I think this is a really interesting discussion right now. And I think maybe the traditional view/rankings needs updating.

Texas and Ohio State are still unassailable. Those are the best two jobs. Throw Georgia in there, too.

USC used to be a good job. Wtf is happening over there? It feels like they have deep-seated culture issues. Add to that the B10 travel nightmare.

Nebraska just extended an average coach until 2032.

Tennessee is still Tennessee. Also-ran purgatory.

Oklahoma seems like they are a bad hire away from a Nebraska-like future. Although I think because of their proximity to Texas they will always be pretty good and maybe surprise if they get the next hire right.

Miami still can't figure shit out.

FSU is an unmitigated trash fire.

Clemson is a disaster under Dabo but I suspect that they could be right back to national contention if they cut ties with him (they should) and find a good guy.

Oregon? Fucking show us. Please. We're waiting. Same with you, Penn State.

I THOUGHT LSU was a premier job but holy shit whatever they are doing down there right now is like a poorly blocked Dr. Strangelove community theatre performance.

I hear more and more about how Bama doesn't really have any money.

Florida is like a shittier version of Texas.

That out of the way, here are some takes that I'm not saying out loud but y'all can read.

(I think Notre Dame is a top 5 job)

(I think Michigan is a top 5 job)

(I think aggy is a really good job)

(I think SMU is a top 15 job - at least)

(I think Tech is a pretty sick job right now. Minus the Lubbock part)

(ASU is a really good job)

(I think if Iowa opens that's a really good job)

And I think there are a lot of broke-bitches that weren't mentioned that are going to find themselves longingly starting into the mirror with a firearm in one hand.

All that said, what do y'all think the current top 5 or top 10 is?

Let's say my top 5 is Texas, tOSU, Jawja, Michigan, Domer. Not sure I agree with it but I'll float that out there.

Good grief, homer.

Why not?

The entire point of this post is that the rankings are very in flux right now. Rank SMU wherever you want - I don't give a shit. Just curious what people's rankings are.

You have to consider more history than the last few years.

Well, let me amend that:  if we aren't considering NIL and the transfer portal, you have to consider more history than the last few years.

Based on the former, no WAY I would put Georgia above tOSU, Notre Dame, USC, Alabama, Oklahoma, FSU or Michigan.  Recent results?  Sure, most of them.  Are they NIL and portal related?  I don't know.

I am firmly of the belief that the transfer portal is creating chaos that we can't yet decipher.

These tiers don’t really exist anymore for coaches at least.  Coaches have always decided on: how much am I paid and where can I win. Everything else is noise. Historically there’s been close but not perfect overlap.

In the portal and NIL era, stuff like winning tradition and recruiting hotbeds take a big backseat to booster funding and competent administration of that funding. Some helmet schools will do it right, some won’t, some upstarts will do great.

All the sports media and fans will argue over PSU vs. LSU vs. Florida. But Cignetti could have written his ticket at PSU and likely other places and stayed at IU. This shit is out the window: IU won the derby for hottest coach and thus its as “good” of a job as PSU is right now because of the pay and infrastructure to win.

Great post, first of all.

People are bashing me for the SMU stuff but this is where I am with Lashlee. It seems like he could have shopped around this window. Instead he reups. I think guys like Cignetti and Lashlee look around and they're like, well, the checks are cashing, I have a solid roster, the expectations are meh. Why the fuck would I leave?

Very interesting time in cfb. I mean fucking Vandy was just ranked 9th coming in to DKR. Maybe that's a really good job now? Is Duke a good job?

I agree that Lashlee could have shopped around and likely gotten a helmet school job or at least a place like VT or OSU that have long been seen as better than SMU. And that means that right now, SMU is a good job.

But I think you can’t rank institutions anymore, it’s more like the NFL. The best job is where you find the right infrastructure, surrounding personal, and money. Some schools, like some franchises, will manage to be consistently well-run. Some won’t. But like the pros, all of it can change in a hurry and it will be more personnel/administration dependent than in the past. The coach will have less to do with the direction of a program.

No job outside of the Power 2 is a "top job" given the current landscape of football.  True, there is tradition, but if you rank them by their ability to get a top coach -  the "coach of their choice", no one outside of the SEC and B1G measures up.  I wouldn't even put ND in there.

Curious what would make Iowa a better job than Nebraska.  To me they seem like the same thing except NU has history  with partial qualifiers, while Iowa has a lifer .750 coach who is good at defense and building offensive linemen but little else.

I don't think that's true. There are power players outside the P2. Tech, SMU, ASU, Miami to rattle a few off.

Notre Dame made the damn championship game last year...

You are correct, but I am speaking of desirability of the job for a top coaching commodity.  I think anything outside of the P2 is a step down on coaching job desirability.

Yeah I just don't think that's accurate. You think the worst job in the B10 is better than the best job in the ACC or B12? There's no way.

