Southern Miss loses their interim coach...

Southern Miss interim coach Scotty Walden leaves for Austin Peay while dealing with COVID-19

By Ben Kercheval          19 hrs ago

Southern Miss interim coach Scotty Walden is set to become the new coach at Austin Peay. A press conference for the new hire will take place on Monday, Nov. 2. At just 30 years old, Walden is the youngest head coach at the Division I level.

"Today, we welcome one of the most energetic and innovative young coaches in the country to lead our football team," said athletic director Gerald Harrison in a statement. "In Coach Walden, we have found a man who is passionate about the student-athlete experience, energized about being part of the university and Clarksville-Montgomery County community, and excited to join us in our relentless pursuit of excellence.

"Scotty is a new-age CEO for a new era of college football. He is a tireless worker, a motivator, a dogged recruiter, and a person who possesses an infectious personality that will lead us back to the OVC Championship and beyond. I am thrilled to welcome Scotty, Callie, and Luca to the Austin Peay family, and I look forward to our opportunity to officially welcome them Monday."

Per Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports, Southern Miss assistant Tim Billings will be the school's third head coach this season. Billings, the team's defensive coordinator, is in his fifth season with the program.

Walden took over as interim coach of the Golden Eagles one game into the season after coach Jay Hopson resigned following a 32-21 loss to South Alabama. He has been on the sideline for three games -- two losses against Louisiana Tech and Tulane and a win over North Texas -- but missed the game against Liberty due to a COVID-19 diagnosis. Southern Miss, 1-4, has also had two games postponed due to COVID-19.

Austin Peay has navigated the 2020 season without its coach, Mark Hudspeth, who resigned before the start of the season due to personal reasons. The Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle reported that Hudspeth was already serving a 20-day suspension from June 17 to July 10 for "conduct that is clearly contrary to the character and responsibilities of a person occupying the position of Head Football Coach and which negatively or adversely affects the reputation of the University or its athletic programs in any material way."

Austin Peay, which played three games this fall, has a spring football schedule to prepare for in the Ohio Valley Conference starting in February.

Walden's ascent in the coaching ranks is one of college football's wildest stories. He joined the Southern Miss program four years ago as an assistant after spending one season as the head football coach at Division III East Texas Baptist University. He also previously served as the offensive coordinator at East Texas Baptist and Sul Ross State. In his first year at Sul Ross in 2012, Walden's offense led the entire NCAA, averaging 581.9 yards per game and 48.8 points per game.

Is college football's coaching carousel about to start spinning?

https://247sports.com/college/texas/LongFormArticle/2020-college-football-coaching-carousel-Tom-Herman-Will-Muschamp-Jim-Harbaugh-Brent-Venables-Luke-Fickell-154597632/#154597632_7

Here's the Mensa section...

TOM HERMAN, TEXAS

Tom Herman picked up a much-needed win with the 41-34 overtime upset of No. 6 Oklahoma State on the road, but it hasn't saved his job quite yet. Remember, this is a team expected to be in the Big 12 title game this season, and while that may happen, anything short of a trip to the championship will put his job in jeopardy.

Fans and big-time boosters are not happy. Tom Herman’s lone 10-win season in 2018 was supposed to be the sign of things to come, especially with Sam Ehlinger at quarterback, but the Longhorns have instead fell short of expectations. That's not acceptable at Texas, where the money flows even during economic turmoil across the globe.

Herman’s buyout is $15.4 million, a price tag boosters will help pay to get rid of the coach if he finishes with four or more losses this season. Failing to win the Big 12, particularly when rival Oklahoma is winning it every year, is bad enough. Falling short of winning the title (and losing head-to-head) in a “down” year for the Sooners when you have what many thought would be a Heisman candidate in Ehlinger? That’s enough to make a change at the top.

The search likely begins and ends with former Ohio State and Florida coach Urban Meyer. The FOX Sports analyst will demand a huge salary for him and his staff. Is Texas ready to ante up?

Candidates: Urban Meyer

Early Vanderbilt candidates include sitting HCs, top assistants

By John Brice -
 November 29, 2020

The winless Commodores, nonetheless, present some attractive elements to potential candidates. Yes, the academic rigors and recruiting constraints at Vanderbilt can be a deterrent.

But that SEC draw is real, as is Vanderbilt’s location in one of America’s “It” cities in Nashville, which has been among the fastest-growing metropolitan areas across the past 20 years.

And James Franklin showed Vanderbilt could win at levels the program had not seen in decades in his run atop the Commodores’ ship before Mason.

Plus, don’t forget the bottom line: Vanderbilt has shown it will pay top dollar. According to the USA Today college football coaches’ salary database, Mason was earning more than $3.5 million this season – a top-40 salary in all of college football, ahead of the likes of Florida State, North Carolina, Arkansas, N.C. State, Duke and myriad other Power-5 residents.

So, it’s not surprise that an attractive group of sitting head coaches and up-and-coming assistants are emerging as potential candidates for the SEC post.

