Source: Shane Beamer is adding another SEC coach to offensive staff

By Doug Samuels -    January 3, 2021

According to sources, Shane Beamer is making another key addition from the SEC.  Sources tell FootballScoop that Arkansas receivers coach Justin Stepp is joining the Gamecocks staff.   We understand the move will mark a homecoming, as Stepp was born in Columbia and attended high school within a half hour of the stadium he’ll now be coaching in on Saturday afternoons. His coaching career actually began at Fort Mill HS (SC), where he worked with the receivers and in strength and conditioning.

Stepp, in his third season with the Razorbacks, was the lone holdover on Sam Pittman’s staff from the previous staff under Chad Morris.  A former finalist for the FootballScoop Wide Receivers Coach of the Year, Stepp is considered one of the game’s bright young minds in developing receivers. Back in 2018 he was selected to take part in the AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute – a program aimed at identifying and developing premier, future leaders in the football coaching profession.  Early in his coaching career, Stepp worked as a graduate assistant at Clemson, and has coached the wide receivers at Appalachian State and SMU prior to leaving for Fayeteville with Morris.

Texas could do a lot worse than Turner for the OL job.  I don't give a rat's ass about the "scandals".

Ouch. Guess I didn't watch them after midseason when they beat App State.

That program consistently has the most high-level political interference for the most who-gives-a-shit results.

That street goes both ways. The AD and university officials also dabble in a lot more politics than you would expect. There’s a both of push vs pull going on here. That being said, this is probably the biggest powerplay so far in this saga.

WVU must be thrilled that Marshall gets all the weird meddling

"Meanwhile, Michigan presented football coach Jim Harbaugh a five-year contract extension this week (he’s yet to sign it, per an industry source) after leading the Wolverines to a 49-22 record (.690) the past six seasons."

We assume he's waiting to see what his NFL options are?

Baylor: The deal is done sources tell FootballScoop, Jeff Grimes is coming to Waco to serve as the Bears’ new offensive coordinator.

"Baylor is set to hire Jeff Grimes as its new offensive coordinator, sources confirmed to FootballScoop on Monday morning. Yahoo’s Pete Thamel first reported the news.  Grimes recently completed his third season as the offensive coordinator at BYU; his 2020 offense was among the best in the nation. BYU tied for the national lead in yards per play (7.84) and tied for third in scoring (43.5 points per game).  The Cougars ranked third in the nation in plays of 10+ yards (234) and 20+ yards (83) and led the country in plays of 30+ yards (45). Quarterback Zach Wilson developed into an expected first-round pick.

A longtime offensive line coach, Grimes directed the O-line for Hardin-Simmons, Boise State, Arizona State, BYU, Colorado, Auburn, Virginia Tech and LSU before becoming BYU’s offensive coordinator. He held run game coordinator responsibilities at Arizona State, Colorado, Virginia Tech and LSU.  A Garland, Texas, native, Grimes played at Texas A&M under RC Slocum and earned a Master’s degree at UTEP. He also deposited GA stints at A&M and Rice.

At Baylor, Grimes will inherit an offense that surpassed only Kansas in yards per play (4.44) and scoring (23.3 points per game) in the Big 12. Longtime starting quarterback Charlie Brewer transferred to Utah, meaning the 2021 campaign will be a complete makeover for Dave Aranda’s team.

Baylor: Shawn Bell is being promoted to quarterbacks coach, Max Olson tweets. He worked with the tight ends in 2020 and with the offensive line in 2018-19.

Cincinnati DC Marcus Freeman to LSU in the same role. Maybe. Not a good move for him. LSU is gonna be a dumpster fire for as long as Ogeron is there.

Isn't he the guy who lived at Fickell's house?  During the bowl they made it appear that the two were deeply in love.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/college-football-coaching-carousel-tracker-grades-analysis-on-all-2020-21-hires-and-changes/

Are any more FBS jobs expected to come open besides the few possible jumps to the NFL everyone is keeping an eye on? According to the link the only open job at this point is Marshall, pretty slow carousel year really. I guess that's to be expected after the weird COVID season.

I was hoping this would be the year Elko took another job but I guess there just isn't enough gigs available for guys like that to make the jump. Everything kind of gets pushed back another year.

They'll be a few more openings as a couple coaches move to the NFL.  Problem is teams are looking more for offensive minded coaches right now.

Wait for Northwestern to possible open up... then circle the Elko wagons.

Man, Arizona got a good HC in Jedd Fisch. He is on with Colin Cowherd right now. Jedd has coached under: Brian Billick, Mike Shanahan, Pete Carroll, Jim Harbaugh and Bill Belichick. That's a mix of personalities to learn under. It will be interesting to see how his staff pans out. But Jedd Fisch is a good get for them. JMO.

Another FBS offensive coordinator joins Baylor staff

By Zach Barnett -    January 5, 2021

It’s been a busy Monday for Dave Aranda’s staff at Baylor continues into Tuesday. Jeff Grimes was been formally announced as the Bears’ offensive coordinator, and Shawn Bell, a former BU quarterback himself, moved from tight ends to quarterbacks.

But that’s not all.

On Tuesday Baylor announced Ryan Pugh will be the Bears’ offensive line coach and Chansi Stuckey the team’s wide receivers coach.  Pugh was most recently the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Troy and has an extensive history working under Grimes.  The pair first linked up at Auburn, where Grimes was the Tigers’ offensive line coach and Pugh an All-SEC performer and a Rimington Trophy finalist for the nation’s top center on the 2010 national championship team.  Pugh quickly moved into coaching as Grimes’s GA at Auburn in 2012 and later worked under Grimes at Virginia Tech, LSU and BYU.

“I’m thrilled to add Chansi and his tremendous energy to our staff,” Aranda said. “I am fired up to see the environment that he is going to create with our wide receivers. I look forward to all the possibilities of what he can bring to our program with his communication skills, his heart and his boundless energy. Having played the position in the NFL and having experience with the receivers at Clemson, he is going to be a truly great addition to our program.”