@ztejas I was under the impression you moved to LA? If so, you should know the reason USC is a shitshow. When we lived out there the last thing we were doing was going to watch USC. Too much shit to do.

Nah maybe you're thinking of @Zepol87.

There's always been shit to do in LA, though. And through all of it SC was a serious blue-blood.

I think now Notre Dame is a fantastic situation. Freeman is paid very highly, ND’s media rights ensure enough revenue to keep pace on facilities and infrastructure. I am not an NIL insider but ND recruits around the top 5 and does decently well in the portal both directions. They book marquee opponents each year and put players in the NFL, and their administration seems committed to winning and appropriately involved; probably more patient than other jobs with similar ingredients.

I think right now the ingredients are there to make ND a really attractive job, and I think they will keep Freeman.

Not really bro. SC piled up a ton of NCs by jumping on the black players train early. After the 70's they've won the two under PC and that's it. Since LA has been LA they've largely been wandering.

Really good take. This is the first time I seriously thought about that.

I think Riley is kind of a fraud, though.

Do you think SC is salvageable or are you close to writing them off at this point?

LSU won a NC with a guy that fucking eats grass and with another guy that just does not give a fuck and eats ass

the talent pool in Louisiana is un fucking real especially for a small state......people there do not give a shit about any other teams even if they do.....they still give a shit about LSU as much or more

Louisiana is used to fucked up bullshit from top to bottom no matter what is it.....if you are doing anything right there you are going to get fucked or run off or both because they will think you are a complete fuck head and a chump

Texas should be a better job, but expectations that come with the expectation of doing shit that is not embarrassing while still dealing with meddling ass hats that get in big swinging dick pissing contest makes shit hard

where things stand between Georgia and Texas will depend on how things go when UGA has to fire someone for not performing or do they just let it go for a long long time like Mark Richt only in this case it could be a lot harder it it gets like that because the current guy has won it all twice not just "come -><- this close"

aggy should be a top job, but they are just fucking stupid and hire shitty ADs  and College Station is too boring compared to the competition

penn state fucking sucks they made their way on being in a shitty over rated Big 10 and never dis shit in recent history.....I mean for fucks sake Indiana is #2 and their big wins are over another massive overrated Big 10 corn state team, and Oregon that has big wins over.....well fucking no one because penn state gobbles cocks and the rest of their schedule gobbles more cocks than Bob Stoops

Man, living out there you quickly realize the similarities between SC and UT. SC gets the pick of the state. They just don't take their program seriously enough. All they need to do is bring in a proper coach and they would be fucking shit up. California has a lot...a lot of talent. I mean they let the GOAT get out their backyard and go to Michigan. Oh, and you are correct about Riley.

Think I agree with all of that although I'm a bit more tepid on the LSU situation. I don't think that they are adjusting well to this current climate and I expect them to make a bad hire this cycle.

SC will never be what they once were. SoCal kids aren’t interested in playing in West Lafayette, In and Lansing, MI. Not to mention, the state of California doesn’t produce the same caliber of athletes they used to. It’s more about equality, and chicks with dicks. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Dysfunctional redneck schools that care too much about football are less advantaged now. Their upside was always:

1. They paid too much money for football coaches and their accoutrements.

2. They’d look the other way or actively help boosters cheat.

Everyone pays stupid money for coaches now. And there’s no reason to cheat. It’s all in the open and on the level.

A place like Notre Dame is a serious, well-managed institution. They are are very good at legally making and spending money. Assuming the money is the same and the legal salary pool is the same, where do you have the best support to run a complex sports enterprise? Notre Dame, or LSU where Governor Bobby Boucher is dicking around in the football corch search and your top men are all just car dealers?

Really? Look at NFL rosters. California has plenty of athletes. And all USC needs is 25 players a year. And like Texas, they don't all have to come from California. Our best player in recent history came from Arizona. And Ohio State is fine recruiting guys from warm weather climates. And the inner cities don't give a shit about "chicks with dicks": that's generally not why they vote as they do. And central and northern and eastern California vote differently than San Fransisco and LA. And keep political takes off the football board.

This is my exact fucking thought man. Although you're articulating it much better than I'm capable of right now. I don't buy LSU instantly being "back". I actually think aggy starts owning them.

It's why I think Michigan is also a top 5 job. It's just a bunch of smart, rational people with unlimited capital at their disposal that don't have huge expectations. Put a headset on a potato he's walking to 8 wins every season somewhere like that.

The reasons that USC sucks at football now are internal. There is plenty of talent nearby and decent money there (if it can be tapped). And there are plenty of players that would be fine playing football in Southern California. Players have no problem playing anywhere in the US if the money is right.

Really, what I think more than anything (besides a good coach) is that USC needs a good business person in the athletic department who can draw NIL from surrounding LA businesses.

one big donor can make any program relevant, instantly

Conversely ,that one donor can die and the program goes to shit. See T. Boone Pickens.
