That confused me, because their national team kit is adidas as well, no?

It seemed like she thought that something would be visible on her shirt, but it wasn’t.

Or maybe she had something written on a third shirt underneath. No sé.

This ref is awful.

The knee for the yellow card shouldn’t have been a yellow.

The injured girl should have left the field.

The James girl for England got wiped out right outside the box. (No call)

Hermoso got kicked hard on the edge of the English box. (No call)

The “professional foul” taking down James in the midfield should have drawn a yellow.

Adidas will turn it into a billboard all across Spain with the adidas clearly visible and the message printed below the photo.

She is an adidas player (you can tell from her shoes) and they can’t do an ad campaign with her Barcelona kit (NIKE) for winning the Champions League.

PS- “Mecha” & “Mechi” are nicknames for “Mercedes” in Argentina, so I am sure that “Merchi” is a nickname for Mercedes in Spain.

How in the hell did Japan beat Spain, 4-0, earlier in the same tournament?

With its speedy forwards and counterattacking style, Japan matches up well against the slow Spanish defenders. But Japan also had crazy shooting accuracy in that game and made the most of their few chances. Spain dominated possession (something like 77%) but didn’t finish. So kind of a perfect storm.

1) ☝️ Correct.

Japan has the technique & speed to beat Spain.

Japan is fucked against large women on set pieces.

Japan would have likely beaten Spain again, but a larger team knocked them out along the way.

2) I was wrong about Olga, the goal scorer, being on Barcelona.

She was one three starters from Real Madrid. (An adidas team… fascism.)

Fuck this guy.  This was a fuck you move because the Spanish Federation thinks it’s untouchable now.  I guess Hermoso plays in League MX and wasn’t part of the rebellion but World Cup or not, they need to do a house cleaning of that federation and coach.

Spanish football federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales plans to resign Friday after FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against him over his unsolicited kiss of player Jenni Hermoso, sources have confirmed to ESPN's Rodrigo Faez.

Rubiales' position had grown increasingly untenable since his behaviour after Spain won the World Cup by beating England in the final in Sydney this past Sunday.

The kiss forced on the lips of Hermoso has garnered most of the headlines, but he was also seen effusively hugging other Spain players and kissing them on the cheek.

Before that, immediately after Spain's victory, he had also grabbed his crotch in a victory gesture with 16-year-old Princess Infanta Sofía and Queen Letizia of Spain standing nearby.

Rubiales' immediate response was to label those criticising his behaviour as "idiots," although as the backlash grew, he later published an apology.

The incident sparked outrage within and outside Spain, with many, including government ministers, demanding his resignation.

Spain's acting prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, said the apology was "insufficient and inadequate" as the pressure began to mount on Rubiales to step down from his role. Meanwhile, the acting second deputy prime minister, Yolanda Díaz, called for Rubiales to "resign" from his post after his actions.

High-ranking figures across the government and Spanish sport expressed similar opinions. Irene Montero, the minister for equality, described it as a "form of sexual violence," with clubs also weighing in on the situation.

Pressure continued to mount during the week after FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales and after Hermoso, in a joint statement with her union, said that such acts "should never go unpunished."

Lower-league side Sant Andreu were the first to demand Rubiales' resignation via a statement, while Ángel Torres, president of LaLiga side Getafe, condemned his "deplorable behaviour" and said he should not remain as the RFEF president "for even a minute more."

Internationally, Rubiales' behaviour was condemned by United States forward Megan Rapinoe, who said the incident shows a "deep level of misogyny and sexism in that federation and in that man."

Regional leaders of the RFEF held a crisis meeting in Madrid on Thursday to discuss Rubiales' future and options for a potential successor, a source told Reuters.

The favourites to succeed Rubiales are Pedro Rocha, head of the Extremadura football federation, and Pablo Lozano, head of the Andalusia federation, the source said.

Rubiales, 46, was elected as president in 2018, and his tenure has been fraught with controversy and big decisions.

Just months into the job, he sacked Spain coach Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the World Cup after it emerged that he had a pre-agreement to join Real Madrid after the tournament.

Rubiales also faced a backlash for his decision to take the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia in collaboration with Gerard Piqué, who was an active player for Barcelona at the time. Rubiales vehemently denied that any conflict of interest existed in the deal.

There have also been complaints, from his uncle and the former director of his cabinet, that he used RFEF money to organise sex parties, and an investigation is ongoing into allegations that he used federation cash to take a woman on a trip to New York.

Meanwhile, the Spanish Footballers Association (AFE) called for him to be removed from his position for allegations that he spied on the president, David Aganzo -- accusations Rubiales denies.

Last September, the RFEF was at the centre of a crisis when 15 players from the women's national team said that, because of the federation's lack of support and issues relating to the coaching team, they did not feel comfortable playing for Spain.

Rubiales' response was to back the coach, Jorge Vilda, with the dispute disrupting Spain's preparation for the World Cup. In the end, three of the 15 returned for the tournament after certain changes were made, seven refused to do so and five were not selected.

Information from Reuters was used in this report.

I hear Marion Barry's "Bitch set me up!" in the background...

