When they are meeting to discuss the format for the CFP going forward, it seems prudent to install some kind of ranking threshold to get an automatic bid as conference champion. Similar to what used to exist for G5 teams to qualify for a BCS/NY6 bowl game.

Based on what? Sark handles business in rivalry games, but what makes you think oddsmakers would favor us over Indiana or Oregon given his track record again non-conference elite opponents?

I think talent differential.  I guess I should be more specific that I think the odds to win the game, not necessarily the betting odds.  Like before A&M the line was them -2.5 but they said we had a 51% chance to win the game.  There’s been other games like that this year.

They also said they won’t penalize teams for scheduling really tough OOC games but here we are.

we are being punished for having 3 losses. you cant say we are not being punished for the Ohio St loss. We most certainly are because if we weren't, we'd have the best resume of any 2 loss team.

Just a friendly reminder that Notre Dame, Miami, Tech, BYU, and Utah would all be VERY lucky to be 8-4 with Texas' schedule this season. I was looking over their schedules and they're pretty much just trash from top to bottom

Nice to see that the committee is taking the newfound attention to strength of schedule they announced before the season started seriously.

Been saying this over and over. If you want to lose to a terrible team like that, then find a way to split Georgia and Ohio State and we are easily in for the 3rd year in a row. Being 0-5 against Georgia and Ohio State in the past 13 months is a problem.

We can game the system and schedule junk OOC but at some point, we have to find a way to beat good teams if we ever want to win another national championship.

Maybe that’s what people think but we could have played almost anyone besides Ohio State and likely won.  Then we’d be 10-2 and in the playoffs, so in fact we are being deincintivized to schedule hard games going forward.

It’s so fucking stupid that anyone can say hurt durr Florida and try to hand wave away the reason we aren’t in the playoffs is bc we scheduled Ohio State instead of rice.

So, not beating one of the top 2 teams in the country means you shouldn’t be in a 12 team playofff. Cool cool cool. I think there’s maybe 4 teams in the country that might split that duo. Especially considering both were on the road.

We had a 2 game schedule and went 0-2.  And then lost one of the gimmes on top of that.  Them's the breaks.

This. Duke wining puts two G5 schools in the playoffs and no way Big/SEC lives with it.

I agree as a Texas fan.  However the issue I think that affects all of CFB is what motivates better games and which teams can actually make a run.

SEC runner up is out for Tech? Idk about that. There will be a MASSIVE shitstorm because that will be viewed as Bama being penalized for playing the SEC title game. And let's say that Bama beats UGA. Then who goes out? ND? OU?

Or we just fucking beat all of the shitty teams and not worry about it. We should not have lost to Florida. Consistent teams don't lose those kinds of games.

And it's fucking crazy how far and fast we've come in less than a decade where even a single loss could keep us out of playing for something significant, and now we are debating whether we should be in with 3 wins or not. We should be in if some of those 2-loss teams ahead of us lost today but they didn't.

In no season from 1900-2023 would a team who lost 3 games feel angry about not getting to play for a championship game.

We were all rooting for the scenarios, but it didn't happen. We all realize this team can beat half the playoff teams, but the cards didn't go our way.

It's dumb and excessive that 12 teams get to play for a championship anyway. A point illuminated by the fact that we might have both North Texas and JMU simultaneously in the playoff if Duke wins next weekend.

Gotta let it go at some point.

Dumb question amnesty, what exactly is expected when the committee says you "won't be punished" for scheduling a tough OOC game that results in a loss?  It seems like people are asking to completely disregard the loss and treat it as if Texas only has two losses, and then compare them against other 2-loss teams, in some cases where they have H2H result.  Asking to go that route seems like an unrealistic expectation.