  • Army head coach Jeff Monken.
  • Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea.
  • Alabama associate head coach/running backs coach Charles Huff.
  • Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis.
  • Charlotte head coach Will Healy.
  • Tulane coach Willie Fritz.
  • Coastal Carolina head coach Jamey Chadwell.
  • Memphis defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre
  • Ole Miss offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby.
  • Air Force coach Troy Calhoun

Some talk about Neal Brown with SC was heating up this weekend but he shot that down pretty soundly.

I'm betting the Cocks end up with Shane Beamer at this point.

If the VT job comes open, would Shane Beamer take it?

Sources: Gamecocks search drawing near close

By John Brice -   December 3, 2020

South Carolina, the first Southeastern Conference program this season to make a coaching change when it fired Will Muschamp last month, has both zeroed in on its finalists and a targeted date to wrap up its coaching search sources tell FootballScoop.  The Gamecocks, despite Muschamp being owed approximately $13 million following his dismissal, have cast a wide net that has included multiple sitting head coaches, current and former NFL coaches, young, up-and-coming coaches and, according to multiple sources, at least one believed mystery candidate.

With athletics director Ray Tanner and Bob Caslen the point men, plus contracting with Ventura Partners as the school’s first to assist the search, multiple sources on Thursday told FootballScoop that the Gamecocks have targeted Sunday to conclude their search.  “That’s their goal, although if they can get a sitting head coach, they might wait,” said one source with knowledge of the search.  Added another, “I just know they want to announce it on Sunday, if possible.”

The Gamecocks at least talked to current Houston Texans assistant Chris Rumph, a USC alum and former Gamecocks assistant coach with deep SEC ties, and also have been linked to conversations with former Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn. USC also spoke with Army coach Jeff Monken, whose strong ties with Caslen and track record helped Monken with some early traction.  But the search largely has focused on Louisiana coach Billy Napier, among the very first people the Gamecocks brass spoke to after Muschamp was fired, and Oklahoma associate head coach Shane Beamer, a former Gamecocks assistant and recruiting coordinator, as well as the son of Hall of Fame coach Frank Beamer.  “There’s multiple head coaches still in the mix,” per a source.

Though Beamer, always a strong candidate, has emerged as the potential leader for the position, Napier has remained involved and was asked for follow-up talks with the Gamecocks. A Cookeville, Tennessee, native, Napier had a five-year run at Clemson that included time as the offensive coordinator and also logged five years on Nick Saban’s Alabama staff.  Coastal Carolina’s Jamey Chadwell also has been linked to the vacancy amidst Chadwell guiding the Chanticleers along a season of never-before-seen success for the Conway, South Carolina, program. The Chanticleers are undefeated and ranked No. 18 in the latest College Football Playoffs rankings; they host similarly undefeated and 13th-ranked BYU on Saturday.

Both Louisville coach Scott Satterfield and West Virginia coach Neal Brown also have been mentioned in connection to the South Carolina vacancy – to the point that both coaches publicly addressed the chatter.  Sources indicated the Gamecocks have been as persistent and thorough as possible as they have identified candidates and gauged interest for either initial or follow-up interviews.  One thing that has perhaps aided Beamer, per sources with knowledge of the process, has been the projected staff that Beamer has pitched to USC. It’s unclear if Beamer could perhaps entice Rumph to return to his alma mater as a potential defensive coordinator and also tab Garrett Riley as his offensive coordinator, as one source in Columbia, S.C., indicated to FootballScoop. Industry sources have shared the idea of long-time Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster potentially having a role on a Beamer led staff.

Both Beamer and Napier are deeply connected and respected in the coaching community. There is no doubt each would be able to assemble an impressive staff.

With the early signing period beginning December 16th, the Gamecocks want this hire on board with enough time to make a positive difference for this signing class.

More details emerge on Michigan’s contract offer to Jim Harbaugh

John U. Bacon is in with another scoop.

By Anthony Broome@anthonytbroome  Dec 7, 2020

The topic of Jim Harbaugh’s contract with Michigan Football has taken priority over a potential game with the Ohio State Buckeyes this upcoming weekend, and probably rightfully so. It has long felt like time for Michigan to pick a direction one way or another and it seems like their offer is on the table.

After rumors emerged of a contract extension looming over the weekend, author John U. Bacon put on his reporter’s hat once again to share some details of what is happening behind the scenes. For those not in the know, he has written several books with inside info on Michigan and is as connected as it comes in Ann Arbor circles.

Bacon tweeted out that Michigan has offered a contract with a lower base salary and buyout that would be incentive laden and still allow him the resources he needs to hire the top assistants he possibly can.

“UM AD Warde Manuel has discussed with Jim Harbaugh a new contract with lower base salary and buyout, though with good provisions to hire top assistants and large incentives for performance,” Bacon tweeted on Monday night.

“Harbaugh can now accept, negotiate, or decline. At least five NFL teams have expressed an interest in hiring him – per usual – though not clear if any have made firm offers yet.”

