Holy crap, stop this.  SMU had its nice little day in the sun last year.  Now let's all go back to ignoring them and not manufacturing reasons to talk about an irrelevant program.  This thread needs to make its way to the 10th or 11th page.

Dear Mustang Nation,

We are pleased to announce that Damon Evans has been named SMU’s new director of Athletics. Damon brings a wealth of experience from nationally-recognized programs, having served as athletics director at both the University of Georgia and, most recently, the University of Maryland. Under his leadership, the Terrapins have won 49 Big Ten championships and tournament titles. The program has earned seven national championships since 2014, when he joined Maryland as the executive athletic director and chief financial officer.

What stadium do you think they will host LSU in? AT&T? Cotton Bowl?

Came here to post.

The article I was reading on SI.com said "At LSU in Baton Rouge" and then "at SMU in Dallas" for what it's worth.  I think Jerry world would be a mistake, that would turn in to a home crowd for corndog easily.

TCU did this exact thing about 10 years ago. Of course the return game was Jerry World.

Sure, but that’s how it worked for TCU- they planned a home-and-home, then LSU insisted on ATT (they saw it as a recruiting showcase and they wanted a lot of exposure), and it ended up as a one-off at ATT.

I fully expect, at some point, for LSU to say, “We’re not playing this in a 35,000 seat stadium, are we?”

Too many upgrades to Ford Stadium to move a big name OOC to JerryWorld or the Cotton Bowl. Agree with above. The best thing they can do is try to limit how many LSU fans can attend. Nice bit of scheduling for SMU. Ballsy even.

Happened to TCU with LSU and Ohio State.

Ford is a glorified high school stadium with an incredible new South endzone facility.

Having been to the last two TCU - SMU games in Dallas before last year, I really am not sure how in the world they would handle a truly full crowd at Ford. Hell, they run out of ice and beer by half when they play TCU, That type of inadequate concession capability could turn ugly if LSU were to play there.

Well they have 4 years to figure that out. OU and Clemson both roll into Ford in 2027.

Technically, they had multiple games over capacity this past year as the official I believe is just over 32,000.

Parking is a bitch and stadium concourses, bathrooms, and concessions really aren't enough to handle capacity, but i think they spent the money in the right place in the end zone complex.

Unless you are going to add boxes and suites to generate more revenue, the fan experience is wasted money.

There is no chance in hell that game will be played at SMU. It’s a nice thought but way too much money left on the table with a small stadium.

They aren’t making their NIL money from ticket sales and they didn’t just spend $100M on the stadium to not play big games at Ford. They’ll make way more money from handshakes on the Boulevard that day than a few extra seats at soulless Jerry World especially when they’d give up any semblance of home advantage in the stands.

Same song, different day.  Exact same arguments were used for bringing LSU and tOSU to TCU's stadium.

From 2010-2012, they spent 164MM completely rebuilding their stadium.  Notwithstanding that 164MM, the 2013 LSU return game was played at Jerry World.

In 2012, a home-and-home between TCU and tOSU was announced, with tOSU coming to FW in 2018 and TCU going to Columbus in 2019.  In 2017, the schools (CDC AD at TCU) announced the arrangement was collapsed to one game at Jerry World. https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/college/big-12/texas-christian-university/article147401554.html

Now maybe SMU's AD has better negotiating skills than CDC.

Maybe SMU is better positioned than TCU in 2017, when it was in a P5 conference, was coming off an 11-3 season, and 12 10+ seasons since 2000, including an 11-6 Bowl record, including a 2-1 record in BCS/NY6 Bowls, and 6 top-10 finishes.

But maybe not.

I will be absolutely shocked if LSU comes to Ford.

I think TCU has always been open to the payday at Jerryworld, especially with how close it is to Ft. Worth and being the closest D1 program. SMUs donors are funding the AD almost exclusively for like 9 years with the ACC move. Schmoozing the big wigs on campus for big games seems uniquely important at this point in time as they raise their profile from G5 to ACC and they seem all in on being at the top of the league regularly. The donors who are big fans too would almost certainly offer to cover whatever they’d make from a Jerryworld move. If I’m right, and I really think I am, they certainly made it clear to LSU that the game will be at Ford and put it in the contract.

We played above capacity 4 times last season you goofball. Last I checked University Park didn't burn to the ground.

I know TCU fans have gotten used to thousands of empty seats, though.

I doubt the LSU game isn't a true home and home. I mean we are in the ACC. We played FSU at home last season. Giving LSU a game in death valley then giving them a neutral site game doesn't make any sense.

It doesn’t have to be ATT (and, Lord, is ATT a horrible place for college football). The announcement says “Dallas” as the site. There is a large stadium in Dallas, available for games. That stadium has a history with SMU football. Some used to call it “the house that Doak built”.

And that would be a large stadium that would be flooded with LSU fans who would outnumber SMU fans 3:1 and has no suites or creature comforts the well-heeled SMU higher ups enjoy. A hot Cotton Bowl on September 1st without suites and all their club levels. Yeah, not happening. The game is going to be at Gerald J Ford Stadium. SMU is not getting paid to play this game. This is a true home and home.

