The end goal of Trumpism is Putin’s Russia. Insular, inward-looking, and apart from the global community. Economy in the hands of a small political in-crowd. Intellectuals, dissenters, and the press harassed or worse. A population that’s homogeneous, aging, angry, and paranoid. Even if courts or future elections overturn specific policies, the perception that America is unwelcoming and unfriendly will last for a generation or more.

I’m probably 10 to 15 years from retirement. I can ride it out and then check out. But we have elementary school-aged kids. A life in Putin’s Russia is not what I want for them and we’re now facing the same tough decision that a lot of Asians, Latin Americans, and Africans did in the 20th century: would my kids have a better life outside of the place that I call home? We also, fortunately, have some means to do something about it (not Surly 1%).

Would like to hear serious thoughts on how best to prepare them. Foreign language lessons? Somehow start building a case for residency/citizenship elsewhere now? I think a few of you have sent kids overseas for college - is the idea/possibility that they will stay? I’m honestly not trying to be alarmist, just proactive. If my take on the world turns out to be dead wrong, then great. But I’m also not the kind of person that wants to leave any stone unturned.

One of the ironies of the LLM type generative AI is it sucks at calculating. It’s just not built to crunch numbers, even though it runs on the most powerful calculators ever built.

LLMs are really good at predicting the appropriate next syntax element. Which is why it’s great at writing paragraphs that read like a human wrote them. It generates the right form of content. But it’s not necessarily great at generating accurate content because it’s designed to give you want you want rather than what’s objectively correct.

that's good to know I was not aware.

Don't mean to further derail the thread, but I know there are people that have jobs involving putting together agentic AI workflows, and yes part of them is having AI agents that check other AI agents.  It's happening right now.  Also, this isn't just going to affect the tech industry.  They are making strides in medical diagnoses for example.  A lot of big corporate pushes teledoc stuff already (I imagine its cheaper for them).  One doesn't have to squint too much to see where that's heading.

Related to the point of the thread I know what NOT to tell my kids to major in, but have no clue otherwise.  The future of the next 10 years is pretty damn murky.  I like the agile ideas posted in this thread but I'm not leading by example at the moment.  Son has an interest in biology/zoology currently.  I used to think scientist sounded like a good deal.  But look what we're doing to science and research (AI or not) these days....

medicine is another one - complex answer but a clear right and wrong one too.  we are actively looking at / attempting to use AI in legal but it's not anywhere close yet.  too much judgment, nuance, leverage, fact and even perception dependent answers. it will eventually help but I really can't see it dominating law like the doomsday sayers assume.  but learning early on will be tremendously difficult because that initial learning curve is pretty mundane, clear outcomes.  example, my first tasks were often proof reading a prospectus before it went to print.  after a year of that, I graduated to revising for a partner, then eventually doing them as the primary.  going to have to find a way to learn differently.  it's going to be a serious adjustment.

The topic was soft power dipshit.  Try to keep up.

And we all saw how incredibly "soft" they are. All of Western Europe contributed to the cause and US didn't have to send a single troop to establish the worldwide mockery. Textbook definition of soft power is getting other people to do your work.

Russia being inept and corrupt is not soft power.

This is the exact opposite of soft power

The same people who want to say Russia doesn’t take a shit without a plan, now want to say they are inept.

Biden exposed Putin’s Russia to the world and nobody is left wondering what power they bring.

It is entirely possible to have a plan for taking a shit and then fuck it up by getting drunk and shitting in a neighbor's front door planter.  Or so I've heard.

Is that what all the recent TACO talk is about?

Mexico should create a path to citizenship for Americans of Mexican heritage going back several generations. My family is 4th generation born on this side of the Rio but retains a lot of ethnic Mexican culture (with some distinctly South Texas/American differences). My brother in law’s parents were born in Mexico and he got dual citizenship a long time ago. I’m very jealous, they have a legit exit plan. I’m pretty much stuck in this shithole country and also fear for my children. If this continues they’ll probably make it illegal for Americans to study abroad or even leave for more than a few days at a time. My kids also have a z at the end of their last name like me and we know where that’s heading even now regardless of citizenship. There’s no hyperbole anymore, the most outrageous shit is clearly on the table. We’ve learned there is no bottom.

Sadly Mexico path right now is same as the BS we have here with the golden visa.  Invest enough and you’re good.  Toss in actually being there several months of the year, but that’s pretty easy if you ask me.  Badass urban place in Mexico City then a million options for a beach get away.  Very likely the angle for me.  Wife from EU so I’ll work that too but she prefers Mexico as well.
For now I’ll stick around and bother the incredulity’s of the world.  I think this is a blip.  Unless you think Trump will keep Congress in 18 months.  I don’t see how that happens.  Even when his popularity is high, he has trouble helping his maga clowns do well in congressional elections.

Yeah....nobody in a same-sex relationship has ever been pregnant.  WTF?  There's this thing called "science" - it allows for such things.  Happens all the time, in fact.

It is an undeniable truth that it is more dangerous to be pregnant in Texas than in a jurisdiction that allows the full spectrum of care for women.  You don't have to worry about that.  Yippee for you.

Also, I think women's health care is going to decline even further.  It's already horrendous for the underclass.

And I think new OB-GYN are going to stay away from Texas.

Russia and Ukraine has nothing to do with soft power.  It's also an horrendous misquote.  He said US reaction and sanctions would depend on what Russia actually did, ranging from a minor incursion to a mass invasion.

I once got escorted off my own sisters property, during a Halloween party, for extinguishing the mini jack-o’-lanterns lining the sidewalk, with my urine so this hits close to home.

Soft power is by definition diplomacy.  Biden signaled weakness by equivocating on what consequences would be for invasion and Putin took that signal and invaded.

It’s a literal case study in soft power failure

I’m staying so we can rule over the ashes.

I will raise my girls to be Furiosas, and to answer any Republican(Nazi) with violence, disdain, and murderous rage.  We will build our black castles out of their bones and the bones of their families.

then I’m getting one of my weird little midget dudes to hang out with me as I preside over my new empire.
