If the Mavs ever wanted to hit the reset button, fire Dumont and Nico now.

How’s Dumont going to fire himself?

Things Nico could control:

Brunson extension

Luka trade

Things Nico couldn’t control:

Mavs 1.8% chance of winning the lottery

fire Nico

Nico had nothing to do with Brunson. That was all on Cuban.

They did.  They were fined multiple times for tanking that season.   Not much more you can do

You’re right. They could have traded up to get the number 3 pick by taking on salary but they wouldn’t do it and decided to trade draft picks instead. Got that mixed up.

Man….think about how pumped we should be for this but most of us are concerned this GM is going to screw up…again.

You cannot fully rule out the possibility he uses this to get KD. He doesn’t care about this franchise beyond 3 years from now.  Flagg does not turn this roster into a contender next year.

can we change the thread title to

2025-2026 Mavericks - Self Flagg-Elation

I am absolutely shocked the Spurs did not get the #1 pick.

Hopefully we'll have the chance to actually use that title.

I'm not saying he will be, but if Flagg is a defensive liability at all, it is going to be funny.

Have you seen him play? He's not going to be a defensive liability.

Is it fair to say that the Mavs need a guard more than a small forward? If so, Nico trades #1 to Spurs for both their picks. Spurs take Flagg. Nico trades the picks for a veteran guard and small forward, probably KD. Hahahaha

I understand stand he may have acquired a taste for beer in college..,

we should get him started on some Shiner Bock first.  we can dip in the Lone Star later.

I honestly don’t know, is Cooper Flagg considered a generational type or just another really good player? I didn’t know anything about him until late in the cbb season.

He's not Wemby but he's a step up from Zion and the best college prospect since Anthony Davis.

This seems to be the consensus I’m reading. I read somebody call him the most “complete prospect” in a generation, because his offensive game is much more refined at this point than Wemby’s and he’s a good defender, especially as a help side guy. Wemby has a higher ceiling, mainly because he has a higher ceiling than everyone.

Another thing to consider with Flagg is he just turned 18, he reclassified to go to Duke a year early. Which makes him holding his own last summer in workouts with the men’s national team even more impressive, he was a 17 year old kid.

Nico was holding 7/4 off suit.

flop brings 6 A K

turn 3

river 5

Nico makes the nut straight

of course silver was the dealer.

I fully expect him to find a way to fold after seeing the river.

Don’t forget Nico yelled “hit” after holding 7/4.

Ironically, he's just about the perfect player to play alongside Luka

He fits well with lots of people.  He can initiate the PnR.  He can be the secondary on the PnR.  Distributor.  Decent shooter in college.  Unlimited energy. And that's just on offense, which is the weaker side of his game.  He is so good on defense.

Doubtful. He led the ACC in defensive rating, defensive win shares, and defensive BPM. Hopefully that prevents Nico from overthinking this gift of a pick.

Some good points on why we need to fire Nico

The Dallas Mavericks STILL need to fire Nico Harrison - now more than ever

So much this. Flagg, who I’m glad to have, is 7-8 years from his prime.

He can probably contribute immediately and hopefully he’ll be the next Grant Hill, but there’s more than a little bit of a Great White Hope vibe around this kid. My point is that we can’t trust Nico to manage this situation if Cooper Flagg exceeds all expectations. How can we trust Nico if he doesn’t?

It was more of joke than anything.  I know he is a very good defender.  I am expecting him to be a very good defender in the NBA but it is another level of play so you never know.  if he is the 3 he shouldn't have an issue.

This is where I'm at as well. Nico has already stated he sees this as a 3-4 year window and he's out. It would be criminal to let him trade an absolute bailout for this franchise by using it as capital to bolster a 2-3 year window. It's the perfect opportunity to oust this bozo and let the more qualified candidates lineup.

No CR

I said all over X that it must be in the NBA bylaws for the turn of the century that Dallas MUST have a White Super Star...but hey, at least he's American this time.

Assuming Nico doesn’t fuck it up and Mavs draft Cooper, the big question is who runs point until Kyrie returns.

Different scenarios I have seen/heard being thrown out:

Just roll with Brandon Williams

Sign a vet free agent like Schroeder, Tyus Jones, Malcolm Brogden

Make a trade: Colby White (would love) Derrick White (hate the contract), Anfernee Simons (not really a PG but I like him).

Most likely assets to be used in a trade would be Gafford, PJ, Hardy, picks, and possibly Klay depending on the deal. Somehow Dwight Powell’s expiring won’t be used in a deal and he will remain a Mav

I like Gafford but he seems the most logical to move. PJ is streaky on offense but I love what he has done as a Mav and would hate to see him go but he now seems the odd man out. I like Klay as a player, not attached to him as a Mav.

I definitely stopped watching/caring after the Luka trade and I really have missed it. I hate the owners/Nico and pisses me off they lucked in to the # pick but I like having a little hope again for the team.

Starting 5: Ky (when healthy), Klay, Cooper, AD, Lively

We're 13 million over the first apron. Whatever we do it's going to involve shedding salary. I wonder if we bring back exum for 3 million again.  Hardy basically didn't play at the end of the season even when healthy so I can't imagine he'll be here in October. I've said it before - Gafford for Reaves straight up solves issues for both teams. I'd rather keep PJ than Klay.  Send him to LA also.

Klay would have absolutely been helpful if we had kept the roster in place. Look at Klay's numbers when Luka came back in December. He had one dud game against Memphis, but after that and up until Luka got hurt, he shot 51% from 3 and averaged 18 points per game. That was all while averaging only 25 minutes per game.

My dream scenario is to Trade AD(they won't) and keep PJ to be the 4(his natural spot).  Flagg/PJ/Lively is damned good defensively, rebounding, and even scoring to varying degrees.

I would absolutely take Colby White and even White(even with that contract) to keep them afloat until Kyrie is back.  Even a guy like Schroder fits too...I'm sure they'll find some ball handler between now and the season.

When Healthy Ky/Klay/Cooper/PJ/Lively and still a decent bench with Naji and  the like.

I don't think they'll sit klay...but if they get a Derek or Colby White player, it's probaby Ky/White starting and Klay/Naji/Omax/Powell off the bench.  I'm probalby missing guys but that's still a very solid team with a mix of young and vets and a future.  Who absolutely could contend next year if Flagg is close to what they think.

But yea, the'll keep AD, trade Gafford/PJ and probalby get a guard back to hold the fort and maybe some future assets and roll with Ky/Klay/Cooper/AD/Lively and a good bench(still good IF everyone is healthy. a legit threat.

Mavs need to boot Klay. He’s worthless. And they need to fire Nico for signing him.

Man WTF for his salary and asked to do WAY more than he was expected, he was perfectly fine.  I hope they don't feel they HAVE to start him, but they probably will.

OH yeah Klay, at his salary, was a good player for them, considering he was asked to play more, and do more, than he was supposed to.

GOD I wanted to see this team fully realized with Luka.  Even with the Lively/Gafford injuries, and even with Ky being hurt...they still make the playoffs and give the Thunder a run.
