Just to throw something out there for the sake of discussion - is recruiting HS QBs a waste of time in the current landscape? You run the risk of investing a lot of resources and time into a guy without knowing how he will perform when the lights come on.

Would it be better to go out every 1-2 years and get a lower-level P4 or G5 guy that has already shown he can play and try to build a monster team around him? A la Ohio State last year or Oregon & OU this year?

Going after 5 star WRs appears to be waste of money if they are not going to see the field as freshmen. Use that money for a top RB instead who can get immediate playing time.

Do you think Michigan can't identify and develop talent?  Bama, Miami and Georgia also offered.  He's a take.

Honestly, this feels like more of a numbers issue. Michigan is consistently bringing in 5+ through recruiting and the portal and then running off non-contributors. We’ve got several in the room that should be regular students or somewhere else.

Florida’s 5* freshman WR saw the field yesterday to the tune of 6 rec for 111 yds and 2td. Alabama’s 5* freshman WR last year balled out and he wasn’t even old enough to vote. Jeremiah Smith had 1300 yards on 74 catches last year.

So, in short, the fact that they’re a freshman only seems to be a problem when they wear burnt orange. Any other jersey and they live up to expectations.

I had the same thought. You see freshmen at skill positions shining all around the country except here. I don't know if it's because Sark prefers to play upperclassmen over talented youngsters or his scheme is too hard for the young players to grasp. If you're not going to play them, why spend so much money on them? We have two 5 star WRs who are not seeing the field at all.

Not all 5 stars are created equal. DK Moore would be getting significant PT on our team right now. Dallas Wilson as well. Wingo played a lot last year.

Wingo has always been more big, straight line athlete than refined WR. He has never played physically relative to his size either.

Lockett is the only actual 5* we signed and he isn’t really a separation receiver, so he needs to add weight to not get bullied so much off the line or at the top of his routes.

Ffrench was a 5 star most of the recruiting cycle and ended the year just outside. That's why I was counting him as a 5 star. If Lockett is too light to play as a freshman, why did we spend 5 star money on him? We should have allocated more money for RBs and OLs imo. We have taken a bunch of jags in hopes of coaching them up.

College recruiting is like NFL drafts now. You don't spend 1st round money on players who are going to sit on the bench while you fill up the positions of need with bread. That kind of roster mismanagement comes home to roost.

It’s more to the fact we’re trotting Niblett out there. That guy is fucking useless. No reason McCutcheon or Lockett shouldn’t be getting every single one of his offensive reps.

I will have to agree both DK Moore and AJ Brown would both start.

McCutcheon, especially. That kid is electric. Like, for real. Seems to catch everything and understands wtf he's supposed to be doing, and yet Sark just tosses him the ball once and he gain 26 yards and then benches him. Great strategy, Sark.

Exactly and unfortunately without transfers it is not a quick fix. And we can't afford to lose any non senior starters.

Next year we could have Baker, Brooks, Cujoe, Goosby as quality starters. But those guys need to be playing on the line together. We can't have any of them playing backup roles. Basically, all you need then is a starting center with Robertson and Cruz as quality backups. That leaves Chatman and Neto as quality backups at guard and some others who are either unknown or known and not good enough. But it also means that we will be razor thin at tackle without spending the money and bringing in 2 guys to compete. And I personally think this is unlikely. More likely in my next best case scenario is that we have Turntine and Lee as backups at tackle.

For some reason this year Flood thought it was a great idea to have solid tackle backups while not having starting quality guards and centers. This can't happen. But it is not a new thing. Last year it was pretty much the same. It doesn't help that our right guard has been a disappointment compared to expectations, but in a perfect world, he would have been pushed out of the starting lineup.

Now with all that said above, I think Flood will have only 2 starters and 2 backups out of Brooks, Baker, Cujoe, and Goosby. With that decision our interior will basically be dog meat for another year with Robertson/Cruz at center and Chatman and Neto probably starting at guard with Stroh, Kibble, Chatman, and Christian backing them up. And with Turntine and Lee as redshirts. And of course we need to flip Lee for him to even be an option.

Well, with NIL as it is you aren't signing 4 guys who have the feet and size for left tackle. The better question that @Codaxx would ask is if we are signing the right type of linemen for Sark's preferred scheme. For the record, I do like our 2 commits. It just isn't nearly enough.

Film guy called out the recruiting

I don’t know why he’s having around as a 5th year senior with NFL aspirations to not play when our LG play is obviously terrible.

Yeah. The only reason that Dallas Wilson, Ryan Williams, and Jeremiah Smith were 5 star recruits is because there is no 6th star. Lockett and Ffrench might technically have been 5 stars at some point, but they were always considered a tier below those super-prospect type guys.

That's true for Jeremiah Smith, partially true for Ryan Williams, and not close to being true for Dallas Wilson.

Dallas Wilson was ranked #50 overall by 247 and #41 by on3, so he wasn't even a 5-star on either of the legitimate services, much less a "6-star". Ryan Williams was potentially going to be the top guy in his class, but he reclassified at the last minute and ended up 5th in 247 and 8th in on3. Obviously very well regarded, but he was still ranked below Cam Coleman on both sites. Was Cam Coleman also a 6-star? Smith? Yeah, he's a 6-star.

Apparently, it doesn’t matter what rank these recruits are when they show up here they regress and turn into softer than baby shit. Watching our five star cornerback, get abused and stiff, armed and thrown into the ground was embarrassing   All these top 5 classes over the last decade without shit to show for

I think this is 2-fold. Dallas Wilson was considered the next Jeramiah Smith. He was the elite of the elite. I would not put Wingo in that camp. Wingo has elite characteristics but needed some work. 2ndly, I think Sark asks a lot more from his offense and WRs. NFL offense is a cool recruiting tool, and it looks awesome when it works. It also means there is a much bigger learning curve for players.

The biggest issues with Sark's offense right now, is that he is not utilizing the entire field. Whether that is the result of play calling or Manning not seeing the whole field is debatable. We have deep outs, screens and deep post routes. Where is the TE in this offense? Where are the crossing routes that he ran at Alabama? Where are the seam routes? Everything, including the run game is designed to get wide. We have to use the middle of the field to be successful.

By who? As I posted earlier, Dallas Wilson was a composite high four-star. He wasn't a five-star on either on3 or 247. He was a great prospect. He was in no way the next Jeremiah Smith. He was like the 8th rated WR in his class.

I did not look go back and look at his ranking. I was going off reports from Spring and Summer. My bad.