There have been rumors floating around about the deal being for three years, but it is unclear if that is the current term being discussed.  It seems like the ball is now in Harbaugh’s court to counter and negotiate, sign the deal as is or walk away. The NFL rumors have been persistent since he arrived at Michigan, but this is one of the first times we have heard legitimate buzz that there is interest from teams in the league.

Harbaugh has compiled a 49-22 record in six seasons at Michigan so far, but is 11-10 in the last 21 games played with this year being a bottoming out of sorts at 2-4 with a game still looming against Ohio State (if they play it). Should he return, it seems a nuking of the staff would be in order, though it remains what that might look like.

It looks like we are back to Harbaugh Watch and following the updates as they come in, though this is all very different than six Decembers ago.

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel on Tuesday said he and coach Jim Harbaugh will sit down after the season to discuss any type of extension and where the program is headed moving forward.

"How rumors get started about things before Jim and I sit down and have a conversation, I'm not going to get into," Manuel said. "That's not for me to try to track down, but that's where that is, and that's where we'll be at the end of the season."

Reports surfaced earlier this week that Manuel had offered a contract extension to Harbaugh.

Update: Vandy has search firm, interviews ongoing for HC job

By John Brice -   December 8, 2020

Vanderbilt University did not play a football game last week, but it has moved forward in its search for the program’s next football coach.

First-year Commodores athletics director Candice Story Lee announced Nov. 29 that school had dismissed head coach Derek Mason amidst a winless season and a 3-17 mark since the start of the 2019 season.

Multiple sources told FootballScoop.com that Vanderbilt’s vacancy has drawn significant interest from both the collegiate and professional levels, with former NFL head coaches Jeff Fisher and Bill O’Brien said to have expressed their interest in the job.

Vanderbilt has retained Parker Executive Search to coordinate its efforts to find its next head coach, and the school has begun the interview process.

Per sources with direct knowledge, Vanderbilt on Sunday interviewed Notre Dame defensive coordinator and former Commodores player Clark Lea for its opening. The school also has already discussed the opening and made plans to discuss the vacancy with Coastal Carolina’s Jamey Chadwell, Charlotte’s Will Healy and Army’s Jeff Monken. Alabama running backs coach Charles Huff and a list of others have expressed interest in the job, sources told FootballScoop.com.

Buffalo coach Lance Leipold is another name to monitor who is believed to have interest in the vacancy, per sources. Leipold has Buffalo undefeated amidst this shortened season, and the Bulls have clinched a berth in the Mid-American Conference Championship on Dec. 18. A six-time national champion coach atop Wisconsin-Whitewater, including three-straight from 2009-11, at the NCAA D-III level, Leipold has guided Buffalo to a 25-9 mark in its last 34 games, including multiple berths in the MAC title bout and the school’s first-ever bowl win last season against Healy’s Charlotte squad.

Multiple sources on Tuesday told FootballScoop.com that it would be premature to indicate that Vanderbilt already had zeroed in on a single candidate. Certainly, Chadwell is firmly in the mix but Vanderbilt already “had interest in” Monken a few weeks ago, sources said. Monken’s unique triple-option offense has been a success throughout his coaching stops, but he’s also indicated a willingness to tailor his system to best fit his personnel.

An assistant coach at an SEC rival of Vanderbilt’s said this week, “Can you imagine that system at Vanderbilt? What a nightmare. Nick Saban would be glad to only have to play Vanderbilt every few years.”

Notre Dame’s Lea, architect of an Irish defense that has allowed 17 points per game and ranked second nationally in third-down stops, is considered a top candidate for the Broyles Award that is given annually to college football’s top assistant coach. The cerebral Lea, who has deep ties to the Mid-State Region in Tennessee and is beloved as a Vanderbilt alum, is considered in coaching circles as an absolute head coach on the rise. Said one prominent SEC assistant to FootballScoop, “Vanderbilt just needs to hire Clark Lea and get the damn thing done. He’s a perfect fit there.”

Chadwell’s the head coach on the list with the most current success. His Chanticleers are the Cinderella toast of college football with a perfect 10-0 ledger that now includes last weekend’s wild win against previously unbeaten BYU. Chadwell’s a keen offensive mind with a well-developed, strong-armed quarterback. His defensive coordinator, Chad Staggs, also has elicited interest at the Power-5 level for his work with Coastal’s defense. The unit held BYU to just 17 points – its lowest total of the season and just the second time this year the Cougars failed to score more than 40 points.

A source connected to the search told FootballScoop Vanderbilt is far more interested in making the right hire, than in making a quick decision.

Vandy actually has some interesting options for themselves. Clark Lea is a hot name and might actually stay there long-term as a Nashville native and Vandy grad. They should hire him for sure. And we like to shit on BOB but he'd be a steal for them. Chadwell is interesting too

Not sure I understand why people would be so scared to face a Vandy triple option. Seems like that'd be a disaster with Vandy athletes vs UGA/FL/Bama etc athletes
