The regular ones aren’t the tastiest but the dipped ones are pretty good, and if you know of a tastier thing with as good or better macros for 180 calories I’m all ears. 18g protein, eating one of those completely tides me over.

Back to pre college football season weight. Damn you ipa’s. Down to 178.5 today(yes I’m crediting 1/2 pounds!). 190 on New Year’s Day.

No alcohol , 8-10k steps a day. Cardio and weights 5x a week, almost no sugar, more protein than carbs, tons of veggies, no processed stuff. Sleep 7-8 hours. Goal is 168 so plugging away.

Hit 173 today. Down from 190 Jan 1. Still doing all of the following. No booze, cardio weights 5x a week., sleep 8 hours, almost no sugar, about a 500 per day calorie deficit. Maintaining a pace of about 1.5 pounds lost per week which is good. Slow and steady wins the race. No booze really makes a ton of difference. Onward to 166.

This can't be said enough.  For those who really want to shed pounds, or fend of some creeping weight gain as you age and your metabolism changes, cutting out alcohol is a game changer.

No man on his deathbed has lamented, “I wish I drank more.”

Was in Puerto Rico this week and hiked a mile up and down in the mud to a waterfall you can jump in.  They also have a rope swing.  (Pretty sure it’s the first time in my life I’ve roped swung into the water.)

Nailed the entire hike.  18# lighter than Jan 1, more flexible than I was in years.  Had family along and the one who’s 45 said, “Half my coworkers could never do this.”

If you let yourself get fat and weak as you get older, there are cool things you will simply not be able to do.  And I sincerely believe if you don’t stimulate your brain, it starts to die in little pieces at a time.  It puts you on the track to being an old, angry a hole of a man.  Watching Fox News all day and being hated by your family.

Really impressed w/ my stick-to-it-ness, and w/ the actual weight lost.  I've only cheated a couple times - was in Arlington for opening weekend in a friend's seats that include Lexus Club and free food/beer in the seats, and then my mom's 80th/sister's wedding in SATX 2 weeks ago, which was my goal event (tired of looking fat in pics).  Decided to keep my head down and see if I can't get to 200#.

Started at 235+ and today:

Good job. Keep grinding.

Is that scale from Service Merchandise?

Yeah I had a great aunt that lived on her own into her 80s. She got around, had a small garden, flower beds, drove to the local store. She had a wreck and broke her collarbone and that was the end of all that.

My grandmother is 91 and still does kettle bell workouts.  She has dementia which sucks.  But if it were not for that, she could still do all sorts of stuff.  She was playing golf with her club friends up until a few years ago until onset of dementia.  She skied well into her 70s. An older friend of mine is 80 and his morning workout is to play 18 while walking the course.  He looks 65.

I decided to get into shape a few years ago when I turned 45 after several years of being out of shape because I want my 50s to 80s to be as good as they can be.  I have seen to many people in their 50s that are in awful shape and unable to walk up a flight of stairs without getting short of breathe.

I am not nearly as worried about longevity.  As a believer, not worried about dying.  But I do not want to be an invalid or unable to do the things I love outdoors.  To me, health is about putting yourself in the best position possible to have quality of life.  Very hard to do if you are obese, eating garbage, and inactive.

I buy a lot of precut vegetables. It's 3x more expensive but it keeps my life simpler so it's worth the cost.

As far as protein and carbs, I'll grill batches of chicken, pot of quinoa/rice/beans to be used later. I do eat a lot of seafood so canned tuna and sardines are excellent for a quick hit of protein.

You do protein shakes?  I mix one up with coffee, ice, and a banana in the blender for breakfast every day.  Has around 250 calories.  Keeps me full until lunch.  I also drink a Core Power with 40 grams of protein around 4 every day -- keeps me from snacking before dinner.

I would have a very difficult time hitting my protein goals without the shakes.

I've tinkered with fasting from time to time.  One thing I've noticed is after about 36 hours my energy ramps up, but I sleep like shit.

Furthest I've gone is 70 hours with only water and coffee and it isn't that hard but it makes my workouts more difficult as I go.

Started adding a 50 pound weight vest to my morning and evening walks.  Each 2 miles. Really makes it feel like a workout.  In addition to HIIT I do pretty much daily.  Going to do some serious long section hikes of the CDT in Montana this summer as my place is 35 minutes from Glacier entrance.  That plus all the stairs I do at office should help.

Rarely. I prefer to hit my macro/micro goals from food.