You didn't read my second post did you and yes, we have grown accustomed over the years when playing at Ford to an abundance of empty seats and being able to sit where we wish almost as accustomed to a trip to the bathroom taking 30 minutes due to the lines or last calls for beer being with 5 minutes to go in the second quarter.

SMU had a great season last year and it looks like they have the pieces in place to have another good season, but don't act like crowds have been piling into that oversize high school stadium for years.

I don't think anyone is acting like that. But SMU has been shitty for years and wasn't in a power conference for 30 of them.

I'm sure they'll continue to upgrade the amenities as the games consistently now go over 30k.

Sounds like a contract violation and a fat check.

LSU knows what they signed up for and guessing they asked for a certain amount of tickets to make it a deal. I'm not sure why we're overcomplicating this.

Agree that it'll be at Ford.  They're already trying to sell season tix as a way to guarantee your spot to a game 4 years away.  As an alum I'd be super pissed if I got in now and then they had this game at Jerry World.

Like I said, TCU seems to like the payday, and it makes sense for them since they are the closest D1 program to Jerryworld. I think it's silly to suggest that LSU signed a home and home and then refused to play at Carter. Why would they sign to begin with? I also swear I saw somewhere that it was in the contract that if the Cowboys had a new stadium they would consider playing there. I really believe SMU put it air tight in the contract that it'll be at Ford and made it clear to LSU AD why they want it at home.

They have no choice on playing at Vandy and the issue isn't the playing in a smaller stadium.

The question becomes what do you get from playing the game in Dallas in the first place and that isn't a knock on SMU.

TCU wanted the home and home with LSU, but instead the ESPN/ABC presented to them a one game "event" in Arlington.  Same with the home and home with Ohio State.

I have no idea what or if there was a termination clause in either contract and I do know part of the pitch used by Del Conte and others to raise the funds for the stadium rebuild was to play such games at home.

There are the promises that are made and the promises kept.

SMU attendance is a funny thing. From 1981-1982, SMU went 21-1-1, and still drew only 27k in Texas Stadium for league games (not against Texas, of course.)

Ztejas is right about last year- they neared 35k for many ACC home games. In 2023, home games at SMU averaged in the low 20,000s.

TCU got their home game sellouts against a blue blood program, with national TV broadcast. They got them every year, against Texas or OU.

Now, you just have to generate the excitement against TT and OSU.

They also sold out a few games at home before joining the Big 12 as well against Utah and BYU similar to SMU last year.

Two big differences is where they were ranked at the time and the athletic department did a much better job drumming up local support in Ft. Worth.  Del Conte leaving TCU is understandable, but the big mistake was following his recommendation and hiring Donati. One of the few moves Jeremiah did that was the right thing was the firing/resignation of Patterson.

SMU so far seems to have good support in Dallas and needs to build on that so I understand why they want this type of game on campus.  As I said before, I am not sure what the attraction is for LSU and I really don't understand OU scheduling the game as they already have the game in the Cotton Bowl each year.

0u can't survive without DFW area recruits. An additional game in Dallas semi-regularly helps their exposure.

He can negotiate a plea bargain and affairs, but maybe not employment.

"Evans was arrested for DUI on June 30, 2010. The passenger in the car, then 28-year-old Courtney Fuhrmann of Atlanta, was arrested for disorderly conduct. Evans was asked for his resignation and agreed to resign from UGA."    Courtney Fuhrmann was not a relative, if you get the drift.

What kind of school hires an AD fired by Ugag? Getting arrested is just part of being affiliated with Ugag's athletic department.

True, but is exposure or Venables program the biggest issue for the Sooners in recruiting the Metroplex at this time?

Hey, I'm all for the okies scheduling home & homes with both SMU and TCU.

Makes them vulnerable to a soul-crushing OOC loss before SEC play. Yeah, Venables has proven to be a liability to 0u. I hope they can't afford to fire him anytime soon.

OU counts on recruiting Texas. Any disagree? Switzer said it was one of his program’s three pillars.

The Big 12 was perfect for them. In the original version, they got 2-3 games in Texas, every year. In the last iteration, they got 2-3 league games per year in Texas. That was more than all other blue bloods except one.

In the SEC, they get 1-2 games per year, depending upon whether TAMU is on the schedule, and where. Most years, the SEC will give other blue bloods (Georgia, Alabama, Florida,…) as many games as OU gets in Texas.

So, yes, OU needs the SMU series, not that I think of it. They probably need to ring TCU, Baylor and UH, too. Not TT- not enough recruits out there (although their recruitments of Daryl Shepard and Jack Mildren, back in the day, were infamous)

Still comes back to winning plain and simple.  Barry recruited where he wanted not because of the number of games he played there, but the games he won.  They never had a losing record under Barry, fewest wins in a season was 7 and over Top 10 finishes in his 16 years.

Yes, he ran a program in which they not only cheated, but the players were out of control to a degree I am not sure we have seen elsewhere.

