So we'd clamber out of the car halfway through the ride, and spend the next little bit jumping out from behind corners to scare the ever living shit out of people who were on the ride.

I just find their ratings to be askew with CBs more than anyone. I’ll have watch guys, see them get picked on, and then they’ve got a higher grade than the CB on the opposite side of the field who the opposing team was avoiding like the plague. If memory serves, the returning starting CB for Ohio State had a higher grade last year than his drafted counterpart and the dude returning was holding/PI machine who was almost always in danger of getting burnt.

Davison Igbinosun. Was exactly the same at Ole Miss. Was a penalty machine who was constantly picked on and somehow that got him a transfer to tOSU and a title ring.

Dude must be doing something right, but it's hard to see what it is.

Laremy Tunsil. Great pass pro grades by PFF. Leads the league in penalties.

Hard to tell. I think I see a 6 in there.

Speaking on Stroh, based off the pic it looks like playing left guard, gonna assume it’s a hand off. He either stepped with the wrong foot or had zero chance from the start. Because if the DT is in a 3 Tech at worst he could’ve washed him down the line. But if he’s playing right guard and that’s a 1 tech or nose shade. Stroh might be fucking lost

It was a huge waste of Earl Campbell's talent. Instead of lining him up 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage with a lead blocker allowing him to get a full head of steam, he was lined up a yard or two behind the quarterback and sent into the interior of the line.

It was a huge waste of talent. Earl "ran like a deer" when he got to Texas, but they bulked him up to play FB in the Wishbone.  He was still quick, but not as fast.

Sometimes, Earl got to the line so fast, he took a hard turn parallel to the LOS, because there wasn't a crease in front of him. Two big reasons he never should have been a FB.

If I remember correctly, Earl sometimes ran as a wishbone halfback when Roosevelt Leaks was in the game.

There’s a new Anthony Hill Mic’d up clip on Instagram. Two take aways. Hill blasted Wisner in pass protection, but Wisner stayed in front of him somehow. That was cool. Stroh had a terrible rep at Guard on a goaline situation, someone just tossed his ass.

I liked Hill shit talking Wisner some "Don't hold me!".

Sorry to divert from the Disney talk but this triggered me. I remember going to see UT play UH in the Astrodome in 1983. UT won 9-3 and I was never so pissed after a win in my life. Mossey Cade intercepted a pass and returned it to the UH 1 yard line, you guessed it, FG. Walking out of the stadium I remember seeing UT's total yards for the game was 90 something. It was embarrassing.

After the 1984-1989 stretch I decided I'd never again be mad after a win.

I was at that game, too. My Dad and I weren't very happy about that game, neither, but we'd both come to expect shitty experiences when playing Cougar High.

Yes, he’s playing LG.  Yes, it’s a handoff with Gibson going off Strohs right hip.  It is not a wide angle shot so you can’t see much.  The DT didn’t make the play on the RB and not sure he even negatively impacted him.  My initial thought is that the block was effective even if ugly with the DT trying to cut backside rather than fight thru.  But too many unknowns based on the limited view.

If the DT was a 2 tech then I guess that’s the best case scenario when getting beat. But then I have concerns about the DT trying to shoot the B gap when head up with the Guard lol if it’s a zone concept though and that’s a 3 tech Strohs job is to block out. He failed, his head and body are going the complete opposite direction of where it should be going. That’s why I thought it was a misstep. May not matter here but if he sees meaningful time. It’s something to keep an eye on.

No hostility here btw I was just a former O-Linemen and I picked what I saw in the close up lol wide view would certainly help matters but oh well

No hostility here either.  Just talking football.  I was too talented to ever play Oline.  Just joking - sorta.  But I do appreciate you guys.  I don’t know the footwork aspect of the line so any aspect of that is appreciated.

And I looked at it again and can’t determine jack.  Robertson is blocking right although not really engaged.  No one blocks Hill.  It looks as though the DT is inside Stroh but can’t exactly tell which way he wants to take him because Gibsons desired path isn’t totally clear.