Luis Rubiales refuses to step down as Spanish football federation president

image.png.c17ad1dee62bb0a348a9e054825d3107.png

Luis Rubiales has refused to step down as president of the Spanish football federation following his behaviour at the Women's World Cup final on Sunday.

He had earlier grabbed his crotch as he celebrated at the final whistle.

"I will not resign, I will not resign," he told an extraordinary general assembly called by the federation. "A social assassination is taking place."

Rubiales apologised for the kiss on Monday before Fifa, world football's governing body, opened disciplinary proceedings against him on Thursday.

On Friday he apologised for grabbing his crotch while celebrating in the VIP area in Stadium Australia, with Queen Letizia of Spain and her 16-year-old daughter standing nearby.

Widespread reports in Spain suggested Rubiales would announce his resignation on Friday - but instead he vowed to "fight until the end".

"I'm ready to be vilified to defend my ideals," he added. "I don't deserve this manhunt I have been suffering.

"I want to apologise without reservation for everything that happened in the box, when in a moment of euphoria I grabbed that part of my body that you have already seen.

"Of course I have to apologise, to the Queen, and to everyone who has felt offended. I have been in countless boxes and I have never behaved like that."

Kiss was 'mutual and consensual'

Rubiales - who was elected to his role in May 2018 - was repeatedly applauded as he addressed the assembly, which the Spanish football federation (RFEF) called "as a matter of urgency".

He defended his actions by saying he was trying to console Hermoso after she had a late penalty saved by Mary Earps.

"Jenni was the one who lifted me up," he said. "I told her to 'forget about the penalty' and I said to her 'a little peck?' and she said 'OK'.

"It was a spontaneous kiss. Mutual, euphoric and consensual. That's the key. A consensual 'peck' is enough to get me out of here?

"There are many people who, although silent, are supporting me. More than those who are against me."

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Rubiales' initial apology was "not enough" and second deputy prime minister Yolanda Diaz joined those calling on him to resign.

Futpro, a players' union representing Hermoso, said the incident should not go unpunished while the 33-year-old forward said it would "defend my interests" in the matter.

The Pachuca player, who has 101 caps, initially said on Instagram she "didn't like" Rubiales' actions but a statement released later on her behalf defended him.

Rubiales also talked of extending the contract of controversial coach Jorge Vilda and offering him a salary of 500,000 euros.

Vilda, 42, survived a player revolt last September and the RFEF continued to back him, posting 'VILDA IN' on Spain's official X account after the team's World Cup triumph.

"Jorge Vilda, they wanted to do to you the same thing that they are doing to me now," Rubiales said. "We've been through a lot, but we've been together."

'Rubiales cannot continue in office' - reaction

Rubiales' defiant stance has been met with widespread condemnation.

"What we have seen today at the federation assembly is unacceptable," Spain's second deputy prime minister Yolanda Diaz wrote on social network X, formerly known as Twitter.

"The government must act and take urgent measures: impunity for macho actions is over. Rubiales cannot continue in office."

Minister for equality Irene Montero, who has previously called for Rubiales to resign, said on X: "Silence has not worked and discrediting the victim, her support networks and the feminist social demand for the guarantee of the right to sexual freedom will not work either. Only yes is yes."

Victor Francos, secretary of state for sport, told Spanish radio station La Ser: "We are going to act. We have activated all the mechanisms to take the appropriate measures."

Javier Tebas, head of Spain's top division La Liga, said it was "very difficult to explain what is happening with Luis Rubiales".

He added that the sport was having to "live with dealing with him as president of the RFEF. The misogynistic gestures, the profane expressions, the protocol disaster and the insults of this latest global embarrassment are not a surprise".

Tebas went on to allege serious criminal allegations against the president, adding: "The list of women and men aggrieved by Luis Rubiales these years is too long and this must stop."

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague posted on social media: "Against all the reporting, against the advice of people close to him, against the wish of the government (who will now go after him), Rubiales surprises even his close circle and insists he will not resign.

"Embarrassing, his explanations are obsolete. He will have to be pushed out," he added.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Spanish football presenter Semra Hunter said: "I am both incredibly gobsmacked and at the same time not.

"There was an incredible amount of pressure both internally here within Spain and externally from basically the entire world, so in that sense it has come as a surprise because everyone this morning expected he was going to be addressing the assembly by saying yes [he will resign].

"What's really sad about this is that he's doubling down on the fact he's saying this kiss - he's not even calling it a kiss, he's saying it's a peck - was consensual.

"He insists it was mutual and he says it was spontaneous, and so he's still defending himself saying he's done nothing wrong."

Iglesias makes himself unavailable for national team

Former Manchester United and Spain goalkeeper David de Gea wrote "my ears are bleeding" on X, while Iker Casillas, Spain's World Cup-winning captain in 2010, simply said: "Embarrassing."

The former Real Madrid goalkeeper later added: "We should have spent these five days talking about our girls, of the joy they gave us all, to boast of a title that we did not have in women's football but... "

Barcelona midfielder Alexia Putellas, the 2021 and 2022 Ballon d'Or winner, wrote on X: "This is unacceptable. It's over. With you team-mate @jennihermoso."

