Texas Recruiting Notes 2023: Strippers, Monkeys, and 5-Stars

Recommended Posts

We’ll update this throughout the week.

The state is loaded at d-line and edge. It’s also a very good corner and receiver class.

QB Arch Manning, Isidore Newman (New Orleans, LA): He needs no introduction.

RB Rueben Owens, El Campo (El Campo, TX) - Texas: On top of the obvious ability, Owens is an active recruiter.

WR Ashton Cozart, Richland Hills (Richland, TX): Excellent combination of smooth route running and plus speed. Has some length, too. Natural kid, good hands. Covet.

WR Johntay Cook, DeSoto (DeSoto, TX): The staff is high on Cook. He just visited A&M. He’s mentioned OU as a favorite in the past. Quicker than fast, excellent ball skills.

WR Jalen Hale, Longview (Longview, TX): The top wide receiver in the state according to pretty much everyone.

OL Harris Sewell, Permian (Odessa, TX): Texas should have a good shot here for the top interior prospect in the state.

DL Avion Carter, Tascosa (Amarillo, TX): Top-10 player instate. Probably interior d-line but it remains to be seen.

DL Jordan Renaud, Lewisville (Lewisville, TX): Move-in from Florida. Clear and obvious take. Being new to Texas will make him an even more difficult pull.

DE Ashton Porter, Cy-Ranch (Cypress, TX): He’d be a Jack in the Texas defense. Does well to fight through doubles/conflict. Look for that position to be another priority in 2023.

DE Dylan Spencer, C.E. King (Houston, TX): This dude is a stud. He’d be a twitchy Jack OLB, but could also play XOLB because of his athleticism.

LB Anthony Hill, Ryan (Denton, TX): Arch isn’t the only five-star slated for Austin this weekend. Hill is a mix of old school and new school inside linebacker. Basically a unicorn. Extremely high floor because if for some reason ILB doesn’t work out, just put him on the edge and let his shock power go to work.

CB Jayvon Thomas, South Oak Cliff (Dallas, TX): NFL bloodlines. Move-in from Waxahachie. Thomas will be the biggest priority out of SOC in some time.

CB Javien Toviano, Martin (Arlington, TX): Probably the top corner in the state and top-five player overall. UT is in prime early position.

DB Dalton Brooks, Shiner (Shiner, TX): He’ll come in with his brother, Doug. Brooks could play receiver but looks like a young BJ Foster to these eyes.

*DL David Hicks Jr, , Allen: He was on our original list but visited last Thursday. He’s a priority interior d-lineman.

We’ll add more names as we get them.

I don't mind Eli. He seems like a pretty solid dude, and at one time I believe he wanted to come to Texas, but we got Simms instead.

Yea.  Heard him on interviews.  Kind of a down to earth guy.  He just has resting whiney jerk face

Spoiler

— Over the weekend I re-confirmed that 2023 prospects Ashton Cozart, Anthony Hill and Jamel Johnson will be in Austin next weekend for the big 2023 weekend. Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy DB Malik Muhammad also confirmed he will be there. Some prospects might make a one day visit, but many of the guys will spend the entire weekend in Austin on an unofficial including Johntay Cook, Rueben Owens and Arch Manning who will come in after spending a day at SMU.

(CJ Vogel) Ford Sports Performance Bringing Big Group to Austin Tomorrow

Spoiler

Texas will be hosting a big and talented group from the pacific northwest as Ryan Clary will be bringing in a group from Ford Sports Performance.

The talented group will be on campus tomorrow and will likely have the coaching staff all to themselves. The FSP group had a busy first week of visits with trips to UGA, Alabama, Clemson and Auburn.

Here’s a rundown of who will be on campus:

2023 5-Star DE Jaydan Wayne – Tacoma, WA

Wayne has a top 15 composite ranking in the 2023 class and has been planning the Texas visit for a little over a month now. It also helps that he has a preexisting relationship with Texas defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski. There will be a huge group of suitors for the talented edge rusher.

2022 3-Star OL Mark Nabou – Seattle, WA

Nabou committed to Washington on the first of June, however, I am told that he will make the trip south to Austin with the rest of the group to visit Austin.

2023 4-Star QB Gabarri Johnson – Tacoma, WA

Texas is heavy in the recruitment of Arch Manning, but it never hurts to have options. Johnson comes to town holding offers from Oregon, Utah, Washington State, Arizona State and Arkansas just to name a few.

