Ski Season 2020/2021

For sure Purgatory has had a great season when it was forecasted to be meh.  CB is looking good... they've gotten 2 feet in a week but haven't updated the base in a week.  Should be a good 80-90" base.

So oldest (9) has taken to it in a big way. Middle (7) is getting there, but was as content to hit the sledding/tubing or just generally playing with the little one (5) in the snow.  The little one wasn’t as interested as either of the others, but has done well enough to understand how to stop, turn, and other essentials.  More than I expected from 2 days. Saw a half dozen longhorn stickers on helmets, too many aggys, and way too many fucking sooners.

Spent the last week in Mammoth.  Plenty of good wind buff up top.  Below McCoys was getting really slushy in the afternoon.  Laps all week on 23, 3, and 5.  Fun groomer bombing on 1, 2, and 10.

Saw someone obviously from Surly yesterday out at Outpost.  Didn’t get a chance to compliment the onesie.  Don’t think it was @Johnny Chimpo, maybe @Sbbruin.

What did you think?

We stayed at the Grand Lodge which worked really well for us... easy walk to the lifts and ski valet.  Parking and unloading/loading during check-in was a bit of a train-wreck but not big deal.  Location made up for it.

Mountain worked out really well for the family - they had plenty of greens and blues to make them happy.  Finally got my youngest onto some blacks with International and Keystone.  Bump runs like Monument, Twister, Jokerville, etc. were mostly empty which was great and the snow usually felt good on those.  Morning snow on International was usually icy as were some shadier runs like Sylvanite.  They softened up later in the day.

Finally had a chance to hit up some of the Extremes thanks to some people who knew the mountain so had a chance to head out to Peel, a couple of runs on the Headwall, a few different spots on the North Face, etc.  Looked over the edge at Rambo and said F that so I did Pinball instead which was fine (Watch the stumps).  Really really liked Peel and wish I had someone to go with me over to Banana and Funnel.  I don't like exploring areas like that solo.  Bad idea jeans.  Thought the North Face was a blast.   Worst run on the mountain was Robel's... super quick black cut in the trees under Ruby Road... maybe two moguls wide but just janky with a crap drop-in.  I would do the double-diamond Pinball 10 times before doing black Robel's again.  I was the only person I ever saw take that run and I understand why.  Totally pointless.

One more note on CB, if there's one thing I learned off of the T-bars is to take your time to scope out your lines carefully.  You can find straightforward lines or you can find yourself taking mandatory cliff drops... even on the easier spots like Hard Slab, Hawk's Nest, Headwall, etc.  Its the kind of areas that can get you in trouble fast.  The good news is that in some areas like the North Face, there are gates to keep you from advancing further to skier's left where stuff gets hairier over time.  I also found the Epic Mix app worked well at some points and not so well at other points due to signal issues.  I popped out Tower 11 Chutes on one run just because I wasn't sure where I was going but found a good line that dropped me under the lift.  Just know your limits.

Again, still pissed I didn't do funnel.  From what I understand other than the entrance, not much different than Upper Peel/Peel but better snow and amazing views.

Yeah - If I have to jump off a cliff in mid run I would really appreciate a lot of warnings ahead of time

How old are those skis? That looks like a major rock shot not just snow.

Rossignol Soul Skiers, 5 seasons with probably only 14-18 days at most (lost 2 years of that 5 to covid cancellations).  We think it happened in a bump run at Breck yesterday (we hit the trees a lot as well, but the cover in the woods is pretty deep still.

A rock shot of that impact would be pretty noticeable I think, and there's still pretty good cover right. now. We avoid thin cover areas when possible.

It delaminated along about a 24" line right below his bindings.

Took the youngest snowboarding at Copper last week. Ended up with decent snow Wed/Thurs which made it even better for her since she hasn’t been in fresh powder before. It was busier than I’ve seen it Thursday with the snow, Friday it was back to normal volume with no waits anywhere. May try to get one more in before end of season with the guys based on how good the snow cover was last week.

That’s a tough spot. What did the repair shop guys tell you ?

Said, "that's a new one". There's no repair for that. The interior core is splintered, and shattered along with the composite base, which is just snapped clean thru.

We did spring break and stayed in Park Cities on the Canyon side (3/12-3/19).  Got in super late Friday night/Sat morning ~2am (flight kept getting delayed) but made it to the slopes on Sat by 10:30am.

Really liked the place we stayed at.  It was the Summit right next to the orange bubble lift at Canyons.  Got new snow 2 of the days but temp was never that cold and got up in the 40s a couple of the days.  Using the bus to get back and forth between Canyons and Park City was OK.  You can use lifts to get between them but the bus was usually faster, with the exception of one day where the buses were taking a really long time and did not manage to get everyone for the trek back to Canyons.  They added another bus for that route the next day.