You can only see 3-4 guys in the clip at a time.  Caldwell, Robertson, Stroh and Gibson then Brevard and Hill so it looks like they’re going against the 1/1b defense.  Probably crappy O across the board.

Not to disparage DKR, and these scores are old (1984), but NFL Wonderlic scores by position are allegedly:

Yeah unfortunately the last time I called an LSU QB a "poor man's Sam Ehlinger" in the preseason he went on to have one of the most flawless seasons of any college QB ever.

The most unbelievable part of Daniel’s’ 2023 season is that he was (mostly) uninjured while running amok. Cheap shot from fuckhead Dallas Turner aside.

The Iggy hype the OSU boards are fomenting reminds me of the CB at Bama who was picked on constantly and then taken in the first round of the 2024 draft. Did that guy have a good rookie year? I remember debating him in that year’s draft thread.

That image you guys have been quoting is hilarious. That looks like a 350 lb man getting easily ragdolled.

Thursday - Bobby

Spoiler

Thursday

With the football season about to start, that means it’s nearing unofficial visit time in the recruiting world.

Yesterday alone, there were comments about Texas commitment Derrek Cooper potentially visiting Miami and the Hurricanes not giving up, and another regarding A&M commitment KJ Edwards and his interest in attending a LSU and Texas game.

Here’s what I can tell you:

When it comes to the running back position, the Longhorns’ pursuit of Cooper is singular. Texas is all in on Cooper.

Texas feels good about its position with Cooper, too. He will visit this fall for at least one game. And remember, he has an official visit to Texas still available.

As for Edwards, him wanting to visit Texas is one thing. Texas pursuing him is another.

As I said, Texas running back recruiting is currently a singular pursuit of Cooper. And the Horns will take only one.

More than anything, Texas is focused on not taking its proverbial eye off the ball with Cooper.

**

Speaking of recruiting, it looks like the Sam Houston State game is lining up as the first big weekend the Horns are pushing for recruits to come to campus.

While there could be an uncommitted 2026 player or two, the visit list will be primarily composed of 2027s, 2028s and beyond.

**

The scrimmage this Saturday will be fundamentally different than last Saturday.

This week, it will be an actual, true scrimmage, at least through the first part.

That means no free substituting play by play, the defense must react to what the offense is doing pre-snap in real time, and there should be no quick whistles.

One of the goals of the second scrimmage is to make it feel more like a game and less like an exercise. Last week, while they scrimmaged, it was more of an exercise.

Now, there’s still immense value in that exercise. But this week is, as Steve Sarkisian has said, where he and his staff start to make some hard decisions, both in personnel and of future strategy based off of that personnel.

**

Given those upcoming decisions, here are the spots we’re watching closely:

- Back-up QB (Caldwell or Owens; engineering drives of 13 and 16 plays in the last scrimmage puts the onus on Owens to match)

- Tight end rotation (Washington is making a move; will it be a subtle one or will he displace Shannon in the process?)

- Nickel rotation (Taaffe and McDonald will see a lot of action there, but just how much will Littleton and Mack? They need to have good scrimmages to assert themselves.)

- Corner opposite Muhammad (Guilbeau is thought to be the leader in the clubhouse but just how much time Black gets early in the season, especially against Ohio State, could be determined by his play this weekend.)

**

Texas practices today and tomorrow before the scrimmage on Saturday. They were off yesterday.

I hope Washington displaces Shannon. We pay in 12 personnel so much.  Juan Davis was sub replacement level at receiving and blocking last year.  It hurt our offense.  I fear more of the same with Shannon if he is TE 2.

Washington passing Shannon has seemed preordained to me. Were it not for Washington missing the spring, I doubt it would have to be a thing. That said, I don’t think they’re bullshitting us about Shannon being a good blocker. If they play him in situations, they’re doing it because they want to, versus having to do so.

That's good to note.  Because Davis was an awful blocker.

Looks like he started all year for one of the best teams in the league, really struggled in the first half of the year, but improved in the second half
