Dates back to at least the Civil War (LSU started as military school) and maybe as far back as the Mexican-American War where Louisiana regiments or battalions were known as/ nicknamed the Louisiana Tigers. A regiment in the Civil War fought fiercely ( like Tigers) in the Shenandoah Valley and the name supposedly could have been taken from there.

cool info. also cool info: my grandfather was a founding member of the Flying Tigers and retired as a Lt. Col. in the USAF. was also an all-swc lineman at smu. he is my hero.