I eat a post-workout breakfast and mid-morning meal before lunch.

A snack of 8 oz of chicken breast, 1 cup of kale drizzled in a teaspoon of olive oil and a tomato is a little over 300 calories and 50+ grams of protein.

I find meat to be more satiating than anything else. Snacking isn't a concern because eating often becomes a chore. Skip the protein drinks and eat your protein and you will not be hungry.

Cutting out alcohol, or cutting out shitty drinks that contain alcohol?

I mean, giving up beer is 100% the smartest thing to do if you're trying to lose weight.

But cutting out something like, "regular" Vodka (not flavored) isn't a game changer.  It may not even change the game at all.

On the flip side, any alcohol leads to reduced inner-strength.
So, your ability to say no to Taco Bell or BBW or Italian Cheesecake is now a lost battle.

It depends.  If you drink 2-3 pours of regular (nonflavored) Vodka every night with nothing but ice and maybe club soda, that's about 98 calories per standard shot, which are purely empty calories.

And it's going to affect your metabolism, causing your liver to create more cholesterol and fat, and making it more difficult access stored fat to burn as energy.

Maybe to your more general point, no, you don't need to abstain completely from alcohol to bolster weight loss in combination with exercise and healthier food consumption.  And, yes, some alcohols are better than others in terms of sugar and other carbs that further tax your liver and go straight to your love handles.  But as you get older, drinking "good" alcohol even in moderation makes shedding pounds much more challenging.

So I stand by my proposition that cutting alcohol (including straight unflavored vodka) is a game changer.   And personally, I don't do that on a regular basis (football season? forget it).  But when I abstain completely for some significant amount of time (e.g. Dry January) and don't change anything else about my diet and exercise, I can more easily and visually cut off some excess pounds.

I lost a bunch of weight just by quitting booze cold turkey several years ago.  Not drinking also means I am up at 5 with a clear head and feeling great, so I go walk the dog and then do my HIIT workout in the garage.  That would not happen when I was drinking.  So it is kind of a force multiplier for me.

If I would have known how much better I feel completely abstaining from alcohol, I never would have started.

Won't be #scaleshamed again, but I'm stuck at 207# after a pretty consistent dropping from 235 to 215.  I continue to believe my diet is solid, that this is just my body adjusting to a new norm, and the weight will start to come off with time, but after so much positive reinforcement, the last month or so has left me wanting a bit.

We are on the same path. I’m down from 239 to 208. I’m adjusting my diet again after my vacation. Kick start the next phase of weight loss.

Why's ole' rex negging you on this one? The team had a great year, but more than a handful of Tuesday losses, and many of their games were fucking nail-biters? Why wouldn't I have to drive through that?

I went from 261 to 242 in a little over 3 months, my booze intake dropped hard early on, and now haven't had any in a few weeks, eating way better except for today I had 2 mcdoubles for lunch because I was fucking starving and it was next to the office. I have been walking at least 10k steps a day and playing pickleball and basketball 4/5x a week. Feeling and looking better. Thanks for all the info in the thread as always

That's great progress.  Add in some pushups, dips, and air squats on a daily basis.  I've been lifting for a couple years now.  My bench press really went up when I started doing a lot of push ups throughout the day.  I am getting close to 245 on my max, which is the best I have ever done (and I weigh around 190).  I am 6'2" with freakishly long arms, so bench has always been a bitch for me.

Thanks, yea I do a bit of that. When pickup basketball is slow I hit another court and do full court runs with layups then some 3pt shooting in between. Each miss is 5x something, I rotate between pushups, up downs, squats, and mountain climbers. After a few rounds I’m not making shit so it turns into quite a bit.

Forgot the most important part of this but I got laid off in February and stopped living out of airports and Marriotts 22 days a month. Took a min for me to quit being a bitch about it happening and it was a huge lifestyle change to just be put and mentally was rough at first but definitely a positive as I landed at a solid place with no travel needed outside of the immediate SoCal area. I know I could have done it while traveling but damn it was hard and I was pretty weak when it came to client, team, and leadership lunches and dinners constantly.

I have a couple of friends in a group chat solely for accountability on this stuff.  We do a 30s yogi squat, 60s plank, 10 push ups, 10 air squats (+whatever else you want to add for yourself) 5x a day.  Text in after each round.  Just a nice way to keep everyone motivated to do literally the bare minimum - without it, I would never keep it up on my own.

Same.  We all text each other between 5 and 6 am to make sure we are all working out.  And give each other shit if someone is not up and moving.
