San Antonio Spurs 2024-25 - Taking it in the pooper for Cooper
DToro replied to Mitch Cumsteen's topic in Basketball
Tough day. I. covered the Spurs from 1996-2014. I saw the franchise, which had always been on the cusp of getting the crown, but never getting over the hump, as runner-up. Losing to the Washington in 1979 with a commanding lead. They were never able to get past the Lakers and "Showtime" with Ice Man and the A-Train. Throwing it away vs Trail Blazers with the Admiral and Elliott. Losing to Phoenix as Barkley shut the Hemisphere. Getting knocked out (literally) by the Jazz. The Dream crushing their dreams in 95. Always good teams, but never great teams. Bottoming out in 1996. Many questioned when Pop taking over from Bob Hill who the players liked and had good records but not great. Pop had no HC experience. It looked like a long rebuild. Then they hit gold with Duncan. Those two forever changed the trajectory of the Spurs franchise. Even then it wasn't easy. After the 1999 lock-out shorten season started, the Spurs were had an below average record. It was a NBA on NBC Sunday at the Alamodome when they played the Rockets that things change. Rumors were he was going to be let go if they lost. They didn't. That season they went on to win 31 of their 36 final games in a 50-game season. Slapped the Lakers 4-0. Got the Memorial Day Miracle and beat the Trail Blazers. And thumped the Knicks to win their first championship. I thought about that start when I saw Pop today. If they had cut the cord after the Rockets game, what would we have missed? All the accomplishments for sure, but the person and impact he's had on his players, staff and SA that will be everlasting might not have happened. In between the 1997 and now, he accomplished so much as the coach. But he changed a culture. He helped change that city. I've had more than enough tough interactions with Pop. They are no fun. But i get it. He demands excellence in everything. Even in the smallest interactions, do your best, and if a question he thought was average at best, he was pushing your buttons to do better. When the microphones and cameras were off, he was genuine and nice. I heard so many stories of people he helped and non-profits he would support in the shadows. He often told them not to say a word, because he didn't want to take away from what was important. HIgh, high empathy for people. I hope he recovers and gets back to leading a good life. It was so great to see his players caring for him, like he often cared for them. I believe in life, what you put in, comes back to ten fold. I saw that today. So I will drink a good wine this weekend in honor of El Jefe (he's part owner of A to Z) and toast to your career. Life is hard. Adversity is your opponent. It will always be there. Pop, just remember what you taught us all... Keep Pounding the Rock. -
holy fuck that is some commie sounding bullshit also... we don't get credit? clearly he's never been to Normandy 🙄

Here, let me help you. The word you’re looking for is deported. DEPORTED. Not extradited, DEPORTED. What’s that? Is that you filing for food stamps? DENIED, this ain’t no socialist country. -
the good news is those chips taste like a dog’s asshole right after his anal glands have been expressed so tracking them down at costco or sam’s or wherever else is entirely unnecessary.
-
Damn. Not ideal if true. Come on Owens, get your shit together.

Good thing DFW got their daily 1” of rain again. Impressively depressing how precip likes to avoid the Hill Country.

Funny, I actually thought Crofty and Brundle were more impressed with Piastri's move on Max. Maybe it's that they spent more time talking about Lando because it took him so much longer to pass, ha.
-
A gimme, Redge? Dunno about that.
