psych risks.  Both ended up taking a lot of guys who will never contribute but for very different reasons.

The biggest weakness of both Texas under Mack and FSU under Jimbo was Offensive Line.  The OL requires the most detailed evaluation and development and both men are more known for their ability to sell to recruits and fans than their mastery of operations details so that makes sense.  You can see the disaster that Jimbo left behind in Tallahassee and we are still dealing with the ripple effects of Mack’s errors on that front.
