Have you heard the new Nuno Bettencourt guitar solo?

That solo was fucking unbelievable. A little dash of Eddie at the beginning, then ALL Nuno. He’s got a style and sound that’s instantly recognizable.

Side note. Anyone notice he’s playing a Washburn 4N? He played an N4 when Pornograffiti came out. A cool video about how the 4N came about.

"Who's gonna be on the cover?" Blind Melon's Christopher Thorn is going to appear in Guitar World, and he is naturally curious about "his" issue. "I hope it's not somebody like that Udo Whatsisname."

Udo? I ransack my mental file cabinet for the slim folder stamped "Great Japanese Shredders." Udo!!???

"You know," Christopher laughs. "What's the guy's name from Extreme?"

    Ah, Nuno!

"Yeah, I'd be embarrassed if it was someone like that."

I mostly knew Extreme from that cheesey ballad but it was obvious the dude can play.  He's a little closer to Vai than most players on that solo.

The drummer cracks me up -- "I'm just gonna sit back here and beat the crap out of these things while that guy does all the genius stuff."

Nuno is a badass. The song is just a'ight, not very original, pretty outdated, unless you really were a huge fan of that particular style. I'm certainly guilty of that kind of thing in other areas of music. Extreme is a really talented band of musicians, much respect, but never were really the best craftsmen of songs that stand the test of time or endless repeated listens. Rest In Peace is the only one of their songs I get a hankering to hear once in a while. I was tired of the new one well before the awesome solo took place (and really only the second half of it was all that). I guess that's why we're only really hearing about the solo.

Eh. I bet Brickhorn could play it.

Obviously that solo is epic but it’s part of a song that doesn’t really grab me. It has a bit of a Velvet Revolver vibe but not quite as good (to me).

I’ve always like those N4 guitars. Here’s an old song with another guy playing a solo that I like better on a N4. It’s not as technically spectacular as the Nuno solo, but I just like it better in context of the song. Skip to 2:25 if the song isn’t your bag:

I can't believe yall are omitting the one Extreme song that isn't totally horrid, Hole Hearted. Also known as To Be With You, the prequel.

To Be With You was Mr. Big. But I get your gist.

Nuno has speed and tone. I prefer him over Paul Gilbert, Vai, Satriani who IMO, just wank.

Ha. No, probably not. I mean, any of us could fake it with enough practice. But as technically impressive as that solo is (and it is technically impressive), it doesn’t move me enough to invest the kind of time and effort required to play a passable version. Which would be a lot.

Are we evolving this thread into the “Monster Solos” thread? Because if so — hell, even if not — here’s one of my favorite examples of blending technical mastery with musicality. Bonus points for Klaus Meine in heels. Skip to 0:40 for the solo:

I’m not typically a fan of neoclassical players. But that solo fucking rocks.

I was listening to my random tunes drive in the car a little while and hit Richie's solo in Pictures Of Home. That's one of my favorite all time solos and solo sounds in rock history. It's not even close to one of his flashiest, but damn it just sounds so perfect, with the classic Richie vibrato in the key money shot spot.

Get the funk out was always sort of a guilty pleasure I have to admit.

Nuno can shred no doubt. Song and solo were just meh to me though. That stuff just doesn’t resonate as much with me at 54 as it did at 16 so who knows.

Love the old school Scorpions.

Here’s one of my favorite old school solos that never ever gets talked about. I don’t know anything about the guy but homeboy just rips. My dad pointed this solo it out to me when this song came out. He would always crank up the car stereo when the solo started. Starts at 1:29

What about Yngvie fucking Malmsteen?

No. Just no.

What makes guys like EVH and Nuno good isn't just that they can shred, it's that they do it in a way that work within the song. There's phrasing and emotions and shit in there.

This solo isn't just technical wizardry for its own sake. You're hearing something amazing and it works within the song.

I got to meet Chuck Mangione in 1982.  A bunch of us went with one of our Cavaliers hornline instructors to a Mangione concert at Ravinia, just north of Chicago.  She had gone to college with him.  He could not have been a more gracious dude, and he was still riding high on fame at the time.

I saw him in around 92 at Moody at SMU and everyone on that stage fuckin brought it. Land of Make Believe French Horn section for the win.

The whole album is out.

The guitar work is first-rate throughout, and they cover a lot of styles.

The problem with it, though, is having to also have to deal with Cherone's lyrics.

My kingdom for an instrumental...

#1. This guy is about 100X better than me.

#2. Everybody posting on this thread is about 100X better than me.

#3. The problem I have with this style is that it is about 90% playing the same 2 or 3 licks at different places on the neck.

#4. This guy is about 100X better than me.

#3 is very true for the style on the whole. But the really good players, like Vai, Satriani, Edward and Nuno, are doing so much more than that.
