Guess not. Chalkiest week of the year at the worst possible time.

We are 100% being punished for ohio state. Is bama being punished for getting blown out for FSU? The same FSU that just got blown apart by Florida?

This narrative of its the Florida loss is getting exhausting.

And the narrative too of "well Texas barely beat Miss St and Kentucky". Bama just barely beat a terrible Auburn team. Oklahoma just barely beat a terrible LSU team.

We have 3 losses. That's what we are getting punished for. If we played Minnesota or some other junk team, we would not be getting punished for the Florida loss. No way, not at all. Get this Florida punishment narrative out of here.

It's 100% because we played a top 5 non conference game and that cut into our margin of error. There's no other reason.

Bama took care of enough of their business to where they aren’t begging to get in. They earned it. We didn’t do enough. Cry more.

That's exactly why you don't schedule Ohio State anymore.  Why risk the 3rd loss when you can guarantee a win instead?  The committee doesn't punish teams for scheduling games against Our Lady of the Lake Girl's Academy so why play OSU?  We'll just see them in the playoffs instead.  We shouldn't put up road blocks for ourselves. The committee lied. We know that now.  So schedule by their actions instead of their words.

Or lobby to get rid of the committee.

What, you count the OSU loss as a win, you fucking dunce?  If the roles were reversed and we were a two loss team protecting a spot against a three loss team (including one to OSU) nobody here would be saying they should be in over us.

I don't want to lose the Ohio State and Michigan return games combined with us looking like bitches if we do it. I do think we should drop Notre Dame and I think other conferences should do the same. The fact that they get an auto-path with 2 losses and Miami might not make it in even though they have a head to head win shows that everyone needs to stop doing Notre Dame the favor of improving their schedule.

Who cares if we look like birches? I don't care

We play those schools because we want to associate ourselves with the best because we believe we are one of the best.

We don't schedule those schools because we believe loss to them technically won't be held against us and it's just a gentleman's exhibition where everyone gets a medal.

I agree. And wish could still be true. and when it goes to 16 teams maybe it will.

But in the 12 team playoff era it’s simply counter productive and irresponsible for us to play those game when there is no incentive.

Any argument that says "don't schedule Ohio State" would also logically lead to "don't leave the Big 12 for the SEC."

We would perpetually be a 10+ win team in the Big 12 with this coaching staff and NIL funding. But we left didn't we?

It's not just about the path of least resistance to the playoffs. Some people like to actually have good games to go to. Or to have a standard to hold yourself to.

In no season from 1900-2023 would a team who lost 3 games feel angry about not getting to play for a championship game.

We were all rooting for the scenarios, but it didn't happen. We all realize this team can beat half the playoff teams, but the cards didn't go our way.

It's dumb and excessive that 12 teams get to play for a championship anyway. A point illuminated by the fact that we might have both North Texas and JMU simultaneously in the playoff if Duke wins next weekend.

Gotta let it go at some point.

You're still viewing college football through an antiquated lense. Sark was right. The days of undefeated champions are over. Talent is the most spread out its ever been.

Thinking of all the big OOC games this year.

none of the teams that won did it really help.

Miami / ND

ATM /ND

Bucks / UT

OU /Mich

Noles /Bama

I know there were a lot more but that’s just off the tops. But every team that lost in those scenarios it basically eliminated or could have them with the exception of ND

Bama season was on the line tonight because of that Noles loss.

Mich season over because the Ou game

UT season over

They provide no benefit other than to the TV networks

No ifs about making the fucking playoffs. And intentionally making your path harder, when you already have a daunting 9 game SEC conference schedule is not beneficial at all.

yes they shouldn’t Los to Florida. No one debates that.  But the also shouldn’t play OSU if they get no benefit from it win or lose.

If Texas was a 2-loss team, and the losses were to Ohio State and Georgia, we would be ahead of every 2 loss team, and likely some 1-loss teams like BYU. Let's use Alabama as an example since they keep coming up. It wouldn't even be a debate. Would be the highest seed of those and whatever potential benefit comes with that. That's what scheduling a hard OCC does for you. If the losses were Florida and Georgia, and we had beat Rice instead of playing Ohio State, then you'd be seeing a debate as to where we'd fall within the pack of 2-loss teams, and yes we'd still be in the playoffs, but there'd be more animation about where we go and who we draw. To me, that's the difference.

Guys, you have to play a P4 team as an SEC school in the OOC. So stop saying we play Rice or some other G5. Make it Purdue, Baylor, Boston College, Rutgers, or some other P4 nobody.

Was not the case this year. It's a future scheduling rule. We could have played Rice instead of OSU  this year.

On future P4 game, I unfortunately agree.

We should play mid-tier and lower. Teams that might be able to show us things to work on, but not legitimate threats to beat us, even if we shit the bed.

No reason to risk a loss when the committee clearly doesn't care.

We should also play Rice every year with home games in Reliant for regular home games in Houston.

Third game should be a UT system school rotation.

Virtually guaranteed 3-0 non conference lets you drop up to 2 SEC games and still go to the playoffs virtually every time.

Beat Ohio state, Florida or Georgia or swap Ohio state for Cincinnati and still lose to Florida and Georgia and we’re in, ergo it’s the number of losses not the Florida loss specifically.

those saying it’s a penalty for Ohio state are simply saying with an sec schedule you can only afford two losses so don’t schedule an OCC that could be a loss even if the networks demand it.

The Southeastern Conference has established a scheduling format for the 2025 football season, it was announced Wednesday.

Similar to the 2024 SEC football schedule, during the 2025 season teams will play eight conference games plus one required opponent from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 or major independent.

Yeah, CDC isn't putting anymore home games in Houston. It's not that far of a drive for Houston people.

Thank you.  I was about to post about what cowards everyone is to take the lesson to not schedule difficult out of conference games.  You schedule them in hopes of getting credit for winning them.  You don't schedule them expecting to have no repercussions for losing them.

We only got into the playoff in 2023 because we scheduled and beat Bama.  Obviously they've continued to dilute the field but that same scenario could happen again.  If we had actually beat OSU this year and everything else played out the same, that's a huge feather in our cap as a 2-loss team.  We possibly get as high as the 5 or 6 seed with a very favorable home 1st round playoff game.  If we have a win over Purdue instead we slide down a couple of seeds and have a more difficult path.

Yes, scheduling a tough OOC game is a risk but to act as if there is only downside and no upside is being obtuse.