Unless things have changed since I lived in the Metroplex, which family and friends say it hasn't, OU has no issue with media coverage in the area, aren't a forgotten program, and there are more than a few alums living there. They aren't Arkansas who is basically become anonymous since moving to the SEC>

A second game in the Metroplex doesn't do shit for the program if they aren't winning and in fact, it puts you in an awkward position if you don't win the game.  One advantage OU has to play against SMU and the Big 12 schools in Texas in recruiting is they play in the SEC which is just a different level of football.  That mystique for OU takes a bit of a hit if they get beat by SMU or any of the other Big 12 teams.

Any time Patterson beat a bigger conference school when TCU was moving up the conference ranks they broadcast that shit for months to anyone who would listen to them and even those who tried to ignore it.  The Frogs win in Norman in 2005 combined with the wins over Tech and Baylor twice the next two years opened some big damn doors in recruiting and gave the program some credibility.

There is more for OU to lose playing that game than there is for them to gain if they lose it, especially if they can't get their shit together which is still debatable with Venables.

Totally agree. SMU and OU are huge recruiting rivals right now. If I'm OU I'm careful about scheduling that OOC game. We played them super tight in Norman in '23.

Now - we'll see what direction the programs go in. If SMU is perennially better for a few years it may be worth it again for OU to schedule a home and home.

Agreed,  SMU has done what they need to do to position themselves to take advantage of the opportunity given to them.  Win,  draw eyeballs, and when the deck gets reshuffled again for college football they stand a very good chance of getting in because of their location.

The big key is they have to win in the ACC and when they get a chance to beat a brand they do it.

I think what is getting missed by some and it is understandable on a Texas board is that at some point programs are going to get left behind.  Tradition,  rivalries,  conference brotherhood. All that shit doesn't mean anything when the networks offer enough money.

Not taking a swipe at Texas, merely saying Texas supporters might not think about these things because they haven't ever been the school that someone said goodbye to and they won't be the next time.

There are 68 teams in the current forms of the ACC, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, and those assholes at Notre Dame.  Does anyone really think that ESPN, Fox, and/or Fox wants to have to play all those schools top dollars for their broadcast rights?

Too many schools are in too small a viewing areas for someone not to be left behind when the deal gets paid and having been through it before it will happen, but people don't expect it to happen to say one of the Mississippi schools in a state of less than 3M, or an Iowa school, or a Kansas school, or whomever the powers that be deem excess baggage unless you have been left behind and you normal the idea of loyalty among conference mates is about as tangible as amateur student athletes.

There is no way OU wants more than two Texas schools in whatever version is coming down the road.  Why allow a program that has shown it might have more financial backing than you to now build some credibility?

Makes no sense and for those who say the coaches will always insist they have those easy games in their schedule so keep the Vandy's etc...do you honestly believe what any coach thinks has influenced any of these conference changes?

SMU has already established itself as a real player in the P4. I don’t see OU losing to them as some sort of rep killer as it would have been when SMU was G5. It wouldn’t be a “good” loss but wouldn’t be all that “bad” of a loss, including with the committee. And with 14-16 playoff slots, a noncon loss to a good P4 isn’t that big of a deal unless they end up on the bubble in which case they should have done better in conference. So I don’t think there’s recruiting considerations at play, it would be a decent non con matchup without too much travel as part of a traditional home and home. Either way OU should win those games and should approach them as such, just win and it doesn’t matter.

Both OU sucks and arky’s roster has been >50% Texans going back to the early 60s.  They both just don’t have the recruiting base/population to base their recruiting in their home states.

I think roughly 50% of arky’s current student body is from the D/FW metro area.  If I remember right, over a decade ago arky waived out of state tuition for Texas students.

You touch on a few things, but the one I want to highlight is “conference loyalty”. That runs both ways.

In the ‘80s, when the NCAA was shutting down the Pony Express mess (no matter your opinion on the NCAA rules, the SMU president was personally signing off on forms stating they weren’t cheating, when he knew damned well they were cheating their ass off), the big SMU boosters decided the SWC was going down with them. They hired PIs to investigate the other schools, and found some penny ante shit Texas was doing (an assistant loaned his car to an injured player, so he could park near class. Players dropping out were given bus fare home. This was a whole different level than being given a 280Z and $2k per month, the Pony standard). They turned Texas in.

In the ‘00s, Texas proposed a B12 network. The other schools rejected it as not worth the investment (I have to think that if TCU were in the conference, CDC would have seen the value). Then, when Texas started its own network, the rest of the league turned on them.

There is a lesson here. I suspect that Mississippi State and Iowa already know it. When you’re a “little ‘un”, you need to go along with the “big ‘uns”. Tying Gulliver down didn’t work in the story and it damned sure doesn’t work in real life.

The decision who gets included isn't going to eventually be driven by the conferences or who plays nice with whom.

Hook’em!!!

Don't disagree with any of that, but in the end do you really think who they recruit is driven by where they play their games or the success of the program?

No - definitely not.  Ford needs to increase capacity on the west side or the other EZ by at least 10K in order to keep up with their new conference ties and OOC obligations.  I know they hosted FSU last year, but LSU is a different animal.  35K capacity would never host aggy or UT today.

Hook’em!!!