Real Betis striker Borja Iglesias, who won the second of his two caps for Spain in March, said: "I am sad and disappointed. As a footballer and as a person I don't feel represented by what happened today. I find it unfortunate that they continue to press and focus on a colleague.

"Wearing the Spanish national team shirt is one of the greatest things that has happened to me in my career. I don't know if at some point I will be an option again, but I have made the decision not to return to the national team until things change and this type of act does not go unpunished."

Players' union Fifpro said it "again calls for immediate disciplinary action" against Rubiales and has written to Uefa, of which Rubiales is one of six vice-presidents, "requesting that it starts disciplinary proceedings".

"Any lack of action by authorities in addressing the conduct of Mr Rubiales would send an entirely unacceptable and damaging message to the football industry and wider society," Fifpro added.

So his "ideals" are unsolicited kisses and grabbing his nuts while standing next to the 16-year-old princess of Spain?

In the last article posted, he says that he asked if he could give a kiss (maybe “a peck”?) and then received an affirmative response before planting one on Hermoso.

Could be a lie, could be that she thought that it would be cheek-to-cheek kiss sound “kiss”, could be that she though that it would be his lips to her cheek…

But 99.999999% doubtful that it was a “You can hold my head, kiss me on the lips, have it filmed & photographed, and then I’m going to start getting shit from my teammates once we are back in the locker room and this will soon be a worldwide shit storm “Yes.”

Americans have stepped down from the U.S. Senate for much less and Americans have remained the President of the USA after having done much more, and maybe this guy has learned something:

”You never get to keep you position if you resign from your position.”

…and he’s right. 🤷‍♂️

Jenni Hermoso says she did not consent to be kissed by Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales - as 81 players confirm they will not play for Spain's women's team until he is removed from his post.

Rubiales has refused to resign after kissing forward Hermoso on the lips following Spain's Women's World Cup final win over England in Sydney.

The Spanish government started legal proceedings seeking to suspend the 46-year-old, while Fifa has also launched disciplinary proceedings.

Rubiales had been widely expected to resign at an extraordinary general assembly called by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), but instead said "I don't deserve this manhunt".

He added: "Jenni was the one who lifted me up. I told her to 'forget about the penalty [that Mary Earps saved]' and I said to her 'a little peck?' and she said 'OK'.

"It was a spontaneous kiss. Mutual, euphoric and consensual. That's the key. A consensual 'peck' is enough to get me out of here?"

Pachuca player Hermoso released a long statement on social media, saying: "I want to make clear that at no time did the conversation to which Mr Luis Rubiales refers to in his address take place and, above all, was his kiss ever consensual."

She added his claims were "categorically false and part of the manipulative culture that he has generated".

"I feel the need to report this incident because I believe no person, in any work, sports or social setting should be a victim of these types of non-consensual behaviours. I felt vulnerable and a victim of impulsive-driven, sexist, out-of-place act, without any consent on my part," she continued.

"Quite simply, I was not respected."

She added that she was put "under continuous pressure" to help with a "statement that could justify" Rubiales' actions - and so were her family, friends and team-mates.

"These types of incidents add to a long list of situations that the players have been denouncing. This incident is the final straw and what everyone has been able to witness on live television also comes with attitudes like the one we saw this morning [Friday] and have been part of our team's daily life for years," she added.

A statement from England's Lionesses, who lost to Spain in the final, said the incident was "unacceptable".

It added: "The behaviour of those who think they are invincible must not be tolerated and people shouldn't take any convincing to take action against any form of harassment.

"We stand with you, Jenni Hermoso."

A statement by players' union Futpro was signed by a host of players, including all 23 members of the Spain squad which just won the World Cup.

It read: "After everything that happened during the delivery of medals of the Women's World Cup, we want to state that all the players who sign this letter will not return to a call for the national team if the current leaders continue."

Spain's next game is against Sweden in the Nations League on 22 September.

Borja Iglesias, who plays for Real Betis, said earlier on Friday he would not play for the men's national team again while Rubiales is in charge.

The Spanish government will ask Rubiales to explain himself to a Spanish court as soon as possible, secretary of sport Victor Francos said earlier on Friday.

If the administrative court deems he violated the professional sports code, he could then be suspended.

Meanwhile, Fifa will look at whether his actions constitute violations of Article 13 in its disciplinary code, concerning offensive behaviour and fair play.

Luis Rubiales: Spanish football federation will take legal action over Jennifer Hermoso 'lies'

Quote

Rubiales has refused to resign after kissing forward Hermoso on the lips following Spain's Women's World Cup final win over England in Sydney.

Hermoso said on Friday she did not consent, but the federation has questioned her version of events.

"The evidence is conclusive," it said. "Mr President has not lied."

In a statement by players' union Futpro, which is representing 33-year-old Hermoso, she is quoted as saying "in no case did I seek to raise (lift) the president" while they embraced on the podium.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said: "The RFEF and Mr President will demonstrate each of the lies that are spread either by someone on behalf of the player or, if applicable, by the player herself.

We wondered if the Spanish women winning it all would help shine a light on the problems at the Spanish FA. You could say yes.