2023 4-Star CB Caleb Presley – Sammamish, WA

Teetering right on the outside of the top 100 national recruits, Presley has already made a name for himself across the country as an elite talent on the outside. Presley has major interest from Notre Dame, Oregon, USC and Washington. I imagine those four will remain in contention for the duration of his recruitment.

2023 4-Star RB Jayden Limar – Lake Stevens, WA

Washington is pegged as the early favorite for Limar. The talented running back has superb explosiveness, recording a 41.5″ vertical jump and a 10–7 broad jump.

2023 3-Star OL Micah Banuelos – Burien, WA

Banuelos comes to town with three offers under his belt – Washington, Nevada and Texas A&M. At 6’3″, Banuelos is fit to move to the interior at the next level and it appears that’s where most of his interest is early on.

2023 3-Star CB Andre Piper-Jordan – Federal Way, WA

The 6’1″ cornerback holds an early offer from Nevada. Luckily for the talented corner back, he still has a lot of time to garner west coast interest and the trip to Austin will get him on the radar for regional schools as well.

Other schools may wind up involved, but the Manning recruitment looks like it could be a two horse race between Texas and Clemson. Both make a bunch of sense for the family. Clemson can obviously win and get QBs drafted. Texas has a better offense suited for NFL prep and a strong relationship between the staff and family. Manning's visit this weekend is big, because the Clemson visit wowed them.

They know it behooves the kid to commit relatively soon because of the bellcow effect for 2023 and the potential impact for 2022 also. No one knows when a commitment could happen, but there's a sentiment that they'd prefer to do it ahead of the 2022 season and then PR the fuck out of his life and where he's headed for 2 years. We'll see.

Still hoping he decides to commit before the start of the 2021 season...

Just guessing I'd say either before his junior season begins this fall or shortly after the conclusion of his junior season.

If he commits this summer, then the Texas staff can start recruiting the hell out of 2022 O-Linemen. "After your redshirt freshman season, you can block for Arch Manning and Rueben Owens. You'll be the guy on tape protecting Arch's blindside. You can be the pulling guard that springs Owens for an 80 yard touchdown." It's a hell of a sell.

MOST 2023 RECRUITS EXPLORING COLLEGES FOR FIRST TIME

The excitement is starting to build for Texas' big 2023 weekend with names like Arch Manning, Rueben Owens, Ashton Cozart, Johntay Cook, Anthony Hill and more expected to make their way to Austin on Friday and Saturday.

Manning made a trip to Clemson this past weekend that landed him an offer from Dabo Swinney. Owens took trips to LSU and Alabama with his trip to Tuscaloosa especially sticking out. That being said, Owens made a solo trip to Austin on Monday to talk to coaches and set a gameplan for how he can help recruit for Texas this weekend.

(CJ Vogel) Elite 2023 WR Sets Texas Visit

Spoiler

2023 Del Valle WR Braylon James has set a date for an unofficial visit to Texas to meet Steve Sarkisian and his staff.

James tells me he plans on making the short trip to campus June 14th, on the backend of what is expected to be a massive weekend for the 2023 class.

The trip to Austin this weekend is expected from what James has been saying earlier this spring. However, a trip to Baton Rouge to see LSU stands in the way of being on campus for the first couple days of the weekend.

Texas offered James on June 1 and this will be the first time the staff has seen him in person. This past weekend, James was in California visiting Stanford, Cal and USC.

What's the Clemson QB coach Streeter's rep like? Obviously TLaw is a stud but also a generational talent so who knows how much coaching that took.

Seems like the older Mannings chose schools largely based on the QB coach (Cutcliffe) as much as anything. So one advantage we hopefully have - HC Sark isn't leaving for another job. Streeter (and even Elliott) from Clemson and BoB at Bama could be gone for promotions elsewhere by the time Manning gets on campus. If the family is highly focused on QB coach, those schools are more of a gamble.

IT on Owens

Spoiler

RB Rueben Owens, El Campo (El Campo, TX) - 2023 (TEXAS):

The nation's No. 1 running back for the 2023 class hit the road last week to take in LSU and Alabama in SEC country. As soon as he returned, he was already headed back to Austin.

“I just wanted some one-on-one time with the (Texas) coaching staff,” said Owens. “A lot of people will be in (Austin) this weekend. And I’ll be back this weekend.”

The 5-foot-11, 187-pound five-star composite is a solid Texas pledge, but don't get it twisted; he's going to enjoy the recruiting process. Just don't freak out when you spot Owens on another college campus.

After 2,319 yards on the ground and 30 touchdowns in two seasons, Owens is set to return with top offensive targets Arch Manning and Johntay Cook. Those three speak often and will be with each other over the weekend. That last sentence rocks.