Was plagued by equipment failures.  soon as i got there my boa (lace system) in my snowboard boots broke.  was able to rent some the rest of the week, but got lucky in that they were not taking any walkups for rentals, but they did have a size 15 left.  Then first run of the day i get all the way up the lift with my board strapped on my left foot.  Get off and go to strap in my right foot and ankle strap is completely gone.  That's a bolt/nut that had to come completely undone.  Rode the lift back down and went to board shop and they were able to get me a replacement strap digging through their 'junk' bin.  Then got stuck on one the lifts for a solid hour as it had a meltdown.

all in all, had a blast.  kids loved it

image.png.fc084560b1fde82eef304f5e15f6157b.png

was kindof a shitshow flying back Saturday on SW, though.  we had a connection through Denver and our flight kept getting delayed.  We get to DIA and they did not hold the flight.  it took off 10 minutes after we landed.  There were 10 others in the same boat from our plane.  initially said "sorry, not sure why they did not hold that flight. next available flight is Monday at 3pm", lol wut?  Wife hammers on them for a few minutes while i look up other airlines and there is nothing to be had the whole weekend.   they finally come up with 2 spots on the last flight out to Dallas that night, but can only put the other 2 of us on standby with 2 guaranteed seats on the 6am flight on Sunday.  So me and son will go standby and wife and daughter get the seats.  Of course they delayed that flight to let connecting passengers make it so we miss on the standby list.  Get vouchers for one of the shittiest hotels ever, but made it out the next day.

We have a running contest.  Score one point for seeing and calling someone in a onesie.  Bonus 4 for getting a high-five.  Most points at end of day gets beer from the rest.

Would have scored bonus points for seeing people in metallic onesies at CB

Yeah, honestly, while not the best skier, I feel like I'm pretty good and I'd rather spend my efforts on proper gear, etc and looking like I know what I'm doing than looking like a disco ball on skis.

Meanwhile, I'm still trying to figure out who I can convince in my neighborhood to hit up A-Basin in late April/early May

F me.  Heel hooks suck.  Possible partial meniscus tear in the knee.  Anyone rehabbed from this and gotten back safely on the slopes?  Timeline?

I tore my MCL in 2016.  Did PT and never had surgery.

I completely ruptured my ACL in 2018 skiing... tore the MCL, had some kind of meniscus tear and a slight fracture.  Did PT.  No surgery.

Still skiing.

Then again, I tore my meniscus when I was 18 skateboarding and could not straighten my knee.  Had to get scoped.  Went skiing one month after the surgery.

You should be fine.  Just get it checked out.

Doing rehab.  Just pissed.  Sled work:  forward and backward pulling is helping.

It sucks but it is worth it... and if you've had enough knee injuries like me, when you come back from a ski trip with a knee that got overworked (like I just did) at least you know the protocol.  Trust the rehab guys - have them push you.  Put in the work.  You'll bounce back.

Let's see if I can get this to work this time... having issues with photos so I can't tell what order these posted in.  That said...

I think my comments below are in reverse order...

Two are looking up and down Peel when you get down to the chute.  We traversed from Forest into Peel. Still wish we went back and did funnel.

There's a shot that I think is from the Headwall which was really nice - snow was great in the afternoon.

A shot from Pinball looking up at the bump run.  After trying to peer over Rambo, Pinball was a welcome choice.

Got another shot of my skis looking into the North Face and then I headed over to Old Pro before then going over to Pinball.

Narrow run is a short black run off of Ruby Road - sucks.  Hated it.  Tight drop-in with stumps you have to avoid.  I'll pick several double-diamonds before going on that turd again and I realized why I never saw a single soul on it.

I think one of the pictures is from the open section of the Glades looking towards the mountains.  I kept veering right and ended up in Tower 11 Chutes under the Paradise Express.

F me.  Heel hooks suck.  Possible partial meniscus tear in the knee.  Anyone rehabbed from this and gotten back safely on the slopes?  Timeline?

Started skiing a few years after the first knee surgery which had both sides opened up. No issues. Tore meniscus in same knee in 2010. It totally depends on what type of tear (bucket handle etc). Bucket handle has quick recivery because they cut out the tear. Other types get the tear sewn back. Less long term issues but longer rehab. I have had no issues in 12 years. Haven't skiied on it but I would have no fear trying.

Awesome - thanks!  Always managed to bang myself up on the slopes as I ski like I'm an 18yr old on spring break.  Walloped my head in Park City last season and was probably concussed somewhat.  Year before, my FIL got off the lift, lost control, made the turn (I was around the corner facing downhill, ready to go), and ran straight into me.

Murphy's Law follows me to the mountains.....

I went over a rock on sucker snow in CB.  Totally stopped me in my tracks and I flipped over and hit my head on a rock .... with a helmet.  Never skiing without one ever again.

Dude. You need to get smarter about choosing lines without rocks.

I was coming off a run from the North Face T-Bar and it looked like a good snow covered section but was wrong.  That said, Crested Butte has no shortage of rocks.

i was diagnosed with partial tear on meniscus in my knee.  I got a cortisone shot right into the knee and that supposedly reduced the inflammation enough that it could heal.  Something about reducing inflammation and swelling to allow blood flow back to the meniscus.

It seemed to do the trick and was able to play basketball and snowboard again.  was only ~2-3 months of taking it easy and maybe 1 month of PT regimen.  my memory sucks, but it was a lot of balancing on the 1/2 squishy ball and crab walking around with resistance bands.  This was ~8 years ago I think.  I remember the USMNT in a world cup on TV during PT.

it's all about the pain and if the flap of torn meniscus is poking around where it shouldn't be.  If the tear is doing that then my ortho said it might need surgery to clean it up and trim the tear back..
