Had to fire up All the President's Men last night. "You're both paranoid. She's afraid of John Mitchell, and you're afraid of Walter Cronkite."

i've only recommended this book about 200x on this board, but if you have a chance, pick up "adventures in the screen trade" by william goldman. i've prob bought 5 copies because i kept lending it to people.

goldman goes through all of his projects up to that point, which i believe was late 70's/early 80's, but the highlight (to me) was the chapter about all the president's men. he was dealing with redford the producer, along with woodward and bernstein - the writers and their book - along with bernstein's then girlfriend, nora ephron.

it's very accessible, even to those who don't give a shit about the film business or the writing business, and gives a lot of fun side-stories and anecdotes about redford, newman, and other characters he came across in the 60's and 70's. everything he's written is good, but this is especially great.

the thing about Redford is that we all have our favorites and our top tens, but if there's a Redford movie on TV we're probably watching that one, too

@henrygandorf's comment on Legal Eagles for example

this would hit harder if Mom were still alive to mourn him

my parents collected Navajo weavings... Mom found out that Redford had touched a rug in a gallery, and she bought it on the spot

Hopefully he's boning your mom up in heaven right now.

CSB time:

About 6-8 years ago, I pull up to a four way stop in a residential neighborhood in Santa Monica. No other cars, so right when I'm about to move through the intersection, this old-ass man starts taking his time to cross the intersection. Truly a snail's pace. My ass is impatient and I kinda start doing these frustrated eye rolls and head shakes.

Old man stops in the intersection and slowly turns and looks me in the eyes. Its Robert Redford. Stared at me for about 3 seconds and then inched his way through.

Felt like a total dick

My sister has told me more than once I need to read that; maybe I’ll finally listen now…

He made a few good movies, and a lot of really meh... movies. He got away with a lot for his looks.

But he gets a pass from me for everything because of Jeremiah Johnson. It is still vastly underrated after all these years and decades. It has been a ritual of mine to pull out a copy of Jeremiah Johnson on the freezingass coldest night of the year, park my ass on the recliner with a blanket and soak in the greatness of that film.

Iconoclasts: Robert Redford + Paul Newman. This is a short 37 min documentary that originally showed on Sundance Channel. You can find it on YouTube. Great seeing those 2 together. The doc does a good job of talking about there different careers along with Sundance Film Festival and Newman’s Own.

The two talking about Sundance and Newman’s Own.    Newman: We make about 185 million and only have 18 employees.  Redford: I have 185 employees and make 18 dollars.