I think both can be true. We shouldn’t schedule premier OOC games moving forward because SEC is 9 game schedules. Those premier games will come in playoffs and even a chance to host them. While also saying the loss to Florida was inexcusable and the real season we are in this situation

Yep shit happens, and I’ll keep saying it, if you go 9-3 with this schedule and you kick the dogshit out of most of those 9 wins be OT with the worst you don’t have as much ground to make up due to perception.

So if we were 11-1 like the Aggies but our only loss was Florida, some of you think we shouldn’t be in?  My position isn’t so much that we should be in on merit but that what motivates better games.  I agree that the Florida loss is bad.

Exactly. The main effect of leaving us out, despite clearly looking like a top 10 for the second half of the season, is that no one is going to schedule those tough OOC matchups early on which is going to hurt the sport as a whole

That too.  Going to OT with two bad teams eats away at your brownie points for playing OSU.

My take after today's results:

We obviously aren't getting in. Should we? Yes. Is it egregious? No.

The committee has told us all season what matters. Wins/losses trumps all. Can't really blame them; it's human nature. Now win the bowl game and schedule accordingly going forward.

Which is why the committee needs to be done away with as soon as possible.

It is. Our fans are still just fans, and that comes with irrational thought. We aren't being punished for Ohio State, it's Florida. How would that look in reality?; we would likely have been the highest ranked 2-loss team if it was just Ohio State and Georgia. That's what not being punished for playing a tough OOC would look like. It doesn't mean this other thing where you get to pretend you don't have 3 losses. I can't get too worked up over being left out if that's what happens. Sark has to do the politicking because it comes with the job, but it's not some great crime or travesty if we don't make it. Learn from it.

I don’t see why so many of our fans are just trying to wave away the OSU loss like it’s nothing.  You only get the benefit of the doubt of scheduling that game when you’re comparing against teams with the same number of losses as you. You don’t get to just wipe away the loss like it never happened.

We are out of the playoffs because we lost to Florida. Simple as that.  You want to be mad at something? Be pissed our coaching staff and players get their asses kicked by a team who fired their coach two weeks after we played them.

OU looked like regurgitated dog shit today they will still get in. Body of work beats out half the at large teams.

its not best teams all things considered, its best teams based on win loss records.

Sure. There will be one team pre CFP  that finished unblemished. Everyone else “didn’t handle their business”. We are the only team to play 5 top 15 teams. How many teams ahead of us in the playoffs would have 3 or more losses against our schedule?. Tech lost to ASU for example. They basically beat nobody. Gun to your head what’s the line if we were playing them at the cotton bowl?  Texas by 2.5 or 3.5. You think they are going better than 9-3 against our schedule?  Or we’d go worse than 12-1 against theirs?

Domers have 0 impressive wins. I think they are a top 10 school but you just can’t say they had a more accomplished season with us.
Georgia and Ohio state are the class of college football I think. Indiana has a chance to prove they are but I think when they run into superior athletes Ohio state chokes them out. Beyond that I think Texas has the 3rd highest ceiling in college football all and something like the 20th highest floor. Theres a lot of dichotomy there.
top 10 teams from watching an assload of football are probably OSU, Georgia, Indiana, Texas, Domers, ole Miss, tech, Oregon, Miami and maybe Bama. That’s my 10 in no particular order. No OU and no aggy.

Posted

The people complaining about the "not being punished for losing to Ohio State OOC" need to realize that we weren't punished. All season.

After we lost, we were the highest ranked 1 loss team (ahead of Clemson). After we beat OU, we were the highest ranked 2 loss team. After we lost to Georgia, we were the highest ranked 3 loss team.

That's what that means. "Hey we'll move you to the front of the line if you schedule the big boys." It doesn't mean "hey we'll rank you ahead of Ohio State and act like the game never happened."

Kinda disappointed that we're as whiny as South Carolina and Bama were last year.

Thats an insane standard that only a Texas fan would be myopic enough to hold their team to.
Vandy, OU and aggy combined to lose 5 games- 3 of which were against Texas and you just said we had a 2 game schedule. That is insane.
