San Antonio Spurs 2025-26 - Release the Kraken
Kermit replied to Mitch Cumsteen's topic in Basketball
Im not disagreeing with you, but the Holt’s are probably the least wealthy among the NBA owners. I don’t think they’re billionaires. They’ve put in more than I thought they would on the stadium and project. It’s not perfect, but imo losing the Spurs (which probably would’ve been the direct consequence of prop B failing) would have been devastating…to me as someone who lives close to San Antonio. I mean, flying to fucking Las Vegas? Are you out of your goddamn mind? -
Aleksandr heard the whine of an approaching Russian drone. A Ukrainian infantryman on a four-soldier foot patrol, he was picking his way at 2 a.m. through the waist-high vegetation of an August meadow. A high-pitched whir rose in the moonless quiet. An armed multicopter had detected them and was maneuvering to attack. Now luck would influence fates. The soldiers were on a mission to string wire across the forlorn emptiness between opposing trench lines, creating obstacles to entangle Russian infantry and strip invaders on motocross bikes from their seats. Weighed down by equipment, they were caught in the open and exposed. The nearest hint of protection — the woodlot they stepped out from minutes before — was about 300 yards back. Both Russia and Ukraine operate remotely piloted mini-aircraft that watch over the battlefield with cameras and pursue targets on sight. Some drop bomblets. Others sweep low with explosive charges to strike quarry kamikaze-style. All fly more than twice the speed that even a fit soldier can sprint, a disparity ensuring that many engagements end in one-sided agonies and video-recorded gore. In this new form of warfare, chance still plays a role. When multiple soldiers appear together, most drones cannot strike them all. A pilot must decide: This man? That one? The fleeing soldier who tripped, becoming an easy kill? Or the pair running together who might be felled two at once? The pilot chose Aleksandr, a silhouette holding a rifle in tall grass. The drone stopped above him and released a small explosive munition. After a brief free fall, it landed beside him on dirt. Light flashed in Aleksandr’s eyes, accompanied by a blast that threw him down. His luck was bad: Shrapnel tore through him; pain flared in his left leg. His luck was good: The drone did not linger for the finish. It darted away, chasing his peers as they bounded for trees. Bleeding, pressed to soil, he heard more explosions, off in the direction from where he had come. Quiet settled over the field. Gift link. Long read (28 minutes) but well worth it: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/05/magazine/ukraine-russia-war-drones.html?unlocked_article_code=1.y08.O2KZ.yGOvMOdt95zB&smid=url-share

Thanks. They have voted internally but have never been extended the offer. Sorry for the confusion.

Government Shutdown 2025: This Time It’s Personal
Biff Tannen replied to Bozo_Casanova's topic in Cloak Room
I don’t think anyone knows anything except for people are fucking stupid and unpredictable. I think there’s as much chance of dotard and the Rs winning again in 28 as there is the Dems sweeping the swing states. It’s all up in the air and there isn’t enough data or polling in the world to figure out what’s going to happen. I’m just looking out for me and mine and letting the chips fall where they may. -

why are you being a pussy? you need to calm down. 9-3 Texas is in. we're Texas, Arch, eyeballs, our SOS, blah blah blah. you said it precisely, but everyone who is saying not so fast on Texas 9-3 is meaning exactly what you are saying. it's a bottomline fact, 10-2 texas is in. 9-3 maybe, maybe not with way too many variables to predict even with only 4 weeks left.

My exact thought, she was auto tune out without fail. Just an uppity nag (yes I double checked that)

No, that's just unrealistic nonsense talk Georgia is in barring a season implosion and that's bad for the entire SEC. And GA Tech beating georgia after georgia loses to other people introduces another wrinkle entirely. This is just wrong as you are replacing a team instead of eliminating one with this logic. They will have 2 conference losses, loss head to head against Texas and not be in.
-
Good observations on Big 12. If BYU loses to Tech, BYU shouldn't drop below Utah. We both would have losses vs Tech and BYU beat Utah head to head. BYU would only have one loss versus Utah's two. Utah being so high right now could create some messiness.

I abandoned nonstick for C/S. I have a mix of Matfer-Bourgeat and De Buyer. I recommend either of the brands, but the De Buyer are a bit more expensive and robust. That said, they run sales on their website frequently. Some notes: The De Buyer "Minderal B" line has an epoxy coating on the handle. They come with a warning that they can be in the oven for 10 minutes max at 400. I've seasoned mine in the oven with some foil wrapped around the handle and the coating was not damaged. But if you like De Buyer and want to put it in the oven, the "Pro" version has a nice, stainless handle. Matfer is less expensive and its 11 7/8" pan was the gold standard for years. Last year, a local French agency tested their cookware by boiling an acid solution in a bare (unseasoned) pan for 2 hours and the result was some leached chemicals that are no bueno. But it's pretty common knowledge that (1) you season these pans and (2) you don't put acidic solutions in them, which strip seasoning. So under ordinary use, this test is ludicrous, and I have continued to use my two Matfer pans without worry. Also, in theory, there probably aren't many similar products which would perform differently under this same standard. Both pans have pretty good sloped sides (other than the De Buyer omelet pans and the crepe pans). So you want to research how much cook area you get (my 10" Matfer has 7" of cooking area for instance), and go from there. Lastly, do not expect a carbon steel pan to perform like Teflon. They are very good alternatives and will last forever. With room temperature eggs and a good pat of butter, I can have fried eggs sliding around like hockey pucks. But a little sticking will happen, particularly when pan frying proteins. It's not bad though. You can clean these and cast iron with soap without issue (previously, this was discouraged when soaps contained lye). I don't think you can go wrong with either of these brands. Heat them slowly, especially if you use them on an induction HOB (induction HOBs have warped C/S pans when put on blast, but most pans, including the two above, incorporate a slightly upward bow in the base to fight this tendency).

If you are reading this, I have more in common with you than most people I know. I came here long ago to talk about Texas football; now I spend 3/4's of my time on Surly on this thread, and very little on the football boards. The insight and opinions you share with us are so much more grounded in facts and reality than anything I read elsewhere. Thank you all. Put me down for a round. Not sure where or when, but I'd welcome a meet and greet.

Hey hey hey, I thought we collectively decided NOT to make major hot takes and doom about this team after 1 game against a top 5 team

In my prior life I co-developed, designed and manufactured large energy storage M/G/FW devices. The housings were cast iron, many inches thick. It took a lot of trial and error to dial in the tolerancing, draft angles, chimney locations etc. Those cast iron shops have so much experience, we never could have come up with those processes on our own. Here's a photo of one device with half the housing in place:

I just hope people making decisions about the path forward see yesterday for what it was: an indication that people will come out to vote against Trump, if the situation is dire enough. That means: DONT STOP TRUMP FROM FUCKING UP THE COUNTRY. Voice opposition, use the courts where you can, but otherwise get out of the dumb motherfucker’s way. Do NOT help them reopen the government. Let Trump keep fucking up the economy and exacerbating inflation with his kneejerk negotiated tariffs. Let Trump turn Latinos against him by having ICE continually disappear people and arrest with no cause. The worst thing that can happen over the next 12 months is for Trump to change course and we go into the mid terms with lower prices (if Trump abandons the tariffs), a functioning government (if Dems help them reopen and pass future spending bills), and ICE not a problem (with immigration “solved”). The Dems need to do everything they can to ensure the next year is a case study on failure of authoritarian governance.

Fun game last night. Miro and Miko in particular played their asses off which is what you need from your 2 best players. I'm pretty impressed how we've treaded water and racked up solid points with all the injuries the last 2 weeks. Hopefully can start getting healthy soon. -
